Jennings School Board 2009 NSBA National Conference <ul><li>About NSBA </li></ul><ul><li>-Founded in 1940, The National School Boards Association is a not-for-profit Federation of state associations of school boards across the United States. </li></ul><ul><li>NSBA represents 95,000 local school board members, virtually all of whom are elected. These local officials govern 14,890 local school districts serving the nation's more than 47 million public school students. </li></ul><ul><li>-Its mission is to foster excellence and equity in public education through school board leadership. </li></ul><ul><li>-NSBA achieves that mission by representing the school board perspective before federal government agencies and with national organizations that affect education, and by providing vital information and services to state associations of school boards and local school boards throughout the nation. </li></ul>

Jennings School Board 2009 NSBA National Conference <ul><li>About NSBA </li></ul><ul><li>-NSBA advocates local school boards as the ultimate expression of grassroots democracy. </li></ul><ul><li>-NSBA supports the capacity of each school board-acting on behalf of and in close concert with the people of its community-to envision the future of education in its community, to establish a structure and environment that allow all students to reach their maximum potential, to provide accountability for the community on performance in the schools, and to serve as the key community advocate for children and youth and their public schools. </li></ul>

Jennings School Board 2009 NSBA National Conference <ul><li>Speakers Included: </li></ul><ul><li>Arne Duncan- U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan was nominated to be secretary of education by President-elect Barack Obama and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009. In his confirmation hearings, Secretary Duncan called education &quot;the most pressing issue facing America,&quot; adding that &quot;preparing young people for success in life is not just a moral obligation of society&quot; but also an &quot;economic imperative.&quot; Prior to his appointment as secretary of education, he served as the chief executive officer for Chicago Public Schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Toni Morrison- Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison is one of the world's most prominent authors, having won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993 for her collected works. Several of her novels have taken their place in the canon of American literature, including The Bluest Eye, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. She received the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Beloved and has been named the Jefferson Lecturer by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Morrison's writings are notable for their epic themes, vivid dialogue, and richly detailed African American characters. </li></ul><ul><li>Hill Harper- -Actor and Author </li></ul><ul><li>Best-known as coroner-turned-crime-scene-investigator on the TV show CSI, Harper graduated from Brown University (A.B. 1988) and also graduated with a J.D. from Harvard Law School, where he was a classmate of Barack Obama. Harper also obtained a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Harper is the author of two books: Letters to a Young Brother, published in 2006, and Letters to a Young Sister: DeFINE Your Destiny, published in 2008 </li></ul>
