SPARROW CONSERVATION EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
In my country, Vietnam, people like to eat birds, especially sparrows
because they think birds’ meat and blood are useful for their health. Therefore,
thousands of sparrows are killed every day. They don’t have the concept of bird
conservation and the government also ignores the plan to protect wildlife. When I
came to America 5 years ago, I recognize that American likes animals, birds much
and always ready to feed and protect them. One day in 2007, I travelled to Long
Beach Coast in South California and I saw a lot of sparrows that picked up seeds
next to people without any fear. I told my friend who has lived in San Diego that I
would join in an organization to conserve this species. He promised to help me get
information about that.
There are about 600 species of birds in California, but I choose sparrows as
a species to study and plan to conserve for my bird’s project. This is because
sparrows are a big population of birds in California. People can see them easily
everywhere, in cities as well in rural areas. The Wikipedia lists about 38 species of
Californian sparrows in the website.
At the beginning of my project, I associate to my friend in California. He is a
person who likes bird watching and birding. We intend to write a leaflet in
Vietnamese to help my people understand why and how to conserve sparrows.
2. First, my friend went to the Wildlife Conservation Organization near his
hometown to get information about sparrows and the way to conserve them. He
was also responsible to take photos of sparrows’ species.
For me, I browsed on the Internet to study the life of sparrows: where their
habitats are; how long their lives are; what kind of seeds or insects they eat; what
they impact the environment, and why we have to conserve them. I also looked
for data of GIS map about birds, sparrows in South California. I will take all of
information that my friends and I have collected then create a leaflet in
Vietnamese about Sparrows’ Conservation by Illustrator software.
My friend and I talked about our project to my relatives and my people in
Orange County and they promised they will help us to put our leaflets in
restaurants, markets, or some public places. Some people who are Vietnamese
owners of markets and restaurants told they can contribute to the project by
funding for printing our leaflets.
Although our project is not completed yet, there is something that
accomplished. Those are the supports of my relatives and my people for the
project.
