Max’s Restaurant launches Power Breakfast line
Today, March 19…my two girls , two of their friends and myself ate a sumptuous breakfast at the Katipunan branch of
Max Restaurant. Thanks to Blooey Singson , PR Consultant for Max Restaurant, I got 5 free one day gift passes for my
family. I thought L would never wake up for breakfast but she did. Too bad because I already told her sister M that I
had extra passes for her friends. The thing is I didn’t have an extra pass for my husband. Oh well. A great breakfast on a
Monday for a hectic week ahead . We were greeted at the door by an enthusiastic floor manager who treated us like
royalty. I felt so important. hehe. I forgot to bring my digital camera to take photos so I ended up using my nokia N70
camera.
L and I ordered the classic Tapa Meal.
I read from the press release that the classic Tapa Meal is the 60-year old heirloom recipe of Max’s founder Nanay
Ruby Trota consists of tender beef slices marinated in tapa seasoning with zesty hint of pineapple and served with rice,
two fried eggs and brewed coffee. L enjoyed her Tapa meal but got disappointed that there were no coffee refills. The
coffee was excellent. Max’s specially brewed coffee from Indonesian Arabica and Robusta beans needs a second cup.
Cost of the Tapa Meal is 155 pesos.

Readers have been telling me that the Ilocos Empanada at Katipunan Avenue is better than the Ilocano Empanada at
Tiendesitas. I thought of checking it out to see for myself.
An Ilocos Empanada costs 40 pesos each which is slightly more expensive than the Tiendesitas version .

Over at the Sunday Organic Market
, a stall sells vegetarian “veggie” lumpia and ubod lumpia. Looking at the process, it is actually Chinese Lumpia. For
only 40 pesos, one can choose a mix of both vegetarian and ubod lumpia. I chose a mix of the two. It’s just the way
Chinese Lumpia should be with lots of vegetables and ground peanuts as they sell it in Binondo.

Sunday Organic Market
Aside from the Saturday Market at Salcedo Village Park, there is a Sunday Organic Market along the parking lot of
Paseo de Magallanes , South Superhighway. It started last February 25, 2007. Though not as many stalls as the Salcedo
Community Food Market, there were pretty good number of stalls.
Seen at the market are smoked ham, vegetarian lumpia, suman, laing, cakes, breads, Angus steak, Cebu Lechon, fish,
vegetables, meats, shawarma, plants, herbs, dried fish and lots more. Just view more photos of the Sunday Organic
Market so you will have an idea what to buy at the market.

Okoy or Ukoy Shrimp Patty

as they still have the contract.
My husband (with Ilocano roots), ordered Ukoy (or is it okoy). I always thought that Ukoy is formed like a patty then
deep fried. I was so wrong. Let’s start with the ukoy batter. The batter is composed of galapong (sticky rice with water
proportions), small shrimps, onions, spring onions and salt.
As you can see the batter is quite thin. The cook then pours the batter to the “kawali”
That was surprising. I thought one formed a patty first.

Si Ka Satur
March 20th, 2007
Naalala ko noong mawalan ako ng pinakauna kong trabaho. May tatlong buwan pa lamang akong correspondent

Read the rest of this entry

James Yap at Hope
March 16th, 2007

pagkakataon. Read the rest of this entry »

Read the rest of this entry »

Salamat po
March 1st, 2007
Perfect timing or unlucky coincidence?
The Arroyo administration releases P1.9 billion in coco levy income just in time for the election
campaign.
The coco levy fund plunder case — one of the gaping wounds from martial law still needing closure
— is turning 20 years old this year, not a proud anniversary. The Presidential Commission on Good
Government, which sequestered coco levy assets and has been administering them while the court
cases drag on, may not have wanted anyone to remember the glacial pace of Philippine justice. But
soon after the year turned, the PCGG quietly released an unprecedented document that is now
generating questions. Issued on January 9, 2007, the PCGG resolution, seen below, permits the use of
income from coconut levy shares in San Miguel Corporation.
Mababasa ang buong entry sa Howie Severino’s SideTrip. Read the rest of this entry »

Sana di maulit muli–ang fertilizer scam
February 26th, 2007

Coco-Loka: An I-Witness documentary
February 25th, 2007
Can a small-town boy stop the abuse of big-time funds?
Driven by a monster typhoon’s destruction of his native Marinduque’s coconut lands, a local boy now working for
a major TV network wages a lonely battle for justice.
GMA researcher Ederic Eder’s mother died at sea while delivering his tuition money so he could enroll at UP.
That money came from the sweat of his coconut-farming family.
Now a UP-educated professional, he has been researching for years the fate of coconut levy funds that his family
paid to the government. Millions of farmers paid the same levy, which was allegedly stolen and used by Marcos
cronies to buy companies, including nearly half of the shares in San Miguel Corporation.
Collaborating with I-Witness reporter Howie Severino, Ederic discovers that the government may be getting set to
use nearly two billion pesos from those farmers’ funds for electioneering purposes. Read the rest of this entry »

BMX Flatland Freestyle By Ranmamaru
BMX was huge in the '80s, and almost everyone had a BMX bike.
You'd either be hanging out with your friends at the local bike shop,
jumping ramps, the quarter pipe, or busy practicing freestyle flatland
tricks. Well here's a treat for all your BMXers from back in the day! If
you were into BMX in the '80s, you'd be able to name a few of the
tricks our friend does here. Let's see if you can name them!

Human Rights in Mindanao: A Year of Living Dangerously
In 2006, human rights abuses have victimized not just activists, peasants,
workers and poor Filipinos but those who try to protect them as well. In
Mindanao particularly, this violent campaign that is part of the government’s
counter-insurgency efforts benefits big and foreign business interests.

Davao Today -- News, commentary, analysis, reports from Davao City,... http://www.davaotoday.com/main/
Diwalwal, the gold-rush site in Southern Mindanao, is said to hold billions of
pesos worth of gold -- one of the largest in the world. It is also a land so ridden
with conflict and greed that it convulses with violence every now and then.
Trouble in Paquibato
Paquibato, the hinterland district of Davao City, is a land of perpetual conflict, a
battleground of the small and the powerful, and soldiers and guerillas.
Blood Banana
The workers in the banana plantations in Southern Mindanao are under siege.
According to them, their rights as workers are being violated routinely by
banana companies. Several of them have either been killed or wounded in
attacks that are believed to be linked to their struggle for better wages and
working conditions.
Where Will the Children Go?
The Bagobo- Tagabawas, a tribe in Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur, fear not only
their displacement if an Aboitiz-owned power company succeeded in building a
power plant in Tudaya. Ultimately, their leaders say, the children will pay the
price.

appreciation goes to the panel for considering this blog and to all of you who
visit and take time to read it. Good luck to all the finalists!

