The following proposal looks to create a fansite insupport of the FOX comedy series: New Girl. Thisfansite must effectively engage the show’s devotedcore audience, considering its demographics, needsand expectations.2Objective
“After a bad break-up, Jess, an offbeat young woman, movesinto an apartment loft with three single men. Although theyfind her behavior very unusual, the men support her… mostof the time.”In other words: imagine Friends, but with one girl living withthe rest of the boys.3New Girl: An Introduction
Summary of Key Findings4• Show features characters with uniquepersonalities/style that share screen time.• Each character engages with a different audiencesegment. Fans bonds with certain characters.• Fans, while engaged viewers, do not need to watch theshow live/immediately. Watched later on DVR/Hulu+.• Repeat episode viewing less important than re-watching individual scenes.
Summary of Key Findings5• Episode previews not desired; upcoming guest stars, however, are of interest.• Actor bios and past/upcoming projects also of interest(as most of the show’s actors are largely unknown).• Series would be purchased for additional content.Theme song might be purchased.• Only light engagement with show’s social media.
Fansite Recommendations61. Proposed Game: Existing fansites use templated, self-selected personality quizzes (such as, Which Characterare You?). Because of the show’s use of roommates andtheir relationships, a more unique quiz would be WhichCharacter is Your Roommate? Results would be sent to targeted friend/roommate,syndicated through social media. A more viral approach, this would encourage the target to take the same quizabout the originator and/or other roommates, and helpconnect past roommates.
Fansite Recommendations72. Proposed Feature: Many of the storylines revolvearound relationships, and characters’ next boy/girlfriend. Using the popular bracket-style tournament format, thisseries of user polls would determine a fictional boyfriendfor the main characters (Jess/boyfriend, Nick/girlfriend).As a fansite, candidates would be derived from any show, from any time period…For example, who would move on in the boyfriendbracket, in a match-up between Peter Griffin (Family Guy)and Sam (Cheers).
Fansite Recommendations83. Proposed Feature: Many of the relationships involveguest stars, with fan interest in who will next appear onthe show. A series of polls would vote on the celebrity fansexpect/hope to appear next on the show. Might also giveodds, depending on overall user responses. Syndicatedthrough social media to initiate fan discussion.
Fansite Recommendations94. Proposed Feature: The characters are uniquely styled, and appeal to different audience segments. A line-up of the characters, with fans able to upload theirown/friends’ faces onto the actors, to send around as avisual meme. Fans might also swap in/swap arounddifferent fashion choices.
Fansite Recommendations105. Proposed Feature: The show is largely episodic, andfans could collaborate in an interactive storyline.Fans would have an online platform to develop an existing,open-ended story--with guided choices or fan voting todetermine dialogue and plot turns. End result would be apartially fan-developed script that could potentially air.
Fansite Recommendations11* Proposed Applet: Fans may have come across the showfrom ads/friend recommendations, and may not know ofsimilar shows. Using New Girl as a preferred show, a “Spotify”-styleapproach to programs would put such shows into anongoing playlist, with fans able to “like” or “skip” a givenepisode. Based on viewing practices, the feature would“learn” more specific user preferences and serve moreengaging content.
Advertising Recommendations121. Match.com: Appropriate, considering the nature of theshow about young roommates and their dating lives.2. Mylife.com/Friendsreunited.com: Likewise, the show’sroommate relationships can generate nostalgia forone’s former roommates and living situations.3. Online Apparel/Furniture: What the characters wear(and the furniture in their loft) can influence and appealto fans. Characters are portrayed by young celebrities, which may affect the style choices of the typicalaudience, ages 16-35.
