Dear Judges:
My name is Paige Toddy, and for my senior project I wanted to combine my two passions; one
being helping the earth and the other being interior design. After a lot of thought, I knew I had
come up with the perfect senior project for me; redesigning a room with eco friendly products.
Before long I was researching everything from products that contain harmful or non-recyclable
materials to products that are safe for the environment. Creating my product was a very thought-
provoking process. It was difficult for me to figure out just how I wanted to incorporate
environmental issues with practical design.
My product was redesigning a room and refurbishing furniture to put in it, while being
aware of the environment. My research paper was written on the proposed question of whether or
not “going green” is really worth the time and effort that is put into each project. I knew I had to
increase my creativeness while working with green products, so I researched constantly. Through
my research I came across many articles explaining that clients are now insisting on “going
green” in their household. Although the room was fun to design, I encountered many obstacles.
At first it was a struggle trying to figure out meetings with my facilitator. We came to the
solution that we would plan meeting times on Sundays for the week ahead. The second was
incorporating eco friendly products into the room that my facilitator was not aware of. After
finally coming up with common ground to meet the goals of my final product I knew my product
was going to be perfect. The next problem I ran into was trying to find eco friendly products that
fit my budget. I went online and researched a lot of different products that I could use in the
room and were discounted. My research paid off because I found coupons for free quarts of paint
and mail in rebates for buying eco friendly products. Overall my research saved me time and
money in completing my desired product.
Researching my research paper topic helped me realize all the work I needed to put into
my project to make it the best it could be. With my research I found that many interior designers
do not know anything about designing with eco friendly products, and can potentially harm the
environment more than anyone else. Because of this I chose to address the issue and become
more aware of the design field and at the same time the well being of the environment. While
working on my senior project I have learned several things about myself. Something surprising
that I learned about myself was that my organizational skills are better than I ever predicted. I
enjoyed getting all of the projects together and ready to work with on a timely basis. I also
acquired the skill of productive research. As I was completing my product I always took notes on
facts I did not know and new products I would find that were eco friendly. The organized notes
really helped me keep all my thoughts in order. On the other hand, a negative quality I learned
about myself was that I have too many conflicting ideas. Trial and error helped me realize that
2. my first instinct was always the best one. Over course of my senior project I gradually learned
that interior designing was not the right fit for me. I had the interest I needed for the short run,
yet all day every day it would be a struggle for me. I feel as if I would use it more as a hobby
than as a career. My post-secondary education will be at the University of North Georgia. While
there I will explore many different studies which will give me a better feel of what I am suited
for and will enjoy in the long run.
Although my initial desire to pursue a career in interior design faded throughout the
process, it was a pleasurable project to work on over many months. Completing my product was
a huge learning stretch that included learning about myself, the environment and interior design.
I cannot wait to use the skills I acquired in the real world. Thank you so much for your time.
Sincerely,
Paige Toddy
