As silly as it may sound, the term
wardrobe malfunction is commonly used
whenever celebrities slip up and
accidentally expose their private parts in

than what you might think. The term is
now synonymous with celebritys
accidental exposure of themselves, and
has even been translated and used in
several other European languages as well. All of this is despite the fact that it only came into
use less than a decade ago.
Wardrobe malfunction first started to become an acceptable term in 2004, when Janet Jackson
and Justin Timberlake used it as an excuse for Timberlake ripping off part of Jacksons top,
partially exposing her breast. They both claim it was an accident, and Timberlake was only
supposed to rip off part of the costume, leaving Janets bra intact. However, things didnt quite
work out as they had planned and Jacksons breast was exposed live on television for the world
to see.
The fact that the incident occurred on live US television is bad enough, but because it occurred
during the halftime show of the Super Bowl, one of the most watched television events in the
US, caused a massive scandal and many people were outraged that children were able to view
nudity in such a way, even if it was truly an accident as Timberlake and Jackson claim.
Obviously the pop duo was advised by their publicists to use this term to try and soften the blow
and cover up for their actions. Whatever the case, the media picked up the term and it soon
made its way into thousands of news stories.
