The light bulb has been running out of friends recently Australia is banning them in 2010 California and Canada have decided to ban the sale of incandescent bulbs by 2012 A U.S. Senate committee is working on a proposal that would phase out the light bulb in 10 years The European Union is looking at banning them
  6. 6. And in New Jersey, where the first practical incandescent bulb emerged from Thomas Edison's laboratory in , a bill has been introduced to ban their use in government buildings

  13. 13. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is putting LED lighting in its in-store refrigerators, where the cold dims fluorescents and incandescents produce too much heat That is a nice niche use!
  14. 14. A high-end 10-watt LED light bulb currently costs just under $100. It replaces an incandescent 100-watt light bulb that typically costs around $1. So at first, the 10-watt LED light seems to be $99 more expensive Yep! that’s expensive!
  15. 15. For applications in places where dealing with a burned-out bulb can pose a serious safety concern--cost is a minor consideration
  16. 16. Major lighting manufacturers Spurred on by the federal Next Generation Lighting Initiative have formed consortia with semiconductor producers to mass-produce LEDs
  17. 17. By some estimates, white-light LEDs could capture a quarter of the existing incandescent and fluorescent lighting markets as early as 2012