There's a new controversy in Intramuros. And it's about the only UNESCO
World Heritage Site in Metro Manila, the San Agustin Church. Do you want
to find out what they plan to construct beside Fr. Blanco's Garden? The
Destination Index
Manila Times column of Rene Martel says it all. Check out Random
Jottings: God and mammon join hands at Intramuros. Philippines
Aguilar, Pangasinan 103
There are actually some inaccuracies in the column. The new seminary Agusan del Norte 98
Alaminos, Pangasinan 36
won't be built in the garden itself. I actually asked Fr. Galende about this via
Albay 78
e-mail and he assured me that the new seminary will be built on the original
Alburquerque, Bohol 41
footprint of the former Second Monastery. I think what many people are
Alcala, Cagayan 88
uncomfortable about is the exterior design since I was told many have Alegria, Cebu 153
opposed it from the very beginning but to no avail. I would have to agree Angat, Bulacan 76
with the observations of Pinoy_ako in the SkyscraperCity Forums. Angeles, Pampanga 9 10 62 147 168 169
Angono, Rizal 133
Apalit, Pampanga 34
I am personally not against the
Argao, Cebu 39
construction of a new seminary. In Bacacay, Albay 78
fact, I am for it especially since we Baclayon, Bohol 41
want to keep Intramuros alive (the Bacolod, Negros Occidental 44 45
Augustinians are the last order that Bacolor, Pampanga 62 148
Bacong, Negros Oriental 43
remain in the walled city). At the
Bagac, Bataan 145
same time there used to be a
Baguio City 7 64 65 152 173 174
structure where the proposed Baliuag, Bulacan 76
seminary will built. However, I am Balingoan, Misamis Oriental 106
also uncomfortable with the Banaue, Ifugao 81 100 151
Basilan 92
exterior design which many argue
Bataan 47 145
is not proper for a UNESCO World Heritage Site like San Agustin.
Batac, Ilocos Norte 12 13
Batangas 18 35 85 114 177
I would be all praises if they built the new seminary as a faithful exterior Batangas City, Batangas 114
restoration of the Second Monastery with up-to-date interiors such as that Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya 100
mock-up of the Augustinian Provincialate built just across the street. It Benguet 174
Binmaley, Pangasinan 36
would even be great if they can rebuild that bridge which used to connect
Bohol 40 41
the two buildings.
Bolinao, Pangasinan 36 37
Boljoon, Cebu 39
On the sports complex issue, it was on the front page of the Manila Bontoc, Mountain Province 81

Today was the last day of our road
Cebu 39 40 84 153
trip. We got up just in time for the
Cebu City 39 40
complimentary breakfast at Villa Clark Field, Pampanga 168 169
Cordillera. Eating at the hotel Corregidor Island 47 153
restaurant Le Terrace is always a Dagupan, Pangasinan 31
Daraga, Albay 78
great experience since the
Davao City 104 105
panoramic view of the pine
Davao del Sur 104 105
tree-covered hill behind the hotel is Dumaguete, Negros Oriental 43
very relaxing to the senses. After Dupax del Sur, Nueva Vizcaya 100
paying our hotel bill, we were off to Echague, Isabela 110
Gattaran, Cagayan 88
La Trinidad's strawberry fields.

Baguio's hidden secrets, a Chinese Ifugao 81 100 151

temple called Bell Church. Not
Ilagan, Isabela 88
many people know about it since
Ilocos Norte 12 13
it's quite far from all the other city Ilocos Sur 12
attractions. And today, it is easily Iloilo 44 70 150
obscured by all the urban chaos Iloilo City 44 70 150
Impasug-Ong, Bukidnon 106
that sadly accumulated along the
Isabela 87 88 110
way to La Trinidad. We decided to stopover for a few minutes to check it
Isabela City, Basilan 92
out.
Jasaan, Misamis Oriental 106
Jones, Isabela 110
It's my second time to visit the Kiangan, Ifugao 100
strawberry fields in two weeks. La Trinidad, Benguet 174
La Union 12
Picking strawberries was a bit
Lal-lo, Cagayan 88
cheaper this time around at
Lagawe, Ifugao 81
PHP150 a kilo. The price of those Lagonoy, Camarines Sur 79
sold by the vendors was the same Laguna 8 35 68 69 178 179
too and I got several kilos of Lamitan, Basilan 92
Laoag, Ilocos Norte 13
strawberries for PHP70 each. We
Larena, Siquijor 42
had lunch at Kalei's. The place and
Lazi, Siquijor 42
ambiance is much better that
Legazpi, Albay 78
where Jolly Yan is located. And the food, just as affordable with its "meat Libon, Albay 78
plus meat" at PHP50. But I still think the home-cooked meals of Jolly Yan Ligao, Albay 78
are worth the visit. Lingayen, Pangasinan 19 36 103
Lipa City, Batangas 35 85
Loay, Bohol 41
After lunch, we left Doc
Loboc, Bohol 41
Ryan in La Trinidad and Loon, Bohol 40
began our trip back to Lubao, Pampanga 77
Metro Manila via Kennon Lucban, Quezon 8 69

Road. For most people,
Mabalacat, Pampanga 10 62
since the trip back to

on driving as fast as they Majayjay, Laguna 8 69
Malaybalay, Bukidnon 106
could down Kennon Road.
Malilipot, Albay 78
And as a result, we rarely
Malinao, Albay 78
notice the scenery along the Mambajao, Camiguin 107 108
route. I'm sure we've all Manaoag, Pangasinan 31
seen the waterfalls along Manila 14 15 16 28 29 33 66 71 72 74 75 77 89
the route. But have you 90 129 143 146 149 152 153 170 171 172 176

ever stopped to check them

Maribojoc, Bohol 40
Bridal Veil Falls actually Mariveles, Bataan 47
caught our fancy since Masantol, Pampanga 34
Masinloc, Zambales 38
there was a pedestrian suspension bridge that connected it to Kennon Road.
Metro Manila 14 15 16 28 29 33 66 71 72 74 75
So we parked the car in front of a store and crossed the makeshift bridge.

Below us was a mountain stream that emptied into a vast riverbed further
170 171 172 176 180 181 182
down the road. I guess the falls got its name from the fact that it resembled Miag-ao, Iloilo 44
a bridal veil as the water cascaded down the smoothened rock into a small Misamis Oriental 98 106
pool. Morong, Rizal 179
Mountain Province 81
Naga, Camarines Sur 79
I really think that the entire length of
Naga, Cebu 39
Kennon Road should be declared a protected Nagcarlan, Laguna 8 69
cultural landscape because most of the Negros Oriental 43
scenic route - the picturesque view of the Negros Occidental 44 45

Nueva Ecija 110
is still intact. There is a need to regulate the

Oas, Albay 78
protect the historical fabric of our country's Olongapo City 38

before it's too late.

