LORAIN COUNTY SHERIFF
Dear Friends & Supporters,
Sheriff Phil R. Stammitti is up for re-election in 2012. While he has an
uncontested March 6th 2012 primary, he faces opposition in the general
election on November 6th, 2012. Sheriff Stammitti has over 38 years of
experience in law enforcement with 26 of these years at the Lorain County
Sheriff’s Office. He has been our Sheriff for the past 11 years, and is
counting on your support in the upcoming year.
Sheriff Stammitti is a lifelong resident of Lorain County. He graduated
from Lorain High School in 1968, and served in the United States Navy for
four years from 1968 – 1972. Three of those years were served onboard the USS Saratoga CVA-
60 Aircraft carrier and his last year aboard the USS Johnston DD-821 Destroyer. During his 4 year
tour he achieved the rank of E-5 and was honorably discharged in 1972.
Sheriff Stammitti then enrolled in Lorain County Community College in 1977 where he graduated
with honors earning a degree in Police Science.
In April of 1973 Sherriff Stammitti joined the Lorain Police Department. He served as a patrol
officer, narcotics detective, and on the special squad felony/robbery unit. In 1978, he was voted by
his peers as the first Policeman of the Year at the Lorain Police Department.
Former Lorain County Sheriff, Martin Mahony, hired Sheriff Stammitti in 1986. Sheriff Stammitti
served as the Lieutenant in charge of the Detective Bureau, and was promoted to Captain in 1988.
His duties also included serving as the Administrative/Personnel Officer, as well as the Law
Enforcement Director and Jail Administrator.
In November 2000, Sheriff Stammitti was elected as Lorain County Sheriff, he took office on
January 1, 2001 and is currently in his third term as Lorain Country’s Sheriff.
As a driven and proactive community servant, Sheriff Stammitti continues to better himself as
evidenced by his completion and participation in the following activities:
• Graduating from the National Sheriff’s Institute in April 2002
• Being designated as a Certified Labor Relations Professional by the School of Labor &
Industrial Relations at Michigan State University in 2007
• Becoming a Certified Law Enforcement Manager
2. • Serving as the District/Director on the Board of the Buckeye State Sheriff’s Association for
the North/East section of Ohio
Sheriff Stammitti is married to Mary Jo (nee: DeAngelis) and they reside in Brownhelm Township.
They have four daughters (one deceased) and two grandchildren. They also have one dog, a
chocolate lab named Scooby.
