Syphilis is a type of sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the bacterium
Treponema Pallidum. Syphilis, which is also called lues; (from a Latin word meaning
plague), has been a major public health problem since the sixteenth century. It is
estimated that about 50 million persons worldwide need treatment for syphilis with 12
million new cases added every year. The incidence of syphilis was highest in women
between 20 to 24 years of age and in men between 35 to 39 years of age.
The syphilis infection is mostly transmitted by sexual contact with an infected person.
The bacterium spreads from the initial ulcer (sore) of an infected individual to the skin or
mucous membranes (linings) of the genital area, mouth or anus of an uninfected sexual