Palawan 152 154
Anyway, we finally crossed the Pampanga 9 10 34 62 63 77 82 83 94 102 113
Benguet-La Union boundary and 130 131 145 152 168 169
just a few kilometers away, the Pangasinan 7 19 31 36 37 38 103
Panglao, Bohol 41
boundary of Pangasinan. I had to
Paoay, Ilocos Norte 13
pass by Rosales for a while to talk
Penablanca, Cagayan 87
with the mayor. I was pleasantly Pila, Laguna 68
surprised that the restoration of Polangui, Albay 78
the old municipal hall was finally Porac, Pampanga 130 145
Pulilan, Bulacan 76
complete. Unlike other towns such
Quezon City 165 182
as Moncada, Tarlac which
Quezon Province 8 35 69
bastardized their elegant colonial-era town halls, Rosales chose to preserve
Ramon, Isabela 87
theirs. In fact, even the pre-war statues of a farmer on a carabao with his Rizal 133 179
wife were rehabilitated and repainted, bringing out the vivid colors that Sabangan, Ilocos Sur 12
were very chic during the pre-war days. Sagada, Mountain Province 65
Sagay, Camiguin 108
Sagnay, Camarines Sur 79
Our last stop for the day was the
Santiago, Isabela 110
Isdaan Resaurant in Gerona. This San Agustin, Isabela 110
one is an attraction in itself. I San Carlos, Pangasinan 36
congratulate the owners for such a San Fabian, Pangasinan 7

Driving up north to Pagudpud
Our long drive up north began
yesterday afternoon. We left San
Fernando, Pampanga at about 2
p.m. (it was my grandmother's
birthday celebration so we had
lunch there) and reached San
Fernando, La Union at about 6
p.m. We passed by the Ma-cho
Temple so that Jiajin could see a
local Taoist temple. It was closed
when we got there so we were only able to go around the grounds and enjoy
the San Fernando Bay sunset from the place which was high on top of a hill.
From San Fernando, it was another
long drive to Candon, Ilocos Sur
where we had dinner. It is a
popular stopover because of its
local calamay, which are flat like
pancakes and covered with a clear
celophane. There are two kinds,
one made with brown sugar and
the other with white sugar.
Another product sold there is the
Ilocos chichacorn.
It took another 45 minutes or so before we
finally arrived in Vigan where we decided to
stay for the night. Hotels in the heritage area
are quite pricey. But after walking around,
we found the Vigan Hotel which offered
air-conditioned rooms for PHP795 a night,
breakfast for two included. The only hitch

Our next stop was the town of Magsingal. It's church, the San Guillermo
Church, is a national cutlural treasure. It has a very intricately-carved gold
and green retablo. Outside, you could see the ruins of an older church
whose bell tower is still standing. This explains why the church belfry is a bit
far from the current church since they din't bother to construct a new one.
Beside the belfry is a small chapel that was converted into a branch of the
National Museum. There was a blackout that day in the Ilocos area so we
didn't get to see what was inside.

the Marcos Mausoleum among

According to the National
Committee on Geological Sciences
(NCGS) which makes the declarations, "Though common in desert
environments in the higher latitudes, the sand dunes of Ilocos Norte stands
out as a unique land form in the Philippine setting. The dunes cover an
area of about 85 sq kms, and stretch for at least 40 kms. Along the coast,
sparse vegetation consisting mainly of grasses and shrubs blanket the
low-relief area which is believed to have been formed a few thousand years
ago through the combined action of wind, waves and shore currents."
A good place to view them are in the Suba Beach area. But the marker
installed by the NCGS can be found near Fort Ilocandia in Laoag City. In
some places, it really feels like you are in a desert. It would have been fun if
we had some off-road bikes to explore the sand dunes. Maybe next time.
We made a brief stopover in Laoag to have my car tuned-up and then we
were off to Pagudpud. Since we wanted to get there before dark, we had
14 of 22 3/24/2007 3:56 PM

skipped several great stopvers today and reserved them for our trip back.
But we made sure to pass by the Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Burgos,
another national cultural treasure, and the viewing area for the Bangui
Bay Wind Power Project.
The wind farm project in Bangui
Bay, composed of 15 towers, is the
first in the Philippines and the
largest energy-generating set of
wind turbines in Southeast Asia.
It was close to 5 p.m. when we
arrived in Pagudpud. To make sure
we got value for money, we
stopped by the municipal hall to
ask the tourism officer to recommend a place. He sent us to the Polaris
Beach House which was right beside the Municipal Beach Park or White
Beach.
Although the published rate was
PHP1500 a room, since there were
just two of us, we got the
air-conditioned room just for
PHP800. I was told that during the
peak season, a room for two in the
said resort could go as high as
PHP2000. So I could imagine how
much it would cost in other resorts.
It was a good choice since the
facilities were good and I personally liked the place relative to the amount
we paid for it.
The rest of the afternoon was spent
at the beach watching the sunset. It
was a bit chilly for a swim but not
too cold for us to avoid the water.
Dinner was at the resort as well.
We got a big plate of adobo good
for 2 to 3 persons for PHP200. A
bit pricey but what do you expect?
We're off to Baguio City tomorrow.
The plan is to leave early since we'll be stopping over at some of the places
we missed on the way up.

Flavors of Metro Manila's streets
Just as I was bloghopping, I found this post of Sidney Snoeck on street
food which was timely since I had been planning to blog about the street
food we ate the past few days. As he puts it, "food is a window into culture."
15 of 22 3/24/2007 3:56 PM
Ivan About Town http://ivanhenares.blogspot.com/
So here is a sampling of some of the tried and tested street food outlets.
When Jiajin arrived, we went straight to UP Diliman. Our other delegation
members had class that day while I had some business to attend to. And
since we were there, the best thing to do of course was eat since the UP
campus in Diliman is a haven for street food.
We went straight to Mang Larry's
isawan in front of the Kalayaan
Residence Hall. Since I was a
resident there for a year when I
was a freshman, I saw that stand
everyday. And that's how I became
a fan of isaw. Aside from pork
barbeque, the selections of grilled
chicken and pork innards,
collectively referred to as isaw,
include isaw baboy (pork intestine), isaw manok (chicken intestine), tenga
ng baboy (pig's ears), goto, botsi, atay (chicken liver), balun-balunan
(chicken gizzard), and betamax (pig's blood) among others.
There is another isawan that used to be in front of Ilang-ilang Residence
Hall but moved to vacant lot beside the UP Law Center. The main difference
is in the sauce since Mang Larry has a sweet brown sauce and spicy vinegar
while the other is mostly vinegar-based.
Other selections in UP include the sorbetes, taho, lumpia, banana cue,
camote cue, cheese sticks, fish balls, squid balls and kikiam among others.
Good thing there was a sorbetes vendor nearby and we got some avocado ice
cream. For dinner, we had sisig and rice, and a serving of halo-halo at a
street food center in Park 9 along Katipunan.
I've been trying to find hawker centers here in the Philippines just like
those in Singapore and Malaysia. And the closest thing we've got is
Market! Market! in Fort Bonifacio Global City, just along C5. So after our
visit to the Manila American Cemetery, we went straight there.
First thing which caught my eye was the Ilocos empanda stand. We had one
16 of 22 3/24/2007 3:56 PM
Ivan About Town http://ivanhenares.blogspot.com/
each but not too much since we were going to Ilocos anyway to savor the
real thing in Batac. Then we had tokneneng (battered, deep-fried quail
eggs). The stand also sold day-old chicks and quek quek (battered,
deep-fried chicken eggs). I think there was also balut and penoy
(hard-boiled duck eggs with and without fetus respectively).
Another stand sold street drinks such as sago't gulaman and buko juice.
Shawarma may not be Filipino but it has become a popular local snack that
has been Filipinized by adding cheese and sometimes, french fries in it.
Then there's the puto bumbong ang bibingka, and turon among many more
sweet snacks. The selections there are endless which makes it our local
version of a hawker center.
Anyway, there's more food as we go up north.

