Introduce ourselves. Here to talk about ‘Jerome’. Which is a library ‘un-project’ at the University of Lincoln.
Why is it called Jerome?
Important to note that this is an experiment – we’re not looking to replace ‘live’ systems just yet! That’s why we call it an ‘un-project’ (divorcing ourselves from formal project management). Benefits: we can give things a go and see if they work! Drawbacks: no budget – has to be done in ‘spare time’ – not necessarily taken seriously.
(We like this quote, even if Henry Ford never really said it…) We’re not going to limit ourselves to existing ways of working – not trying to re-invent the OPAC; trying something a bit different. Opportunity for disruptive intervention! So what is it?
It’s a box which absorbs data from any source we can think of (and which we can ‘get into’). At the moment, it consists of: MARC records from our library catalogue… ‘scraped’ from our web OPAC (HiP) using a script written by Dave Pattern at Huddersfield. Records from our Institutional Repository – easy to get at via OAI-PMH – IR is designed to be open. E-journal TOCs from a list of ISSNs, using the JournalTOCs API. In the future: Archives (again via OAI-PMH) Full text? From databases that allow it… Open bib data (e.g. from British Library) Web search results Who knows?!
It’s also a tool for getting at that aggregated data, in new ways. New search tools / information portal (is this an OPAC?????) Mobile search and ‘use’ applications APIs – passing the data on to other innovations elsewhere in University and potentially outside the Uni (opening our data?)
Finally, it’s about getting extra value out of that data by combining it with other stuff at our disposal. E.g. enriching book records with Amazon, Google Books, LibraryThing, etc. etc. Throwing it against user profile information (course, location etc.) to personalise the experience in a way we can’t do easily at the minute. Letting the techies have at it – building a system that learns from user interaction to improve future searches.
