We've used RefWorks to create embeddable lists of new titles

Subject librarians add details of new books to a RefWorks folder…

… then share that folder and enable an RSS feed.

Here’s the shared view of the folder.

Here’s the raw RSS feed – each item links back to RefWorks.

Next use Yahoo! Pipes to improve the ‘raw’ RefWorks RSS feed.

These pipe elements grab the feed and rewrite bits of it using Regex …

… scrape Amazon.co.uk for the product description…

… apply some pretty formatting (inc. book cover images) using HTML…

… and replace the links to RefWorks with links to our OPAC.

Here are the results of the finished Pipe (using an example RefWorks feed).

Here is that same finished result as an RSS feed…

… more of the same feed – this one is new books for Food Technology…

… yet more – couple of glitches, would like to truncate long descriptions…

… but it’s not bad. Icons on the right-hand edge link out to Amazon, Google etc.

Finally, pass the RSS feed through Feedburner for a pretty URL + email subs.

Subject librarians can embed the finished feed in web pages using Feed2JS .

For example – here’s the new books for Social Work feed in Blackboard VLE.
