By Definition Application software is a subclass of computer software that employs the capabilities of a computer directly and thoroughly to a task that the user wishes to perform. This should be contrasted with system software which is involved in integrating a computer's various capabilities, but typically does not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. In Laymen's terms Application software is generally the reason you turned the computer on in the first place. You need to write a letter, make a presentation, watch a DVD, etc. A nice little analogy ‘the light bulb is the application with the power plant being the system’ If you are still unclear there is a nice list of different application software in the wikipedia entry. You will not be expected to be able to put software in it’s sub category (enterprise, content access, educational, etc)
