While organizational alignment around strategy and planning is universally acknowledged as important to any project deployment, especially one with the scope and organizational impact of PLM, our survey revealed it was the depth and breadth of that alignment, along with the detail of planning, that made a significant difference in the outcomes experienced by high performers.

The survey included interviews with 190 business and IT leaders from manufacturing companies in Europe and North America, all with direct experience in PLM systems and solutions. Survey data showed that 22% could be classified as “high performers,” based on much greater results in the top three business objectives for PLM: improving time to market, increasing product development efficiency, and reducing overall product cost.

Rather than rushing to implementation, the high performers took the time and made the upfront investments to align their PLM strategy with their overall business strategy and ensure executive agreement on the value to be achieved with the program.

In planning for business value, the high performers typically included more functional areas in their programs and addressed more business processes. Along with engineering and manufacturing, for example, the high performers often included quality planning, procurement, and even marketing and sales in their programs.

High performers were also much more likely to created detailed, long-term implementation roadmaps that linked desired outcomes to specific process improvements and software capabilities.

Perhaps most important, high performers more often managed their implementation with business value metrics or scorecards, rather than just focusing on project milestones and completion.

Finally, once the strategy and plans were in place, high performers were more likely to communicate their strategy and progress to key stakeholders on a regular basis.
