The Tangier-Med Port is the Tangier-Mediterranean project that is a strategic priority for the economic and social development of the North Morocco region. It is part of the economic policy orienting Morocco towards exports, based on eight clearly identified export sectors, with particular emphasis on the free trade agreement with the European Union to be implemented between 2000 and 2012 .

  • Introduction
    The Tangier-Mediterranean project is a strategic priority for the economic and social development ofthe North Morocco region. It is part of the economic policy orienting Morocco towards exports, based on identified export sectors, with particular emphasis on the free trade agreement with the European Union .This project will have important economic effects in terms of jobs, moreover, it will face a lot of challenges .
  • B .Major Shipping lines
    Its particular position on the Straits of Gibraltar, at the crossing of two major maritime routes, and 15km from the European Union will enable to serve a market of hundreds of millions of consumers through free zones which will be run by well-known private operators.
    Regular services are owned by various ship owners out of tangier med to over 50 ports in Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
  • C .Customs and Tariffs
    The installation in the industrial free zones and logistics of the complex Tangier Med confers to the operators exceptional advantages which reinforce their competitiveness with export as:
    • An advantageous customs regulation
    • Unlimited exemption of the customs duties
    • Simplified customs procedures A gravitational tax mode
    • Exemption of the tax of license during 15 years
    • Exemption of the urban tax during 15 years
    • Unlimited exemption of the VAT & Corporation tax: 0% over the first 5 years; 8.75% over the 20 following years A mode of exchanges facilitated
  • D . Expenses:
    • The 90-Million-Euro for terminals, to be built in two phases, will ensure a steady supply of bunker products to vessels calling at the Tangier Med port and will provide an important route for diesel and petrol for the Moroccan market.( Phase 1, costing approximately 70 Million Euros, will consist of 370,000 cubic meters of storage and is expected to be completed by mid-2009).
  • E . Intermodal Capabilities
    Much more than a seaport, Tanger med platform includes available secured land reserves of 12,500 acres dedicated to processing zones connected to intermodal networks (rail, motorways and express lanes)
    Exceptional capacities:
    8 million containers
    7 million passengers
    10 million tons of hydrocarbons
    2 million vehicules
    700 000 Trucks: the current expansion plans undertaken by the port of Tangier med will be over 8 million containers,7 million passengers 700 000 …
    Tangier Med, a port (bearing) of last generation Of a capacity of 3 million containers, which (who) will be carried (worn) in 8 millions on the horizon 2016.
     
  • Terminals with containers:
    Both terminals with containers of the port(bearing) Tangier Med, endowed with a shelf space of 1600 meter quay(platform) with drafts of 16 and 18 m, covering a total surface of 80 hectares, counted about 3 million containers.
    The terminals will receive up to 4 great ships are equipped with 50 porticoes (gantries) with wheel (RTG) and 16 porticoes (gantries) alongside the quay. Of a height of more than 80 meters, porticoes (gantries) alongside the quay, of a capacity of lifting of more than 50 tons, with productivity from 25 to 30 movements per hour.
  • Temporary port (bearing) and carter:
    Equipped with nine posts(post offices) alongside the quay, the temporary port(bearing) and the carter, who will enter service in 2010, is conceived to deal up to 700 000 trucks and 7 million passengers. With the railroad station situated in the surrounding wall(speaker) of the harbor complex and the park reserved for trucks SHOOTING(FIRING) of a 25 hectare surface, the port(bearing)
    Terminal with Vehicles: Of a capacity allowing the treatment of a million vehicles a year, a 20 hectare surface and endowed with two posts (post offices) alongside the quay being able to welcome two ships because quarryman 240 meters in length is intended for the activities of import, export and transshipment of new vehicles
    Terminal Hydrocarbons:
    The terminal, dedicated to the handling and to the storage of the sophisticated (refined) products . With a 512 000 cubic meters storage capacity, this terminal can reach (affect) an annual traffic of 5 million tons.
