Jeff Raquet, Senior Lecturer of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Carolina
at Charlotte, was faced with a continually growing CAD lab with fresh faced freshman and
took the opportunity to implement a new type of learning versus the age old engineering textbooks. With the ever increasing costs of textbooks, Jeff researched other opportunities in order to not only save his students money on textbooks, but to save himself time in teaching his large introductory courses.
Jeff beta tested PTC University’s eLearning Libraries and Precision
LMS into his Introduction to Engineering Design freshman level
course of about 120 students in the fall semester of 2012. After the
price of PTC University became more affordable than a textbook
for students and since his students were new to the university, it
sounded like the perfect opportunity to test the system and get
feedback from his students who hadn’t already become accustomed
to an engineering textbook.
Using PTC University’s Precision LMS, Jeff was able to create his
introductory course at UNC Charlotte with pre-existing content in
eLearning Libraries, such as the fundamentals course, and was
able to skip over courses that weren’t relevant to his current curriculum.
The most useful tool for him was being able to post his
assignments and due dates within the tool with PDFs that linked to
his existing download models.
“It was not only great to utilize the course content to build my own
‘textbook’, but it was helpful to be able to track the usage time
of my students, when they were online, how long, and if they had
completed the assignments or not. I really want to help my students
save some money. By reducing their textbook price by $75
and giving them a resource that will track the latest versions of the
software throughout their education at UNC Charlotte, it’s a wise
investment. As a teacher, it saves me time teaching so it really is a
win-win from both sides.”
After testing the system in the fall semester, Jeff has decided to
implement this system with his spring semester class of almost 200
students and is suggesting that PTC University be utilized in upper
level courses at UNC Charlotte as well to continue their students’
education with the system. He will also be looking into utilizing the
testing and quiz resources throughout Precision LMS in order to
automate the assessments of his students.
