  2. 2. INTRODUCTION <ul><ul><ul><li>Tanzania Online is a gateway to information on development issues in Tanzania </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>It is a UNDP/UN, Government of Tanzania and Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) initiative </li></ul></ul></ul>

What is the problem? <ul><li>A lot of information is produced but not accessed </li></ul><ul><li>Problem of accessing Research and key documents </li></ul><ul><li>Lack of willingness to share information, more especially on electronic format </li></ul><ul><ul><li>During the preparation of TAS the need for Information coordination was felt </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The UN Office came up with the idea of Tanzania Online and offered funding. </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>ESRF was selected as the implementing agency. </li></ul></ul>

OBJECTIVES <ul><li>To provide an interactive facility for easy access to a comprehensive set of documents about development in Tanzania including: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Research findings </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>National policies, strategies and reports </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>analytic work about priorities in development and progress towards poverty reduction and other development targets. </li></ul></ul>

What has been achieved? <ul><li>Tanzania Online has improved access to research and key documents </li></ul><ul><li>Improved sharing and exchange of information among and between: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Key government institutions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Researchers and academicians </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Donor community and the private sector </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Civil society </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>The general public </li></ul></ul>

What has been achieved..cont <ul><li>Increased global access to locally generated documents </li></ul><ul><li>Enhanced knowledge sharing among stakeholders </li></ul><ul><li>More than 8,000 documents are in the database </li></ul><ul><li>More than 15,000 hits are registered daily </li></ul><ul><li>More than 14,000 have subscribed to the database </li></ul><ul><li>Tzonline hosts the National website www.tanzania.go.tz </li></ul>

Who benefit with our services? <ul><li>Tanzania Online focus on content is National but usage not limited to Tanzania </li></ul><ul><li>Tanzania online serves the needs of: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Government ministries/ Departments/ Agencies </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Donor community </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Academic and research Institutions </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Individual researchers and consultants </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Private sector and </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Overseas users </li></ul></ul>

INFORMATION DISSEMINATION <ul><li>Free via the Internet at www.tzonline.org any one with internet connection can access and download information in PDF format </li></ul><ul><li>New Postings are e-mailed monthly to more than 14,000 subscribers </li></ul><ul><li>“ Highlights” on key issues that have occurred have been appearing on the home page </li></ul><ul><li>Current Awareness lists are posted to users with no internet and e-mail access </li></ul>
  9. 9. PUBLICITY <ul><li>Several measures have been taken to promote the website </li></ul><ul><ul><li>television and newspapers </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Promotional materials such as T-shirts, Brochures, Stickers, Pens and seasons cards are distributed to various stakeholders </li></ul></ul>

Challenges we face <ul><li>Most of the documents are collected in hard copy, as a result processing them takes longer </li></ul><ul><li>The culture of keeping and volunteering to have documents put online is still not developed. </li></ul><ul><li>Research culture is shifting towards electronic sources but gradually. </li></ul><ul><li>The service has to continue to be supplied on a promotional and public service basis. </li></ul>