War memorial in Metro Manila
20 of 22 3/24/2007 3:56 PM
Ivan About Town http://ivanhenares.blogspot.com/
Since we got home quite late yesterday, I decided to go somewhere nearby
today. A lot of people do not know that there is an impressive Second World
War memorial near Makati Central Business District.
According to the American
Battle Monuments
Commission, "The Manila
American Cemetery and Memorial
in the Philippines occupies 152
acres on a prominent plateau,
visible at a distance from the east,
south and west. It contains the
largest number of graves of our
military dead of World War II, a
total of 17,202, most of whom lost their lives in operations in New Guinea
and the Philippines. The headstones are aligned in 11 plots forming a
generally circular pattern, set among masses of a wide variety of tropical
trees and shrubbery.
"The chapel, a white masonry building
enriched with sculpture and mosaic, stands
near the center of the cemetery. In front of it
on a wide terrace are two large hemicycles.
Twenty-five mosaic maps recall the
achievements of the American armed forces
in the Pacific, China, India and Burma. On
rectangular Trani limestone piers within
the hemicycles are inscribed the Tablets of
the Missing containing 36,285 names.
Rosettes mark the names of those since
recovered and identified. Carved in the
floors are the seals of the American states
and its territories. From the memorial and other points within the
cemetery there are impressive views over the lowlands to Laguna de Bay
and towards the distant mountains."
Designed by Gardener A. Dailey of San
Francisco, the cemetery and memorial is
located in the Fort Bonifacio Global City,
Taguig City and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
everyday except on December 25 and
January 1. To read more about the place,
download the brochure here.
I hope the Libingan ng mga Bayani was as
elegantly designed and lay-outed as this one.
The grounds are well-maintained and the
grass is perfectly green even during the
summer!

The paella was a favorite.
I liked everything he served - the unique sushi creations, the tasty quail I devoured to the bone, the
aromatic seafood paella with huge fresh prawns and mussels, and the custard dessert that was dressed
up to look like a serving of raclette. It was a very pleasant afternoon of slow eating and long leisurely
conversations, followed by Claude showing us around the house that took him 10 years to design and
build himself. Before you leave you can purchase a copy of his book Food Tour: A Culinary Journal
(also available for P550 in your local bookstore), as well as bottles of sinamak, pesto, balaw balaw.
We were on the road by 5pm, with a few more stops on the way home:
Susie's for tibok-tibok or cooked carabao's milk with lemon rind, and other kakanin
Rosing's for candies; Claude had served some of her candies in his house so I grabbed a few
boxes when I spotted the store
Margarita Station, which looks like it forgot that we're not in the 80s anymore, for jumbo fruity
cocktails and weary old American soldiers by the bar

Margarita Station is the bar that time forgot.
And we finally arrived in Manila by 930pm, tired, with tummies full. And a bit of a headache from
watching two and a half hours of this awful TV show Point Pleasant that was playing on the coaster's
DVD player.

Good Earth Roasts in Rockwell, Makati

I blinked and almost missed it ... I hadn't been to Rockwell in a while so I was surprised when I went
there last week to find a whole structure of new restaurants had risen right outside the Power Plant
mall housing branches of Pancake House, UCC Cafe, Cantinetta, Starbucks and Good Earth Roasts.
They're building a new residential building (?) where Starbucks and Santis used to be so they relocated
existing restaurants and added a few more new ones a few meters away.
With Good Earth Roasts you can expect cheap drinks, inexpensive eats, and minimal service. It's a
semi-self service set-up with diners having to place their orders and payments in the counter, and the
waiters delivering the food to your table. They have some convoluted system of figuring out which
tables to deliver orders to because they seem to refuse to use a "number" system (i.e. they don't hand
out tabletop numbers so waiters know where things are supposed to be sent).
End result was missing and / or misdelivered orders. I'm not sure if it's because they were new, but
things were a little chaotic when we were there last Friday night. Their listed phone number wasn't
working so I couldn't make a reservation, they weren't issuing receipts (they did give official receipts
upon specific request), and they misplaced their cocktail menu so the lady at the counter would have to
grudgingly (!) dictate their list of available cocktails from memory.
Dodgy service aside, there are things to like about this place. Food and drinks are inexpensive but good
--- P50 for 4 pieces of siomai, P350 for platters of roasted meat, P168 for cocktails that come in a
sizable jars, P30 for beer. And the al fresco setup with stools and little round plastic tables lends itself
to more informal dining in otherwise posh and high-end rockwell (one could probably come here in
shorts and flip-flops and not feel out-of-place).
Good Earth Roasts is at Rockwell, Makati. Call them (if you can) at +632 728 2124.

On Pork
(Apologies to pork lovers!) I read this heart-wrenching
column in the New York Times about the ill treatment given
to pigs that are raised as food. After reading the column, my
brother says he'll be giving up pork for sure. Of course he also
said that when we were driving to Anilao once and saw a
truck with uncomfortably crowded pigs, but ended up with
liempo on his plate come lunch.
I told my mum we should try and reduce our pork
consumption at hmoe, just because my heart bleeds for these
intelligent creatures that spend their lives in misery and
depression. The NY Times columnist writes, "As a cattle
rancher, I am comfortable raising animals for human
consumption, but they should not be made to suffer. Because
we ask the ultimate sacrifice of these creatures, it is incumbent on us to ensure that they have decent
lives. Let us view the elimination of gestation crates as just a small first step in the right direction."
Avoiding pork is not that difficult, I became aware of my pork consumption when I befriended that
didn't eat pork for religious reasons. Every time we'd be out together, I'd make a conscious effort to
avoid pizzas and pasta dishes with sausages, sisig in Filipino restaurants, and chicharon in all its forms.

Why You Comment on Blogs
Freakonomics, one of my favorite blogs, posted a question to their readers yesterday --- if they get tens
of thousands of readers a month why don't more of them comment? I feel the same way sometimes. I
put up this blog mostly for my friends and family, but have met some other amazingly interesting
people with similar interests along the last four years. But I do wonder, if my stats show that I get
thousands of unique hits a month, why do I get only a dozen or so folks leaving me comments? The
folks at Freakonomics have the following to say on blogs and commenters:
1. A great many of you don’t want to comment unless you have something original and
worthwhile to say.
2. Some of you said that you tend to comment on blogs where the blogger writes back in the
comments section — which we typically don’t.
3. A lot of you read this blog on Google Reader, e.g., which means you probably don’t even see the
comments.
4. Many of you think that you don’t write or think well enough to comment on a blog like this. I
think you are so wrong.
5. Above all, I learned that you, the people who read this blog, are amazing!

