The Purpose of the Grade 3 and 6 Assessments <ul><li>EQAO — the Education Quality and Accountability Office — conducts province-wide assessments at the primary, junior and secondary levels to measure student achievement against curriculum expectations. The data are widely used as an additional tool to guide improvements in education at the individual, school and provincial levels. </li></ul>
  4. 4. What is the value of the assessment? <ul><li>The assessments allow your child to demonstrate his or her skills and knowledge relating to reading, writing and mathematics. The results are used to improve student achievement and learning. </li></ul><ul><li>Level 4 : The student has demonstrated the required knowledge and skills-achievement surpasses the provincial standard </li></ul><ul><li>Level 3 : The student has demonstrated most of the required knowledge and skills-achievement is at the provincial standard. </li></ul><ul><li>Level 2 : The student has demonstrated some of the required knowledge and skills-achievement approaches the provincial standard. </li></ul><ul><li>Level 1 : The student has demonstrated most of the required knowledge and skills in limited ways-achievement falls much below the provincial standard </li></ul>

Common Myths <ul><li>If my child fails the EQAO assessment, he or she will fail the year. </li></ul><ul><li>If my child has a learning disability or other exceptionality he or she cannot write the test. </li></ul><ul><li>If my child’s first language is not English, he or she will fail the test. </li></ul><ul><li>The marks of the assessment affect the mark on my child’s report card. </li></ul><ul><li>Only the Grade 3 and 6 Curriculum are tested </li></ul><ul><li>I don’t have to be concerned if my child is not in Grade 3 or 6. </li></ul>

Helpful Strategies for Parents <ul><li>Make sure your child gets a good sleep and has a wholesome breakfast in the morning. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t schedule appointments during the testing time. </li></ul><ul><li>Designate a specific time and place to do homework that is free of distractions </li></ul><ul><li>Provide your child with opportunities to read, write, and speak on a regular basis </li></ul><ul><li>Engage students in oral conversations and discussions </li></ul><ul><li>Use the handouts to help students get use to the language and types of questions on the test </li></ul>

How to Help Your Child With Mathematics <ul><li>Engage child in mathematical conversations </li></ul><ul><li>Encourage your child to explain the process they used to solve the math problem </li></ul><ul><li>Allow your child to use their fingers or objects when doing math </li></ul><ul><li>Don't rush ahead until your child has mastered each step, no matter how small it may seem </li></ul><ul><li>Use positive reinforcement only </li></ul><ul><li>ALWAYS assume success </li></ul><ul><li>Read the instructions out loud to help your child learn the words </li></ul><ul><li>Do math for small blocks of time (10 to 15 minutes) to prevent burn-out </li></ul><ul><li>Ask your child's teacher to explain words if you don't know or understand the meaning. Write a note to your child's teacher in the student agenda </li></ul>
