Program:nature Zine 1 Summer 2007
This zine is one component of a multi-facetted platform under the same name. The central mission of Program:nature is to explore the principle formation, movement, and architecture of information with an underlying belief that our biological, social, and cultural systems can be understood through this framework. Our goal is to both advance new mathematical abstract systems capable of articulating the dynamic formation of complex patterns as well as research the direct manifestation of these concepts as they occur in our external world. In this sense, Program:nature is at the forefront of a meaningful paradigm shift in both pure and applied disciplines. Given that our manufactured world is confined to the limits of our understanding and concurrently reflective of both intellectual and sociological pursuits, i.e. modernism and the industrial revolution, Program:nature seeks to forward a movement towards understanding the engine of creativity, or in other words, that which is responsible for form and creativity in nature. This movement can be seen as a progression from stagnant and mechanical thought and structures towards the creation of complex and dynamic systems. The role of this zine is to elucidate these concepts through a more accessible and design oriented vernacular, with the goal of permeating collective ideological constructs. Hopefully through the articulation of these principles in a more real and familiar context, we can start to understand this new paradigm better. And then create

  3. 3. PNTHE CREATIVE PROCESS: INFORMATION The focus of Programnature’s research and the central theme of our first issue is the process of creation. How does issue 1 everything we see actually form. Nature is an incredibly creative force. When comparing a human-made artifact to that created by a non-human natural process, it has been a safe assumption that the simpler artifact is the one made by humans. This is because the formal methods we have for creating are inadequate at dealing Program Nature Issue One with theNY New York, processes involved. From mathematics to engineering, the formal methods employed fail to account for the complex May 2007 formation of an artifact. Published By: Program Natureshows how this dichotomy is beginning to dissolve. PN#1 Press As we By: Created understand the flow of information and create formal languages to articulate this, we begin to discover that nature’s Morgan Silver Greenberg Kovas Boguta creative engine is closer at hand than expected. Though the concepts are simple, the conceptual shift is profound -- away from stagnant artifacts and towards dynamic process-based interactions. Through this lens, we see how natural form emerges in all process-based systems, from the biological to the social to the cultural, and understand that the unpredictability of growth and transformation is an inherent and irreducible component of creativity. We can also see that with the right language, it can still be manipulated and harnessed -- opening a vast frontier of interaction between human creativity and that of nature.
