What is an Aneurysm?
- An abnormal bulging of an artery
- Can occur in any artery in the body though aorta in the abdomen is the commonest site
Why do Aneurysms Occur?
- Advanced age (>55 years)
- History of smoking
- History of atherosclerosis
- Family history of aneurysms
How are Aneurysms Found?
- Many found by accident on routine examination: most patients don’t have symptoms
- Patient may have abdominal or back pain
- Found by chance on an x-ray
Why do Aneurysms need to be Treated?
- Risk of rupture and death
- Risk of complications
