  2. 2. What is AR? <ul><li>‘Accelerated Reader’ is a reading program that encourages students to: </li></ul><ul><li>Read an AR book </li></ul><ul><li>Take a quiz in the lab or library </li></ul><ul><li>Accumulate points for prizes </li></ul>
  3. 3. What does an AR book look like? <ul><li>All AR books have a yellow dot on the spine. </li></ul><ul><li>Inside the back cover, you will find the reading level and the points. </li></ul><ul><li>The points are also located inside the yellow dot on the spine. </li></ul>

Where are the AR books located? <ul><li>AR books are in every section of the LMC. </li></ul><ul><li>Over 3,500 to choose from! </li></ul><ul><li>Dozens of series to choose from like: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Matt Christopher </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Hank the Cowdog </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Dolphin Diaries </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Junie B. Jones </li></ul></ul>

How do I know my reading level? <ul><li>Your reading teacher will tell you. </li></ul><ul><li>Pick books close to or on your reading level. </li></ul><ul><li>Ex : If your reading level is 4.0 then you should pick books from 4.0 to 4.5 </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. </li></ul>
  6. 6. How do I find a book on my level? <ul><li>Ask my library teacher. </li></ul><ul><li>Use Destiny. </li></ul><ul><li>Ask a friend to help you. </li></ul><ul><li>Use the AR binder. </li></ul>
  7. 7. When and where may I take an AR test? <ul><li>Before school (8:15-8:27) </li></ul><ul><li>After school (3:05-3:20) </li></ul><ul><li>During computer lab. </li></ul><ul><li>During exchange weeks in library. </li></ul>
  8. 8. Can I take the same test twice? <ul><li>Sorry, you cannot. </li></ul><ul><li>Please read the book carefully. You must answer a certain number of questions correctly in order to pass the test. </li></ul><ul><li>Use the 5-finger test before selecting an AR book. </li></ul>
  9. 9. Who keeps track of my progress? <ul><li>If you pass the test, the print-out will tell you: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>How many tests you have taken; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>How many tests you have passed; </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Your total AR points to date. </li></ul></ul>
  10. 10. Are there prizes? <ul><li>A top boy and girl are selected from each grade to receive a trophy in June. </li></ul><ul><li>Check the bulletin board in the hallway and in the library for details. </li></ul><ul><li>We have a 5, 25, 50, 100, and 200 Club! </li></ul>
  11. 11. When does AR start and end? <ul><li>AR kicks off at the beginning of October and usually ends the last week in May. </li></ul><ul><li>Students can exchange their points for cool prizes starting the middle of May. </li></ul>
  12. 12. Do I have to participate? <ul><li>Yes. AR is part of your language arts grade on your report card. </li></ul><ul><li>Your reading teacher will give your class a monthly goal and reading level. </li></ul><ul><li>Kids who do well with AR do better in school! </li></ul><ul><li>Make up your mind now you will win! </li></ul>

Cool Tips to Know <ul><li>Switch out your books before and after school as soon as they are read. </li></ul><ul><li>Don’t take out a book that is too difficult. </li></ul><ul><li>Ask friends what books they are reading. </li></ul><ul><li>Ask Miss Setser to help you find a book or a series that you may really enjoy! </li></ul>
