    • RESUMÉS Leverage your knowledge, skills and abilities Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • A resume is just one more tool in your backpack to achieve your goal of reaching the summit… Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • WHAT IS A RESUMÉ ?
            • A resume is a tool with one specific purpose: to win an interview. A resume is an advertisement, nothing more, nothing less.
            • A great resume doesn't just tell potential employers what you have done in the past, it makes the same assertion that all good ads do: If you buy this product, you will get these specific, direct benefits. It presents you in the best light. It convinces the employer that you have what it takes to be successful in this new position or career.
            • A good resume should be so pleasing to the eye that it stimulates interest in meeting you and learning more about you. Ultimately, it inspires the prospective employer to pick up the phone and ask you to come in for an interview.
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • WHAT ISN’T A RESUME?
      • Some people make the mistake believing that a resume is solely created to catalog the history of your past or as a personal statement or as some sort of self expression.
      • Yes, the content of a resume is focused on your job history, but write from the intention of creating interest and to ultimately persuade the potential employer to call you.
      • First impressions are always the key!
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • CRITICAL INSIGHTS
      • A quality resume is a tool that highlights important information about your skills, experience, and achievements
      • Its purpose is to:
            • Open doors, create interest and sell you
            • Highlight relevant qualifications, accomplishments and skills
            • Document your qualifications

    • CRITICAL INSIGHTS
      • Resumes have traditionally been viewed as a fundamental tool for job seekers and it still is.
      • However, today’s radically changing work environment is driving changes in how resumes are designed and used.

      • Organizational demands and trends are constantly changing over time and as a result what employers are looking for in a resume has changed as well.

      • 1. Resume Essentials
      • Do a self-assessment on paper and list all of your personal and business achievements.
      • Outline your skills and abilities as well as your work experience and extracurricular activities.

      • Include your name, address, telephone, e-mail address
      • All your contact information should go at the top of your resume.
      • Avoid nicknames.
      • Use a permanent address.
      • Use a permanent telephone number and include the area code. If you have voice mail, record a neutral greeting.
      • Add your e-mail address as many employers find it useful. **Make sure you list an e-mail address that sounds professional.
      • If you have one, include your web site address only if the web page reflects your professional ambitions and abilities and if it relates to the specific job opportunity.
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
      • Objective
      • An objective tells potential employers the sort of role you are seeking.
      • Be specific about the role you want, but be brief.
          • Don’t be too specific to disqualify yourself from consideration for certain positions where you might be qualified
      • Remember to tailor your objective to each employer you target and every job you seek.
      • Summary
      • Usually follows the objective.
      • The purpose is to create a positive snap-shot in the mind of the reader.
      • In a few lines it captures the essence of your experience, skills, traits, and sometimes your accomplishments
      • Example:
          • An energetic, articulate leader with 15 years of marketing, consulting and sales experience in the financial service field.

    • TYPES OF RESUMES Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • THE CHRONOLOGICAL RESUME
      • The most traditional and widely used.
      • Emphasizes your employment history, where you work and for how long, your job titles, responsibilities and accomplishments.
      • Your jobs are listed in reverse chronological order with the most recent first.
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • WHEN TO USE THE CHRONOLOGICAL STYLE
      • Use when:
          • You are looking for work in the same field
          • Your work history documents significant career growth with increasing responsibility
          • You are transferring skills to the same industry
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • THE FUNCTIONAL RESUME
      • A design to emphasize your skills, competencies, or expertise in specific areas rather then emphasizing employers and dates.
      • It usually incorporates accomplishments to demonstrate your expertise in a particular skill, functional area or field of business.
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • WHEN TO USE THE FUNCTIONAL STYLE
      • Use when:
          • You have inconsistent work history
          • You have been a job or career changer
          • You are entry level or re-entering the job market after a significant absence
          • You wish to sell yourself on skills and competencies not reflected in your recent job history
          • **Be aware that functional resumes are viewed by many hiring managers with suspicion because they often appear to conceal information and can be difficult to follow
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • OTHER RESUME VARIATIONS
      • Curriculum Based
          • In the academic world a resume is called a curriculum vitae, with the emphasis on educational background and published papers
          • Format is usually chronological and can exceed two pages
      • Bio, Qualifications Brief, Executive Profile
          • Written in a narrative form of about one page
          • These are used by consultants to document their qualifications for the work that they are proposing
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
    • DESIGN
      • Use white or off-white paper.
      • Use 8-1/2- x 11-inch paper.
      • Print on one side of the paper.
      • Use a font size of 10 to 14 points.
      • Use non decorative typefaces.
      • Choose one typeface and stick to it.
      • Avoid italics, script, and underlined words.
      • Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics, or shading.
      • If you must mail your resume, put it in a large envelope.
          • Do not fold your resume as scanners may misinterpret them
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com

      • Pay careful attention to spelling, punctuation, grammar, and style.
      • Proofread carefully and have several other people proofread as well.
      • Organize information in a logical fashion.
      • Keep descriptions clear and to the point.
      • Use a simple, easy-to-read font, such as Times or Arial.
      • If you can, confine your information between 1-2 pages.
      • Include as much work experience as possible, even if it doesn't relate to the job you are seeking.
      • However, remember to tailor your information to the specific job you are seeking.
      • Many large organizations today take advantage of technology to store and screen resumes and match candidates based on their specifications.
      • These management systems search for key words such as:
          • Single words or phrases that describe education, experience, skills and accomplishments as well as action verbs
      Abel Placement Consultants Inc. www.abelplacement.com
