AutoCAD Ground Rules <ul><li>Multiple ways to achieve same function </li></ul><ul><ul><li>This course is meant to be an introduction to CAD software and be a foundation for your understanding how Design Professions use this program </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Will focus on common commands </li></ul><ul><li>Reading Assignments from the text book Using AutoCAD 2010: Basics will be referenced in lectures accordingly </li></ul><ul><li>You are responsible for your files, materials and equipment </li></ul><ul><li>The Esc key will terminate any command you are in, at anytime </li></ul>
  3. 3. AutoCAD Ground Rules <ul><li>To become proficient in any CAD software one must use it frequently and become familiar with its command. Therefore, come to class 10-15 minutes early and review previous class materials. Use spare stations during other classes (with the professor’s permission) to review outside of class time. </li></ul><ul><li>In short … USE THE PROGRAM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE! </li></ul>
  4. 4. The Look of The Program Menu Tabs Tool Ribbon The Drawing Area The Drawing Area: Where the user will construct and manipulate a drawing.
  5. 5. The Look of The Program UCS Icon Crosshair Cursor Layout Tabs Command Prompt Status Bar Crosshair Cursor: Shows the user where they are in the Drawing Area. . UCS Icon: The User Coordinate System tells the user where in space they are drawing. (The standard setting is where the “y” coordinate is vertical and the “x” coordinate is horizontal). More experienced users can change this setting in order to draw a 3-dimensional object.
  6. 6. The Look of The Program <ul><li>Layout Tabs: </li></ul><ul><li>Used for setting up sheets to plot. One tab is for Model Space and the other tabs are Paper space (the environment where you plot) </li></ul><ul><li>Status bar: </li></ul><ul><li>Shows the user the coordinate of the crosshair cursor (to the left) and a series of system variables that can be toggled on and off (to the right) </li></ul>

The Look of The Program <ul><li>The Command Prompt is the lowest of the three lines at the bottom of the AutoCAD window </li></ul><ul><li>Information is entered to perform a certain tasks (where AutoCAD responds to the user commands) </li></ul><ul><li>Prompts for additional options </li></ul><ul><li>Tallies all the information entered into the program </li></ul>
  8. 8. The Look of The Program <ul><li>Ribbon </li></ul><ul><li>Like the newer Microsoft Office programs, AutoCAD has a series of Ribbon Menus which house its Commands . They are organized under 6 groups </li></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>The Command Prompt </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Most AutoCAD commands are common words </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For Example - to draw a line, the user can type in “line” at the command prompt to start the command. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The program will now respond accordingly </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>All of AutoCAD commands are listed on Pages 1031-1043 in the appendix of your book </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>The Command Prompt </li></ul><ul><ul><li>There are also a list of Aliases that can be used to enter commands. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Aliases are “ Short hand ” ways of typing in a command at the command prompt. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Common Aliases </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ L ” for Line </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ E ” for Erase </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ CP ” for Copy </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>“ M ” for Move </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>All of AutoCAD Aliases are listed on Pages 868-870 in the appendix of your book. </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>The Command Prompt </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Syntax - Depending on the command you choose, AutoCAD will require specific information from the user </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For Example - to draw a line the program asks for two points to be specified, for a circle the program asks for a center point and the radius of the circle. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Watch the command prompt until you are familiar with the various commands to insure you are giving the proper information </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Some commands will have options within them by pressing a key…like the circle command </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Pressing ENTER executes the syntax and the command </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Remember the ESC key will end all commands at anytime </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>The Command Prompt </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Numeric values </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>AutoCAD accepts all numeric value in inches by default! </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To insure that a value is in feet you must put a tick mark following it </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For Example - type in 2’ for two feet, for 2’-6” you may leave off the ” from the 6 (e.g. 2’-6) </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>Ribbons </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Common way of accessing AutoCAD commands </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Commands organized in related groups </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Examples - Draw commands, Modify commands, Annotation Commands. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Also allows users to access a variety of construction methods for certain shapes </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>All of AutoCAD Pull-Down menus are listed on Pages 1089-1094 in the appendix of your book </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>Toolbars </li></ul><ul><ul><li>More common way to access commands </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Click on the icon and the command prompt will respond accordingly </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>View a list of all the toolbars by right-clicking on any icon </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Checks by the name indicate toolbar is open </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>All of AutoCAD Pull-Down menus are listed on Pages 1083-1088 in the appendix of your book </li></ul></ul>
  16. 16. Entering Commands <ul><li>Toolbars </li></ul><ul><ul><li>When you select a new toolbar it will be “Floating” on the screen </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>If you move it close to the edges of the drawing area, it will be “Docked” to the edge of the window </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>Toolbars </li></ul><ul><ul><li>You have as many docked or floating toolbars as you require </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>To un-dock the toolbar click and drag the gray tab at the end of the toolbar into the drawing area </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Move or close the toolbar as desired </li></ul></ul>

Entering Commands <ul><li>Note: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>The Menu Bar area and the Standard Toolbar are similar to other Windows Applications </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>For Example - Save, open, print, cut, and undo commands are all the same as other applications </li></ul></ul>Use the Universal Shortcuts!

Starting a Drawing <ul><li>Type in “Startup” at the command prompt </li></ul><ul><li>Make sure the variable is 1 (not 0) </li></ul><ul><ul><li>1 then Enter </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Now click on </li></ul><ul><li> File  New </li></ul><ul><li> Or </li></ul><ul><li> “ Control+N” </li></ul><ul><li>The New Drawing Wizard will appear </li></ul>0
  21. 21. Starting a Drawing <ul><li>Select “Use a Wizard” </li></ul><ul><li>Select “Quick Setup” then click “OK” </li></ul>

Starting a Drawing <ul><li>Select Units (Architectural), click Next </li></ul><ul><li>Select Area (100000’ x 100000’) , click Finish </li></ul>NOTE: You can not enter commas in the value This step sets up the unit of measurement for the drawing. This step sets up the limits of the drawing.
