1. 1. Objectives:

To understand the various presentational devices used by writers in non-fiction and media texts

To understand how and why they have been used

 2. 2. Weaknesses in Mocks:

Discussing language when you were asked to discuss presentation (and vice versa)

Not being focused and concise enough when addressing language and effect

Not exploring/ analysing THE EFFECT of a device (especially use of fact and opinion)

 3. 3. Key questions:

Who produced text and what purpose?

Genre?

Who for (audience)?

How is meaning created?

How is it produced?

How is the ‘subject’ presented?

 4. 4. Presentational device pack:

A key revision document

You could create something similar yourself

Important to extend and develop your annotations so you focus on why the device has been used and to what effect

Let’s look at my example…

 5. 5. A relaxed, smooth edged font style has been chosen. This effectively conveys the ease of preparation of the food dishes in the magazine; it suggests a friendly tone and indicates this magazine is for the general, everyday cook not a skilled chef… The light, bright colour scheme conveys the freshness and lightness of the dishes. This is particularly apt for the summer edition, and avoids dark, ‘heavy’ colours…
 6. 6. Your turn… … try some annotations on the first text in your booklet.
 7. 7. FEEDBACK!
 8. 8. Now… … spend the next 15 minutes on the other texts in the booklet.
 9. 9. FEEDBACK!
 10. 10. Creative Task:

Think of a ‘theme’ that might be used by an examiner

Eg: ‘caring for the environment’

Create a short media text connected to this theme

Eg: ‘an advert to encourage people to recycle’

Label the presentational devices you have used, and why they are effective

 11. 11. FEEDBACK!
 12. 13. What’s the theme?
 13. 14. Computers and games consoles:

Read and digest the three different texts, then consider:

Who has this text been created for?

Why has this text been created?

Where has this text come from?

USE THE POST IT NOTES TO ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS FOR EACH TEXT

 14. 15. Let’s look more closely at: The ‘Wii’ advert(s)…
 15. 16. Now: Choose one presentational device from the texts. You are going to write a more detailed analysis, offering some personal insights and interpretations.
 16. 17. Example: THE WHITE BACKGROUND IS DEVOID OF ANY OTHER IMAGES OR OBJECTS. ALL WE SEE ARE THE PLAYERS AND THE SOFA. THIS COULD SUGGEST THAT THE GAMING EXPERIENCE IS ALL CONSUMING AND NOTHING ELSE WILL MATTER WHEN YOU ARE INVOLVED IN THE GAME. IT COULD ALSO ADD TO THE MODERN, FRESH ALMOST ‘HEALTHY’ FEEL TO THE WII AS IF IT IS A SPORTING PRODUCT…
 17. 18. Now: Choose one presentational device from the texts. You are going to write a more detailed analysis, offering some personal insights and interpretations.
 18. 19. FEEDBACK!