Paloma, Shangri-la Mall, Mandaluyong
Paloma is a semi-new tapas bar in The Ledge, that row of tiny and always-full restaurants on the 6th
floor of Shangri-la Mall (beside Cyma, Sumo Sam, Tender Bob's). We ordered up a storm, and there
were some hits and some misses. But service was notably quick qnd efficient, something I wouldn't
have expected from such a new restaurant. And they were able to seat us fairly quickly in the middle of
the lunchtime rush.
Loved the paella paloma (!), manchego cheese triangles, gambas al ajillo and caramel cheesecake
(made with real cream cheese).
Didn't really like the cochinillo (too chewy, the horror), boquerones (not fresh and bitey enough), and
churros (too bread-like).
I might visit again if I was already in Shangri-la Mall area (and Cyma was full). But I still prefer Casa
Armas for Spanish food, pricier but more consistent with their quality.

Do Make Say Think
Due to a delivery mix-up I ended up with a free copy of the Lonely Planet's Bluelist --- their list of the
best travel opportunities in 2007 (and it came with a copy of the 2006 Bluelist as well). Lots of great
lists and trends to look out for. The year has been strange though --- no time to read, much less plan a
trip. I've only read one real book this year (quite a sorry track record) ... it was a wonderful book but
much less than the book a week I had envisioned for this year.
Still, it's always nice to plan to plan. After gathering survey forms from 33,000 respondents from 170
countries around the world Lonely Planet came up with the following list of 11 hot destinations for
2007.
Australia
New Zealand
USA
Italy
Thailand
Britain
Canada
France
China

Greece
India
If only the Philippines would show up on these lists one of these days ...this could take a while though
because even local tourists find it difficult to get around the less popular spots in the country.
Personally, I think it would be great if I could visit a new country or two this year. But I'd also be
perfectly happy to just see more of the Philippines, in support of local tourism ... even though holidays
to popular spots like Boracay and Palawan can end up being more expensive than a weekend jaunt to
Hong Kong, Bangkok or Kota Kinabalu. There are a lot of new places I'd like to see this summer:
Donsol, Apo Reef, Bohol.

would require a bit of scuba diving and was a bit more remote --- somewhere I wouldn't normally visit
on a regular day.

On Local Food Magazines: Yummy, Food, Appetite
Yummy Magazine is out on the stands! The entire magazine is every bit as good looking as the preview
paegs on their website suggest. And after going through the first issue, I think it's great that their
recipes are really easy to follow, with step-by-step photos for some recipes. My only beef is that all the
recipes are a little bit TOO easy, with nary a mix of a kitchen challenge. Now allow me to explain that
strange statement --- I don't really have time to cook that often and thus my kitchen experiments are
limited to special occasions when I have time to pore over cookbooks, find recipes from all over, and
spend an entire afternoon in the kitchen. If I'm going to cook, I like to have at least a dish or two that
took some blood, sweat and tears.
Comparing the contents of food magazines out this March:
1. Yummy (Php 95) by Summit - Again, the name is a bit too tweetums for me, but they have a great
eye catching hot pink cover this month. They concentrate mostly on easy-to-do recipes for busy folks.
Overall a nice mix of practical recipes with a sprinkling of interesting food-related features. Among
their articles in this month's issue:
12 of 16 3/24/2007 3:58 PM
rants and raves http://wysgal.blogspot.com/
a few simple recipes from Cibo, Tokyo Cafe, Chocolate Kiss Cafe, Cheesecake Etc, The Coffee
Bean and Tea Leaf
a series of salad recipes
a series of recipes that make good use of garlic
recommended Boracay eats
a listing of fantastic chocolate cakes in Metro Manila
on the Saturday Salcedo Market
2. Food (Php 95) by ABS CBN - I've been a longtime reader of Food, but have always (and still do)
disliked their 80s-style layout, extra large fonts and grainy photos. But I've continued to read them
because there are good recipes from time to time (that make use of locally available ingrendients) and
every now and then I'll stumble across an interesting article. As a general rule I'll buy an issue if they
have a cover recipe that interests me. A sampling of articles in their March issue:
the real deal on caffeine
quicker ways to roast a chicken
preserve summer fruits by turning them into jams
homemade treats for a graduation party
Visayan makeovers of traditional delicacies
a feature on Pattaya (this is one of those articles that make me feel like they wrote about it
simply because some journalists were sent on a media junket, and not really because the article
has anything to do with the rest of the magazine)
Ricky Reyes on throwing parties in his home
a directory of hotel buffets for lunch and dinner
3. Appetite (P125) by Mega Publishing - This is a "lifestyle food magazine" and not really a food
magazine so don't expect too many recipes here. Just loads of articles on all things related to food.
Some good articles, but also lots of stuff I could probably read about in the weekly food sections of the
newspapers. For example:
a list of cookbooks to buy for your lover on Valentine's Day
interview with Sonja Ocampo of Sonja's Cupcakes
recipes from 4 Cantonese chefs for Chinese New Year
interviews with a wakeboarding couple (go figure)
feature on the General Manager of Cebu City's Marriot
a history of noodles
feature on the restaurant Guava in Serendra

Built for Speed, but Looking for Love
I read about this super oven in The New York Times today. Souffles in 2
minutes? Roasted chickens in 14 minutes? An iPod-like click-wheel
panel? I'm thinking it would be a pain to convert conventional recipes
into Turbo-Chef ready masterpieces and it's unlikely they'll be able to
service these in the Philippines ... but my reptilian mind makes me want
one anyway! And for the pretty price of $7,895 you get a Turbo Chef and
regular conventional oven in one.

Healthy Shabu-Shabu, Podium Mandaluyong
I'm not a huge fan of shabu-shabu restaurants because I always hated the way you would smell like a
poorly ventilated kitchen post-meal. But it being resolution season and all (March still counts as the
new year) the "healthy" in Healthy Shabu Shabu's name was calling out to me. We each had our own
hot pot to cook different veggies, meats and fish, and a small bowl of seasoning for the generally bland
cooked bits that would emerge from the broth. The food wasn't great (although of course one could
blame one's own poor cooking skills for that), but experiential dining does has an aspect of fun to it.
Expect to spend P400 to P600 per person. My overall take is that serious shabu-shabu diners are better
off with the probably less healthy but more varied spread of Tong Yang Hotpot and Grill along Jupiter.
Why would anyone pay to eat out, just to end up cooking their food themselves? Who knows, but I
always thought it was fun, and it happens often enough. When my family used to visit Hong Kong every
other year, a favorite was no frills Korean resto Arirang, which enjoyed a short stint as a high-end
establishment in St Francis Square in the 90s. You had your own tabletop grill for cooking raw pieces of
bulgogi, and I must have been too young to care how I smelled after the meal.

