    1. 1. Modest Mussorgsky 1839-1881
    2. 2. <ul><li>Modest Mussorgsky was born in 1839 in the village of Karevo. </li></ul><ul><li>“ Mussor” is the Russian word for “garbage” </li></ul><ul><li>Even though his family was descended from nobility, one of his ancestor’s had a “potty mouth” so people started referring to him by the sort of language he used. </li></ul><ul><li>His first name is not common either. “Modest” means the same thing in English. </li></ul>
    3. 3. <ul><li>He got his first piano lessons from his mother. </li></ul><ul><li>Back then, the oldest son inherited the family house and land, the second son went into the army. </li></ul><ul><li>Modest was the 2 nd son and became an Army officer. </li></ul><ul><li>When he was 18, he met Russian composer Mily Balakirev and started studying with him. The next year, he left the Army and started composing. </li></ul>
    4. 4. Balakeirev was only a couple of years older than Mussorgsky. For years, he and 4 other Russian composers got together to study and compose a Russian style of classical music. Balakeirev didn’t know that much about music but that didn’t stop him from criticizing music. He complained so much about one of Mussorgsky’s songs that Mussorgsky stopped working for him. The song he complained about is “Night on Bald Mountain.”
    5. 5. <ul><li>The story behind “Night on Bald Mountain” may be from one of the Russian Folktales he learned from his nanny. </li></ul><ul><li>When Mussorgsky was 24 there were political changes in Russia and his family lost most of their land and money. </li></ul><ul><li>Since he wasn’t making any money composing, he had to get a job. </li></ul><ul><li>He went to work for the government but kept composing. </li></ul><ul><li>He wrote a vocal song about a flea. </li></ul>
    6. 6. <ul><li>He also wrote several operas. </li></ul><ul><li>His masterpiece is about a Russian Czar who lived in the 1500s - Boris Gudenov. </li></ul>
    7. 7. = ? Boris Gudenov is not the same as Boris Badenov from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons! One of his best compositions, “Pictures at an Exhibition” was written in memory of an artist friend of his who died unexpectedly.
