The V represents wings outstretched. The rotary engine was invented by a German named Felix Wankel in 1957.About 40 years before its invention, 17-year-old Wankel had an improbabledream in the summer of 1919 which led to the idea of the rotary engine. In thedream, he went to a concert in his own handmade car. He even remembersboasting to his friends in the dream; "my car has a new type of engine: ahalf-turbine half-reciprocated engine. I invented it!" When he woke up in themorning, he was convinced that the dream was a premonition of the birth of anew type of gasoline engine. At the time, he had no fundamental knowledgeabout internal combustion engines, but he intuitively believed that an enginecould achieve four strokes--intake,compression, combustion, andexhaust--while rotating. This intuition actually triggered the birth of the rotaryengine, which had been attempted countless times by people all over the worldsince the 16th century. The rotary engine, which converts rotary motion directlyinto driving force, has an almost perfectly smooth operation; it also meets themost stringent technical standards. This dream and intuition went on to steerhis entire life.TOYOTA http://www.toyota.com/The Toyota logo is comprised of three ellipses, representing the heart of thecustomer, the heart of the product, and the ever expanding technologicaladvancements and opportunities that lie ahead. Another interpretation is that itrepresents the three interlocking aspects of the culture of the company - 7
  • 8. Car logos and brief introduce www.autodvdgps.comfreedom, team spirit, and progress. Also, in Japanese Toyo means anabundance of, and ta is rice. In some Asian cultures, those blessed with anabundance of rice are believe to be blessed with great wealth. The official Toyota history is, like that of most companies, fairly glossy andbare-bones. An article by Konrad Schreier, printed in the Complete Book ofToyota (a bit of a misnomer since the book is mainly a bunch of reprints ofgushing, “no criticism allowed” car reviews), brings up a large number ofmissing pieces - as does The Standard Catalog of Imported Cars.SUZUKI http://www.suzuki.com/Suzuki Motor Co. Ltd., now one of the big four, started over sixty years ago inJapan making spinning looms. Branching out into the motorcycle market, theyhave again branched out into cars, vans, trucks, outboard motors and manyother types of manufacturing. But it is motorcycles that Suzuki is best known for, and their arrival on themotorcycle market started in June 1952, with a little machine, called the "PowerFree", a 36cc single-cylinder two-stroke. It had an unprecedented feature whichwas the double-sprocket gear system, which enabled the rider to pedal with theengine assisting, pedal without engine assist, or disconnect the pedals and runwith engine power alone. The system was so ingenious, the Patent Officegranted Suzuki a financial subsidy to continue research into motorcycleengineering.EUNOSThe Mazda MX-5 is a popular sports car built by Mazda in Hiroshima, Japan. The Miata isthe worlds best-selling sports car, with 720,407 cars produced and soldbetween February 1989 and March 31, 2005. In 1922, Japans first domestically produced truck, aWolseley model A-9, was completed. In 1934, after meeting Ministry of Tradeand Industry standards, vehicles were renamed Isuzu after the Isuzu River inthe Ise Shrine area. This is the origin of the company name, which was changedto todays Isuzu Motors Limited in 1949.After World War II, development and production of trucks occurred at a feverishpace.Isuzu trucks were needed to carry all kinds of products and foodstuffs, and theyplayed a major role in reconstruction after the war. Isuzus passion for trucks isfirmly rooted in this period. Since that time, an endless variety of models fromlight-duty to heavy-duty trucks and buses have rolled off the Isuzu productionlines, with each vehicle being put to hard use in support of economic growth. 9

However, amore commonly accepted explanation is that the logo is formed by the joining oftwo family emblems and does not represent any part of a ship. Alistair Forsythemailed me with further information regarding the Mitsuibishi logo. He was toldby a Japanese-born woman that it simply means three diamonds. He adds, mitsu is baby talk for three and hishi is diamond. Like some other languages,Japanese has rules about how words sound. In this case mitsuHishi sounds tooweak so it changes to Mitsubishi.Mitsubishi Motors automotive tradition goes back to 1917 when the MitsubishiModel A, Japans first series-production automobile, was introduced. Over thenext two decades the company established themselves as an innovator, developing, amongst others, Japans first diesel engine, its first large-sized bus(the start of the world famous Fuso commercial vehicle series), its firstfour-wheel drive passenger car prototype, and its first diesel-powered truck.NISSAN http://www.nissan.com/Nissan is made up of a richly diverse group of people, as reflected in thecompanys leadership team and the numerous corporate outreach programs inwhich they participate in the community. Moore (1904-1979). Moore, a longtime radio enthusiast, had spentthe early part of the ’40s in Quito, Ecuador working for HCJB, a non-profitChristian broadcasting and engineering group.Following his return to the United States, he felt the desire to supply Christianbroadcasters like HCJB with quality electronic products. As a result, Moorefounded International Radio and Electronics Corporation (IREC) in 1947 andconverted a former chicken coop into the budding manufacturer’s firstproduction facility. The company’s early reputation was built on a family of rugged and compactopen-reel tape recorders designed to operate reliably when used bymissionaries in remote, often-primitive regions of the world. After modifyingand distributing several existing models (Magnecord, Recordio, Pentron andCrestwood) for the first couple of years, Moore obtained a patent in 1949 for agroundbreaking invention: the world’s first tape recorder with a built-in poweramplifier (15 watts). 14

On the right, a snake is eating a figure, either a child or a Saracen (depends on who you ask). The Alfa Romeo story really begins in 1906, when the Societa ItalianaAutomobili Darracq - a car company founded by Alexandre Darracq (aFrenchman and noted pioneer of automobile construction) decides to build a carfactory in southern Italy to produce low cost, affordable cars. Despite suchnoble intentions the Darracq company’s fortunes soon flounder - chiefly as aresult of the once buoyant early 20th century car market slowing down. Itdoesn’t help matters, that Darracq’s vehicles are also universally regarded asbeing much too fragile and underpowered ...and thus never likely to provepopular with Italian drivers! So in 1910, the Darracq factory, built in theindustrial suburb of Portello near Milan, is sold to a group of local car enthusiastsand investors who call themselves the Anonima Lomarda FabbricaAutomobili …or ALFA for short. 16
