Reading Strategies Reading Strategies – plans for solving problems encountered in constructing meaning Why learn reading strategies? 1)Strategies help to improve reading comprehension as well as efficiency in reading 2)By using strategies, you will read in the way that expert readers do 3)Strategies help readers to process the text actively, to monitor comprehension, and to connect what they are reading to their own knowledge and to other parts of the text
  4. 4. PREDICT - Check headlines, look for key words and guess what the text will be about e.g. – Statistics…… what kind of statistics? CLARIFY - If you don’t understand something, reread, look for clues e.g. – Aged 16 and over… does that include 16 year olds?
  5. 5. VISUALIZE Make a picture in your head.
  6. 6. ASK QUESTIONS -Interact with the material e.g. – How many British people are common law? MAKE CONNECTIONS -Connect the material to your prior knowledge e.g. – I know the divorce rate in Korea is much higher.
  7. 7. SUMMARIZE -Retell what has happened e.g. – The majority of Brits are married, and not too many are divorced PREDICT CLARIFY VISUALIZE ASK QUESTIONS MAKE CONNECTIONS SUMMARIZE
  8. 8. EXERCISE 1 – PG. 4 (Think/Pair/Share) In pairs: - introduce yourself and become best friends - read the instructions & think about what kind of reading strategy could be used - read the article in turn - answer the questions
  9. 9. PAGE 5 – SMALL GROUP WORK In groups of 6: - Each pair should adopt a reading strategy to cover ONE of the three exercises - Share your findings with your group
  10. 10. LEISURE & SPORT IN BRITAIN (PG. 6) In groups of 6: -Predict what could be contained in the article - Read the article in turn - Go over key vocabulary - Answer exercise 5 and 6
  11. 11. YOUNG PEOPLE IN BRITAIN -Read the article on page 7 -Fill out the chart on page 6 -Answer the questions in exercise 8 -Which reading strategies did you use?