    Temporary port (bearing) and carter:
    Equipped with 9 posts(post offices) alongside the quay, the temporary port(bearing) and the carter, who will enter service in 2010, is conceived to deal up to 700 000 trucks and 7 million passengers.
    Terminal with Vehicles: Of a capacity allowing the treatment of a million vehicles a year, a 20 hectare surface and endowed with two posts (post offices) alongside the quay being able to welcome two ships .
    Terminal Hydrocarbons:
    The terminal, dedicated to the handling and to the storage of the sophisticated (refined) products . With a 512 000 cubic meters storage capacity, this terminal can reach (affect) an annual traffic of 5 million tons.
  • Terminal Bulks and Miscellaneous:The Bulk carrier and diverse terminal will be of use to the treatment of the traffics of and export of diverse goods mainly bound(connected) to industrial companies installed(settled) behind the port(bearing) .
    Activity area:
    • The concept of integrity between harbor platform and industrial platform lead to The economic pole of the area of the strait based on its competitiveness on one hand ,& on the deployment of an industrial platform .
    • The industrial free zone of the complex Tangier Med Modern industrial park, managed according to the principle of one stop shopping, it is the industrial free zone of the harbor complex Tangier Med to which it is attached since 2006 with the entry in its capital of the TMSA which ensures management.
  • Center tertiary intermodal
    CTI, the center of life of the port Located in the immediate proximity of the port containers, the port carrier and the logistic free zone, the long white building of the Intermodal Tertiary Center (450 m), will represent the vital organs of the Harbor Complex Tangier Med. . The natural forces that are the wind and the sea are channeled by its massive envelope while being anchored in an adapted topography the port Tangier the Mediterranean. Adding up the CTI gathers the following components: offices of the administrative organizations such as :
    • Customs
    • National security
    • Gendarmerie
    • Marine commercial, ministries,
    • ONCF: offices of the entities of management and exploitation of the port (TMSA/TMPA, terminals, towing, piloting, conveyors, forwarding agents, agents trustees, ship-owners, experts maritime, insurances, managers of network);
    • The center of life, where are located the reception, of spaces of restoration, a medical centre and services such as trade, banking agencies, station, translation… ; a railway station located under the building raised on pile.
    Center tertiary intermodal
    CTI, the center of life of the port Located in the immediate proximity of the port containers, the port carrier and the logistic free zone, the long white building of the Intermodal Tertiary Center (450 m), will represent the vital organs of the Harbor Complex Tangier Med. Adding up the CTI gathers the following components:
    • offices of the administrative organizations
    • Customs
    • National security
    • Coast Guards
    • Marine commercial, ministries
    • ONCF: offices of the entities of management and exploitation of the port (TMSA/TMPA, terminals, towing, piloting, conveyors, forwarding agents, agents trustees, ship-owners, experts maritime, insurances, managers of network)
  • F .Navigational challenges:
    Including competition process Regarding Gibraltar Port which forms a real warning to Tanger Med .Plus the weather conditions during the winter time which obligate some ships to head toward Gibraltar port because of the strong draft and Swell . .
  • G . Incidents adversely affecting the port activities recently:
    • The activities of the port are used to be in process in 2012, actually one terminal of containers of the port is used by The Maersk company, the challenge faced referring to The port officer is that the weather during the winter time which make delays to enter the port and some ships prefer to head toward Gibraltar port instead of Tangier Med.
    • This port is facing another challenge regarding the logistics hub and port strategy because of the port of Algeciras .
  • H. Positive activities enhancing the port for new expansions:
    In the summer of next year, an oil terminal is scheduled to open under the management of the ENOC group’s Horizon Terminals. With a storage capacity of 512,000 cu /m, it will serve for bunkering operations, transshipment of refined products and the distribution of refined products to the Moroccan market.
  • Conclusion
    Tanger-Med is not just a project in the sea World, but it is the real dream of all the importer and exporter in northern Africa.
    The geographical position , the agreement ,investments, and co operations from different world sea companies will open The Moroccan businesses on the sea world trade specially with the wide globalization strategy.