PSHS-SMC Graduates on the Bureau of Immigration Watchlist
March 8th, 2007 at 11:50 pm (Human Rights)
A few weeks ago, a graduate of the Philippine Science High School - Southern Mindanao Campus (PSHS -
SMC) was barred from leaving the country. The reason? Apparently, all 819 graduates of the PSHS-SMC are
on the Bureau of Immigration and Deportation (BID) watchlist. Allegedly, this is the school’s way of knowing
if the graduates complied with their contract that they should take a science or engineering course. This is a
clear violation of the graduates’ human rights.
The rationale of possibly “trapping” or “catching” those who have not complied with their contractual
obligation is unacceptable. Why bother all PSHS-SMC graduates with the hassle of procuring a letter from the
school just to lift the travel ban? This is a clear case of assuming guilt. Every PSHS-SMC graduate is assumed
to be guilty of not complying with their contractual obligation unless they clear themselves.
Article III Section 1 of the 1987 Philippine Constitution states that
No person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property without due process of law, nor shall any
person be denied the equal protection of the laws.
Moreover, Section 2 of RA 8239 or the Philippine Passport Act of 1996 reiterates that
“The people’s constitutional right to travel is inviolable…. The right to travel may be impaired
only when national security, public safety, or public health requires.
Thus, it is only imperative that all 819 graduates of the PSHS-SMC be removed from the BI watchlist.
There is currently an online signature drive regarding the matter, please sign here if you are a PSHS-SMC
graduate.

THE 1987 CONSTITUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF THE PHILIPPINES
ARTICLE VI
THE LEGISLATIVE DEPARTMENT
Section 1. The legislative power shall be vested in the Congress of the Philippines which shall consist of a
Senate and a House of Representatives, except to the extent reserved to the people by the provision on
initiative and referendum.
Section 2. The Senate shall be composed of twenty-four Senators who shall be elected at large by the qualified
voters of the Philippines, as may be provided by law.
Section 3.
No person shall be a Senator unless he is a natural-born citizen of the Philippines and, on the day of the

the Philippines for not less than two years immediately preceding the day of the election.
Section 4. The term of office of the Senators shall be six years and shall commence, unless otherwise provided
by law, at noon on the thirtieth day of June next following their election. No Senator shall serve for more than

an interruption in the continuity of his service for the full term of which he was elected.
Section 5. (1) The House of Representatives shall be composed of not more than two hundred and fifty
members, unless otherwise fixed by law, who shall be elected from legislative districts apportioned among the
provinces, cities, and the Metropolitan Manila area in accordance with the number of their respective
inhabitants, and on the basis of a uniform and progressive ratio, and those who, as provided by law, shall be
elected through a party-list system of registered national, regional, and sectoral parties or organizations.
(2)
The party-list representatives shall constitute twenty per centum of the total number of representatives
including those under the party list. For three consecutive terms after the ratification of this
Constitution, one-half of the seats allocated to party-list representatives shall be filled, as provided by
law, by selection or election from the labor, peasant, urban poor, indigenous cultural communities,
women, youth, and such other sectors as may be provided by law, except the religious sector.
(3) Each legislative district shall comprise, as far as practicable, contiguous, compact, and adjacent territory.
Each city with a population of at least two hundred fifty thousand, or each province, shall have at least one
representative.
(4) Within three years following the return of every census, the Congress shall make a reapportionment of
legislative districts based on the standards provided in this section.

Political Ads
January 29th, 2007 at 9:52 pm (General, Media, Election 2007)
This early, TV viewers are already being barraged with stupid, self-glorifying political ads from so-called
“senatoriables”. And it’s goddamn irritating. If these people really did their jobs well, I don’t think they really
have to pay hundreds of thousands of pesos to promote themselves.
Isn’t it illegal to start campaigning when the campaign period hasn’t officially started?

In a few days, the entire country will be barraged with promises, rhetoric and insults. Campaign for local and
senatorial positions will commence, and so will the self-praise and mudslinging. Let us all enjoy these few
days of peace and quiet left before our senses are assaulted with slogans, jingles and ads.

A Troubling Filipino Textbook for College Freshmen
September 8th, 2006 at 7:14 am (General, Education)
I recently had the misfortune of stumbling upon a Filipino Textbook for College Freshmen which endlessly
bothered me. Its title alone, is enough to make you wonder what is happening to the state of our education
system and, more importantly, our national language. The book is entitled “FILIPINO 1 AKADEMIKONG
FILIPINO TUNGO SA EFEKTIV NA KOMUNIKASYON.” On the cover there’s a sign that proudly
boasts that it’s “CHED Compliant.” The authors of the book are Rolando A. Bernales, Glecy A. Atienza,
Vivencio M. Talegon, Jr., Amelita P. Achas, Luvismin D. Danao, Elizabeth A. Joson, Petra s. Ornos, Stanley
G. Rovira, and Tessie s. Suguran.
The book seems to be an English book, only Filipinized. It uses words such as “varayti,” “varyasyon,”
“perspektiv,” “definisyon,” and “morfoloji,” among others. In fact, section 1.5.3 on page 67 is entitled as
“2001 Revisyon ng Alfabeto at Patnubay sa Ispeling ng Wikang Filipino: Mga Tuntunin.” What really
bothered me about the book is how it seems to perpetuate an English-based Filipino language. Yes, times are
changing and language is supposed to be dynamic. But it does not have to be lazy, or lousy.

ended up with hours and hours and hours of footage that we (actually, I)
had to sift through and sort out and trim into a ten minute documentary with
a coherent story. Whew, we pulled it off nonetheless. I’ll upload the
documentary in a few days.

After our small salu-salo in Mass Comm, we proceeded to Vinzons Hall to
join other STAND-UP members for the university-wide party’s
post-election gathering. The party’s local chapters each had a presentation.
We in STAND-UP CMC sang our election theme song. And suddenly, I am
reminded of the night we spent at Marian’s place rehearsing Carlos’ and
Tiffie’s composition which ultimately became our local party song. After
the gathering in Vinzons, some of us proceeded to a pseudo-evening pool
party hosted by Yani somewhere along Timog Avenue.
I miss my slate and our afternoon and evening sessions, and overnight
sleepovers.

Re-orient me please
Posted on 03.16.07 by Bikoy @ 9:53 am
I still feel disoriented. For the past month or so, my routine has been
irregular, what with my neophyte phase, and then the weeks-long election
season. Now, everything seems weird to me. No more student council
work, no more ‘initiation sessions’, no more elections. Everything’s ‘back
to normal’ and yet I’m still heavily hung up from all the irregularities that
have happened. I’m not even used to being online all the time anymore.
I’ve been trying and I’ve been getting back into my ‘old routine’ the past
days. There’s just less than two weeks of school days left however, so it’s
not really getting back to a regular routine because these weeks are hell
weeks. It also doesn’t help that I’ve given up and missed a lot of things,
most are academic, the past month because of my extra-curricular and
political preoccupations.
Last Monday, I was able to attend assemblies of my two orgs in Mass
Comm. My attendance reminds me that I have to reorient myself with the
busy org life I once had in my first and second year in college. Those were
preoccupations I felt fulfillment and happiness in (eghck, but true). [Photos

Last Wednesday, I attended one of UP MCO’s regular entertainment quiz
shows at the college’s parking lot. This one’s focused on Korean
entertainment trivia. I wasn’t able to take part much, if at all, with the
planning and preparations, so I simply tried to make up for it by taking part
in documenting the event. [Photos are here]

Nevertheless, right now I still feel weird. I shouldn’t let myself be left
alone. I should leave the house in a while and find someone to hang out
with in school.

