It also attempts to bridge the gap between the visual and audio i.e. to visualizethe auditory information such as the characteristic movements and to be able todesign a system that has the ability to teach, assist and help one to learn withouta teacher.p r o j ec t d el i v er a b l e s1. A notation system that visualizes the movement from one note to anotherusing simple visual devices.2. This notation system manifested into a template that could be used to explainthe movement of a particular raga.p r o j ec t c h a l l en g e s1. One of the biggest challenges of this project was to translate information thatis mainly in the auditory realm into a visual structure. The information herewas the vast knowledge conventionally taught using the oral tradition wherethe student learns by imitating the preceptor.2. Another big challenge was to explain the music system to an untutoredwestern audience.SaralSurm a s t er s’ p r o j ec t

A grid-unit that provides basic crucial information: the bus-number, graphicalrepresentation of the bus-route, platform number, visual indication of the typeof service and schedule.2. As added information to this structure, fares at each stop and an accentuationof the main bus-stands within the route map.3. A grid made up of these basic units showcasing all the routes related to aparticular bus stand.4. Along with this grid, the user is also given an index of all bus-stops mentionedin this matrix with location coordinates for the grid.p r o j ec t c h a l l en g e s1. This project required first hand research to understand the bus route systemin the city.2. Typography played a critical aspect in a project like this as large amounts ofinformation needed to presented in a limited space. Frutiger was used the maproute map and Swiss 721 was used for the route numbers.TheOmniGuideu n d er g r a d uat e d i p l o m a p r o j ec t

  • 15. 15i n f o r m at i o nd e s i g np r a d n ya d i g h ed e s i g n p o r t f o l i o 2013c l i en tBangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporationdat e2009 March - Junep r o j ec t b ac kg r o u n dMapunity, a Bangalore based company, which has led the development of UrbanTransport Information Systems for a number of cities - Bangalore, Chennai,Hyderabad, Delhi. The purpose of these systems is to create real-time knowledgeof traffic conditions in cities. These are then made widely available through Airtel’smobile telecom network to city residents, and also accessible online.I was a part of the team that redesigned the website that dealt with the Bangalorecity traffice conditions. This website would showcase route maps for the servicesoffered by the government agency that dealt with the local bus transport system.Simple route maps were designed for a newly introduced bus service. These mapswould provide the user/traveller with all the information while travelling by the localbus transport. These maps were customized for one particular kind of bus service. They providedinformation such as the route of the route, timings, price charts, location maps andalso is provided in the vernacular typeface as well. The maps were also designed tobe downloaded off the website and then could be printed out on A4 sheets whichmade them very convenient to use.p r o j ec t c h a l l en g e sThere were some fundamental challenges concerning the design of these bus maps.Firstly the inconsistencies with the base data. There were no official records of theroute information such as the timings or the route information itself. The timings ofthe bus route did not follow a pattern of any kind, so it was not possible to determinean average amount of time between any two routes. This problem was also due to the fact that bus system in Bangalore is not asadvanced as it is in cities like New York or London for example a typical bus shelter inBanglore is not capable of indicating information like the arrival of the next bus.m a p u n i t y p r o j ec tBMTC

Canara Bankwas and still is one of India’s largest public sector bank with a large number of patrons. All the collateral of the previous design had never been designed keeping usabilityin mind. Customers were used to this, and thus never complained. Also the fact thatthe client was a bank, the legal content dominated the customer’s understanding andaesthetics. Some of the challenges included Canara Bank, being a pan Indian bank required all theapplications to be rendered in multiple languages. Usability was one other importantissue. One of the biggest challenges in this project was to understand the content andthen represent it in a manner that was understandable by a customer with a diverseeducational level.CanaraBankwo r k d o n e f o r r ay +k e s h ava n | t h e b r a n d u n i o n

It is not about hearing this sound but to experience it byquieting your mind. This catalogue has to contain basic information relating to the performance such asthe explanation of the term “Anahat Nad”, the artistic concept of the performance,a brief introduction to Kabir, the poems that are going to be performed at theperformance, some information about the artists performing, their individualachievements and their music style and finally a glossary of all the terms and adirectory of contacts.p r o j ec t c h a l l en g e s1. This catalogue had to be designed for a foreign audience that meant that theHindi words of the poems had to be written in English and an explanation ofeach line had to given to understand the beauty of the poem.2. The catalogue had to have a serene, calm, non-cluttered, respectable layout,to represent the free-ness of the concept “Anahat Nad”.3. The typography was the most beautiful aspect of this catalogue. The hindi orthe Devnagiri script was used to bring in an Indian touch to the catalogue. It also added a sense of fluidity to the layout.4. The graphic element of broken strings was used through out the book as anmetaphor to represent ‘the silent sound’ and this served as an element thatconnected the different chapters of the book.TheAnahatNadt h e u n -s t u c k s o u n d
