2. Maria was born on the
28th of June, 1972 in
Moscow. She is the 1999
World champion in ladies'
singles, becoming the
first Russian woman to
win the title. She is a
three-time European
champion. She is a sixtime Russioan national
champion. She placed
fourth at the 1998 Winter
Olympics and sixth at the
2002 Winter Olympics.
3. Maria started to skate
when she was 5 and her
coach considered her to
be very talented. But
real success came when
Elena Tchaikovskaya
became her coach. She
helped Maria to find
her own ‘ballet’ style.
Butyrskaya won her
first European title at
the 1988 Europaen
Championships.
4. At the 2000 World Championships Maria was
first in the short program and finished third
overall, winning her third World medal.

short program as

6. After ending her career, Butyrskaya
began coaching, working primarily
with young skaters. She is based at
the Olympic Reserve Skating School
in Moscow.
She is happily married and has 2
children – a son and a daughter.