Last last weekend, my Film 114 groupmates and I shot our final project for

Posted on 03.13.07 by Bikoy @ 10:23 am
I’ve been feeling quite disoriented and lost the past few days after losing
the elections. I’m not depressed, really. I just never realized how lost it
would make me feel.
See, for the past three years, I’ve gotten myself very busy with org work
and student council activities. First year pa lang, I joined two organizations
in Mass Comm and immersed myself in org life. The next year, I became an
officer in both orgs. The next year, I got myself into the college’s student
council. Now, I feel lost in a college I’m so attached to. I don’t know what
to do now. I’m unsure what role I’ll play. I know there will be things in
store for me. Perhaps I just didn’t prepare myself well enough about the
prospect of losing that’s why I’m currently disoriented. Perhaps it’s time

for me to go back to my orgs and my friends whom I’ve missed very much,
and/or get myself busy with non-election STAND-UP work, and/or simply
immerse myself in academic stuff and go home after my classes (LOL). I
don’t know. Come what may.
By the way, I honestly wasn’t expecting the flood of comments my past

Don’t worry guys, I’m okay. I simply don’t have enough time to blog these
days or even show up often in Mass Comm, for reasons I might tell some
other time. I’ll write my realizations and other such catharsis this weekend.
I would like to congratulate my co-candidates in STAND-UP, seven of
whom won in the CMC Student Council elections. Martha Teodoro as
Vice-Chairperson, Marian Santos as Treasurer, Ruth Miguel as Broadcast
Communication Representative. Airah Cadiogan as Communication
Research Representative, Tope Canela as Film Representative, and Jem
Garcia & Carlos Maningat as Journalism Representatives. I will really
miss working with you guys. I’m sure you’ll all do well.
Thank you to all who supported STAND-UP and our candidates in Mass
Comm, to friends and supporters who have been present before and after
the elections. I sincerely appreciate all the love and support.

Campaign period is almost over. In a way, it will be a relief. But I will
surely miss all the stressful days and nights I spent with my co-candidates
in STAND-UP CMC. It will be a great privilege and pleasure to work with
them in the student council, if ever we get elected. I’m obviously and
honestly hoping that we all do.
We spent the entire weekend before the campaign period (that’s two weeks
ago) at our house, training and drafting our detailed general program of
action. Then every afternoon till evening of every campaign day, we all sit
down together and assess and talk about all sorts of stuff. It’s an everyday
bonding thing. Last weekend, we slept over at Marian’s place in
Guadalupe, Makati. It was a whole day till almost-dawn training slash
bonding session. The slate also spent the entire night till morning before the
college miting de avance at our house.
I will also miss working with our campaign managers, field operators and
other campaign team members. Thank you, thank you.

Hindi ka nag-iisa
Posted on 02.28.07 by Bikoy @ 10:29 pm
There are just a few campaign days left, and I’m honestly looking forward
to election day, as we can all stop this exhausting endeavor of convincing
people to vote for you and your party against a full slate opposition.
Last Monday, as the two aspirants for chairperson in Mass Comm, Karol
and I were interviewed together over DZUP. He was as jolly as he usually
is. It’s laughable how some people seriously pit us against each other. We
never had bad moments with each other even as members of the incumbent
student council, even when we were debating on our positions regarding
the tuition increase proposal a few months ago. All’s well (or so I’d like to
believe).
Anyway, as the program progressed, one of the main differences between
Karol and I are exposed. As expected, Karol and his party, ISA, finally
admits that they are for tuition fee increase, while we in STAND-UP are,
from the beginning, against its approval. To people who’ve been asking
what’s the different between the two parties, perhaps that can serve as a
factor on how they will decide next Tuesday. Are we not afraid of losing
votes because of our position? Honestly, no. This is our stand, and we are
being honest and unpretentious about it. We lay out all our cards in
campaign, and if a fellow Mass Comm student firmly believes otherwise,
then due respect is given. We will not compromise these positions during
election campaign to simply garner votes.

Many of the STAND-UP candidates in the student council elections,
including Mikas and I, went to the youth sector mobilization yesterday. It
was a demonstration similar to the youth sector rally a few weeks ago. This
rally was scheduled towards the end of February because it is during these
times when school administrations across the country conduct
‘consultations’ regarding tuition hikes for the next academic year.
This time there were also more representatives from different schools and
universities across Metro Manila from the University of the East in Manila
and Caloocan, University of Santo Tomas, Far Eastern University, Centro
Escolar University, University of the Philippines in Manila and Diliman,
De La Salle Araneta University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Philippine
Christian University, Philippine Normal University and Polytechnic
University of the Philippines.

I am unsure how many UP Mass Comm students get to see this but that was
obviously a small gesture of campaigning. Just as we’ve been harping in all
our room to room campaigns, we do not view the issues and struggles in
our college as isolated problems that we can solve by patchworking or by
socialized tuition hikes. We view and try to solve them in congruence and
as part of a larger education situation in the country.

There are relatively few classes and students in Mass Comm during
Wednesdays, which makes it a small breather among the days of the week
in campaign. I nevertheless did not campaign in the morning because my
groupmates in documentary film class and I went to Sampaloc, Manila to
shoot footages for our documentary.
Along Gen. Geronimo St., in Sampaloc is a long row and community of
cardboard and umbrella shanties. The community is called ‘Maisan’
because many of the residents of the community are ambulant vendors of
corn who sell them in various streets in different parts of Metro Manila.
13 of 15 3/24/2007 3:59 PM

The setting and its novelty is not really the main subject of our
documentary, but the problems and struggles of the community and its
individual residents in the context of a larger national problem and in the
context of an upcoming national elections. Wah, ang lalim, and admittedly
medyo gasgas na. Let’s see what we can come up with our footage.
I had to go back to UP that afternoon to attend our slate’s photo shoot and
also, to campaign in the afternoon classes.

To another week of campaign
Posted on 02.23.07 by Bikoy @ 12:23 am
I’m overwhelmed sometimes. Running during last year’s Mass Comm
student council elections wasn’t this hectic. Most of us in the slate,
including Marella and I for Film Department Representatives, were running
unopposed. There was very little pressure that time. This year is a lot
different. Our party is running with a full-slate opposition, which as I’ve
mentioned in a previous entry, is similarly determined to win the elections.
[These pictures were taken from our makeshift campaign booth during the afternoon
of the first day of campaign period]
I actually just got home a few hours ago from a mini-mudslinging training
workshop. My next class is in seven hours. I still have a term paper to write
and a Spanish dialogue to memorize. And I haven’t slept. I need something
(or someone) to keep me going.
I know I’m not supposed to show weaknesses during campaign. I don’t
actually know how many students from Mass Comm read my blog, but…
admittedly and with all humility, nakakapagod talaga ‘to. Sometimes I want
to recluse and recollect myself before facing fellow students and subjecting
myself to their scrutiny. Sometimes I don’t want to smile anymore because
I’m exhausted, but I have to because individuals really do vote partly on
personalities and packaging. I simply want to impart what we want to do as
a party and as individuals, it sucks that we have to be partly ‘trapo’ in order
to convince everyone that we are actually sincere in our platform and other
such objectives. And if that is what it takes, then we shall continue doing
this. Here’s to another week of campaigning!

