    2. • Pick Lower Potassium Foods • Another mineral that is regulated by the kidneys is potassium. Potassium assists in nerve and muscle function including the heart. An excess of potassium can cause the heart to beat irregularly and may even cause it to stop. Foods to avoid which are high in potassium include: bananas, broccoli, chocolate, oranges, potatoes, coffee, cantaloupe, tomatoes, bran products and greens. Foods low in potassium include: apples, beans, rice, cucumbers, grapes, noodles, pears, onions, cereal, cranberries, carrots and bread products.
    3. • Reduce Protein Rich Foods • Protein is vital to the maintenance of muscle and repair of body tissues. However, when the kidneys cannot function properly the breakdown of protein causes an increase in waste products in the bloodstream. People following a renal diet should limit meats, milk products, poultry and eggs. Foods that may be substituted are beans, grains and vegetables.
    4. • Restrict Phosphorous Intake • The mineral phosphorous works in conjunction with calcium to build and maintain bones and assist in nerve and muscle function. When kidneys do not function properly they cannot maintain the proper balance of phosphorous and calcium. Generally phosphorous levels will increase and calcium levels will decrease. Therefore foods containing high levels of phosphorous must be avoided, these include: cheese, sardines, peanut butter, nuts, chicken, beer and ice cream. Instead of these foods people on a renal diet should opt for foods containing less phosphorous such as sherbet, broccoli, non-dairy substitutes and zucchini.
