    • Tense Shift Definition: Switching tense without a valid reason is called tense shift. Suddenly switching tense can be a major problem as it will surely confuse readers. Correction Method: Once you use a verb tense, maintain it consistently. Identify the original tense, and switch all following verbs to match (unless a verb has a different tense for a justifiable reason). Examples: 1. Incorrect: Bill dreamed of getting a promotion, and his dream comes true. Correct: Bill dreamed of getting a promotion, and his dream came true. 2. Incorrect: When I first began working as a waitress, I hate my job. Correct: When I first began working as a waitress, I hated my job. 3. Incorrect: Sam passed the ball to Trish, who scores the winning goal. Correct: Sam passed the ball to Trish, who scored the winning goal.
