  • Everything we do on the attraction and recruitment front piggybacks on the tremendous support that our company has shown for veterans for almost 100 years now.We frequently connect with different areas of our business to include a careers component to other aspects of veteran support – whether it’s volunteer, sponsorship, philanthropy or community involvement – this is especially important given how high profile veteran unemployment is.
  • Our Veteran ERG is a game changer – recently celebrated its 30 year anniversary. – this always spurs a round of applause when we speak about this publicly. Clear proof that we were supporting our veteran employees before the current “crisis”Our Veterans ERG members serve as recruitment ambassadors – participating as job search advisors in the careers for vets program and representing us at veterans career events, sometimes alongside staffing managers, to help translate skills and resumes. Also, the fact that we have a cohesive veterans resource group is a powerful attractor to potential veteran new hires since they know there are others just like them and that they can join an instant community from day one. Also, volunteerism is a crucial component to the challenge that veterans experience after transitioning to the civilian workforce. This helps them reclaim the sense of purpose that they got from their military service by giving back to other veterans.
  • Demonstrates AT&T’s commitment to helping veterans, particularly those with service connected disabilities, to develop businesses that can sell to large enterprise like us.Due to the decreased availability of certified service dsabled veteran owned businesses, we either partner with smaller companies as subcontracted tier 2 suppliers or help train new businesses via programs like operation hand salute
  • We always resisted drawing a line in the sand with a commitment but after pressure from the First Lady at events early this year, our company committed to hiring 5,000 veterans in 5 years. In less than a full year we are almost at ½ the commitment. This is due to 1) increased self-ID 2) expanded outreach and recruiting and 2) increased hiring in the technician space where 60% of these veterans are joining us
  • Net net – we are only hiring 8% of veterans who apply to our jobs (last year it was 4%)We don’t need to do more work to increase veteran applicant flow but to increase the odds of them progressing through our process. In some parts of the business, our staffing managers could have consultative conversations with their clients about eliminating the need for industry experience, etc.Technician = slam dunkCall center – seeing some progress but many veterans don’t want those jobs (low paying, behind a desk, etc)Retail stores – there is a ton of potential to narrow the gap between applicants and hires.Events – only free, sometimes tricky to approve local travel, great way to engage and promote ATT as great company for vets, not efficient way to hire. Always include ERG reps when possible.
  • A great tool that matches military occupational code to AT&T jobGreat when someone wants to do similar work in the civilian space
