  2. 2. Objectives <ul><li>Students will be able to identify the members of the string family </li></ul><ul><li>Students will be able to differentiate the sound of the string instruments </li></ul><ul><li>Students will be able to understand the placement of instruments in an orchestra </li></ul>
  3. 3. Do Now: <ul><li>Listen to the piece played by the teacher and write down the instruments that you hear in the piece </li></ul>
  4. 4. Members of the String Family Violin Viola Violoncello Double Bass How do they produce sound? Stringed instruments produce sound when the strings on the instrument are vibrated. Typically string instruments are used with bows
  5. 5. Violin <ul><li>Has four strings (E,A,D,G) </li></ul><ul><li>The modern violin has been around for roughly 500 years. It was designed in the 1500s. </li></ul><ul><li>The violin is the smallest member of the violin family. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Viola <ul><li>Violas were made as early as the 1500’s. </li></ul><ul><li>Bigger than the violin but smaller than the cello </li></ul><ul><li>Has a deeper sound than violin </li></ul><ul><li>Has four strings (A,D,G,C) </li></ul>

Cello <ul><li>The second best known instrument in the orchestra </li></ul><ul><li>Much bigger than the violin and viola </li></ul><ul><li>Have to play the instrument in between legs </li></ul><ul><li>Has four strings (E,A,D,G) </li></ul><ul><li>same as violin but an </li></ul><ul><li>octave lower </li></ul>
  8. 8. Double Bass <ul><li>A bass player has to stand up to play the bass </li></ul><ul><li>The lowest sounding and largest of all string members </li></ul><ul><li>Has four strings </li></ul><ul><li>(E,A,D,G) </li></ul>
  9. 9. Group Activity <ul><li>Listen to the following excerpts and identify which member of the string family is playing. Ten excerpts will be played </li></ul>
  10. 10. Ways to play string instruments <ul><li>Pizzicato – to pluck </li></ul><ul><li>Bowed – Placing bow on string </li></ul><ul><li>Striking – creating a percussive sound with the bow </li></ul>
