What Does Patriarchy Look Like? What Does Patriarchy Look Like? Presentation Transcript

    • What Does Patriarchy Look Like? Presented By Apostle Dr. Lee Ann B. Marino, Ph.D., D.D.
    • We all know we live in a patriarchal society
    • We all know the foundations of society are based for, by, and around men
    • We likewise know that women have been fighting for many years to gain an equal status in society
    • We speak much of patriarchy…
    • But what does patriarchy look like?
    • Let us look at examples of history’s “macho men” to find out…
    • THE HINDU CODE OF MANU “ In childhood a woman must be subject to her father; in youth to her husband; when her husband is dead, to her sons. A woman must never be free from subjugation.”
    • ARISTOTLE “ The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities – a natural defectiveness.”
    • TERTULLIAN “ Woman is a temple built over a sewer, the gateway to the devil. Woman, you are the devil’s doorway. You should always go in mourning and in rags.”
    • AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO “ Any woman who acts in such a way that she cannot give birth to as many children as she is capable of, makes herself guilty of many murders.”
    • CONFUCIUS “ One hundred women are not worth a single testicle.”
    • JOHN CHRYSOSTOM “ Among all savage beasts, none is found so harmful as woman.”
    • THE COUNCIL OF MACON, 584 Women were declared to be human by one vote according to an all-male council
    • MOHAMMED “ Men are superior to women.”
    • THOMAS AQUINAS “ Woman is defective and accidental…and misbegotten…a male gone awry…the result of some weakness in the (father’s) generative power.”
    • MARTIN LUTHER “ If a woman grows weary and, at last, dies from child bearing, it matters not. Let her die from bearing; she is there to do it.”
    • JOHN KNOX “ Woman in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man, not rule and command him.”
    • SAMUEL BUTLER “ The souls of women are so small that some believe they’ve none at all.”
    • NAPOLEON BONAPARTE “ Nature intended women to be our slaves. They are our property.”
    • JOSEPH SMITH “ Accept this doctrine [polygamy] and allow me to have as many wives as I like, along as they are all virtuous and pure.” (said to his first wife)
    • BRIGHAM YOUNG “ Take a plural wife or two…since this is the surest cure for a shrewdish and recalcitrant female.”
    • ORTHODOX JEWISH MEN PRAY… “ Blessed art thou, O Lord our God and king of the universe, that thou didst not create me a woman.”
    • OSCAR WILDE “ No woman is a genius; women are a decorative sex.”
    • GROVER CLEVELAND “ Sensible and responsible women do not want to vote.”
    • THOMAS EDISON “ Direct thought is not an attribute of femininity. In this, women are now centuries behind men.”
    • BRUCE MCCONKIE “ Woman’s primary place is in the home, where she is to rear children and abide by the righteous council of her husband.”
    • JAMES THURBER “ A woman’s place is in the wrong.”
    • JAMES DOBSON “ My observation is that women are merely waiting for their husbands to assume leadership.”
    • JERRY FALWELL “ I listen to feminists and all these radical gals – most of them are failures. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home.”
    • PAT ROBERTSON “ [Feminism is] a socialist, anti-family, political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians.”
    • BILL MCCARTNEY “ Women readers, submit for the survival of our culture.”
    • PAT BUCHANAN “ The real liberators of American women were not the feminist noise-makers, they were the automobile, the supermarket, the shopping center, the dishwasher, the washer-dryer, the freezer.”
    • POPE BENEDICT XVI “ [Banning women from the priesthood] is necessary in order to protect true doctrine, to safeguard the communion and unity of the church, and to guide consciences of the faithful.”