Ericsson SI Campus Batch 2007
Posted by Fritz @ 07:18 PM
We just came from 6 days of SI Campus training. It was like living inside Big Brother’s House. We worked, studied,
lived and had fun within the confines of the campus.
It was very challenging as we had to work/study even until 2AM for some of the case studies. But at the end of the
training, it was all worth it.
Here we are ready to face our challenges both in work and life!

Jing Gong (JG) M4 S-System
Posted by Fritz @ 07:22 PM
My colleagues in Ericsson and I bought new guns… The Jing Gong (JG) M4 S-System!
The estimated out-of-the-box FPS is 415-420FPS. When my colleagues did a chrono on their newly bought guns, it
registered 418FPS on average while some guns even went up to 480FPS.
I wasn’t able to chrono my own gun since I was in a hurry to leave. But they estimated mine to be roughly around
418FPS as well.

I did some target shooting on the rooftop of my pad and I was really surprised. The sound was similar to high-end
AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns).
The trajectory was not impressive at first rounds of bullets. It was scattered with BBs flying all around. However,
after several rounds (Approx. 800 bullets) and a few adjustments on the hop-up, the trajectory and target spread
became quite impressive. It had around 3-4 inches diameter target spread on a 20~25 meters distance. This was quite
normal for new AEGs as the hop-up and the silicone oil was also adjusting.
This gun is so much heavier than my trusty Jing Gong (JG) A47-Beta Spetsnaz (Ak-47). The M4 S-System has metal
rail system as part of stock.
I like the M4 S-System for our usual Jungle Scenarios. However, for CQB scenarios, I won’t be able to use the M4
S-System as it might fail the bottom-can test and bore a hole on the can. I will need to use my Spetsnaz. It only dents

the bottom of the soda can.
Overall, I’m very satisfied with my new M4 S-System. However, I’ll update this post once I get to use it in combat
this Saturday.

Way Back Into Love by Hugh Grant & Haley Bennett
I’ve been living with a shadow overhead
I’ve been sleeping with a cloud above my bed
I’ve been lonely for so long
Trapped in the past, I just can’t seem to move on
I’ve been hiding all my hopes and dreams away
Just in case I ever need ‘em again someday
I’ve been setting aside time
To clear a little space in the corners of my mind
All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can’t make it through without a way back into love
I’ve been watching but the stars refuse to shine
I’ve been searching but I just don’t see the signs
I know that it’s out there
There’s got to be something for my soul somewhere
I’ve been looking for someone to shed some light
Not somebody just to get me through the night
I could use some direction
And I’m open to your suggestions
All I want to do is find a way back into love
I can’t make it through without a way back into love
And if I open my heart again
I guess I’m hoping you’ll be there for me in the end
There are moments when I don’t know if it’s real
Or if anybody feels the way I feel
I need inspiration
Not just another negotiation

Jing Gong (JG) A47-Beta Spetsnaz (AK47)
Posted by Fritz @ 04:46 PM
I bought my Spetsnaz a couple of days after my first game of airsoft. I can’t help it. It’s so addicting.
I only bought a JG so that the price won’t be too high. I plan to upgrade it anyway.
And last week, I upgraded my spetsnaz to SP120. I was planning on SP130 but the store highly discouraged it. Now
as I was upgrading the gearbox, the spring guide suddenly flew out of my hand. As I picked it up, I noticed, the
important piece of the spring guide was cracked. Thus, I had to purchase a new spring guide. But it was worth it, the
new spring guide was metal and had bearing support.
Now I have bought a new customized set of batteries. I never thought I’d customize batteries. But I did so it would
fit my gun. Man, the rate of fire and the distance of the bullet was amazing!

Airsoft Team Ericsson
Posted by fritz-mobile @ 01:25 PM
Ericsson just came from a grueling game of airsoft. I was there to try the game before I buy my own equipment. We
were oblivious to the hot sun as we wore thick clothing to protect ourselves.
In my first game, I took out 1 enemy while the rest of my team took out the other enemies! But in my second game, I
was hit while trying to be invincible and I charged the bunker of the enemy head-on! Nevertheless, it was all worth
it! It was fun! There was team work and cooperation from everyone!
Thank you to Peter and Carlo for lending me their gear! It was a great experience!
Go Team Ericsson!

Lumipas mga araw na ubod ng saya

Kung ako’y nagkasala, patawad na sana
Puso kong pagal ng ngayon lang nagmahal

Luther Vandross - Dance With My Father

Thanks Dad for always being there for me!
Dance With My Father by Luther Vandross
Back when I was a child, before life removed all the innocence
My father would lift me high and dance with my mother and me and then
Spin me around ‘til I fell asleep
Then up the stairs he would carry me
And I knew for sure I was loved
If I could get another chance, another walk, another dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
How I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
When I and my mother would disagree
To get my way, I would run from her to him
He’d make me laugh just to comfort me
Then finally make me do just what my mama said
Later that night when I was asleep
He left a dollar under my sheet
Never dreamt that he would be gone from me
If I could steal one final glance, one final step, one final dance with him
I’d play a song that would never, ever end
‘Cause I’d love, love, love
To dance with my father again
Sometimes I’d listen outside her door
And I’d hear how my mother cried for him
I pray for her even more than me
I pray for her even more than me
I know I’m praying for much too much
But could you send back the only man she loved
I know you don’t do it usually
But dear Lord she’s dying
To dance with my father again
Every night I fall asleep and this is all I ever dream

Hinder - Lips Of An Angel
Posted by Fritz @ 08:26 AM
This is quite an emotional song about a past relationship. And despite their separation, they have kept their
communication.
You know who you are. I’ll always be here even when you call late at night. Hehe!
Nice album. Sounds like Nickelback. Oh and I just like the chick on the cover. That’s it!
Lips Of An Angel by Hinder
Honey why you calling me so late?
It’s kinda hard to talk right now.
Honey why are you crying? Is everything okay?
I gotta whisper ’cause I can’t be too loud
Well, my girl’s in the next room
Sometimes I wish she was you
I guess we never really moved on
It’s really good to hear your voice say my name
It sounds so sweet
Coming from the lips of an angel
Hearing those words it makes me weak
And I never wanna say goodbye
But girl you make it hard to be faithful
With the lips of an angel
It’s funny that you’re calling me tonight
And, yes, I’ve dreamt of you too
And does he know you’re talking to me
Will it start a fight
No I don’t think she has a clue
Well, my girl’s in the next room

Eric Benet - The Last Time
Posted by Fritz @ 07:50 AM
I think it was 3 nights ago that I went mucking to my friends about me not getting married yet. I’ll be going over the
monthly calender in a couple of years and I wanna get married before that.
And I did that quite late in the evening. Hehehe! Most of them gave very sound advices. However, one friend said,
“$&@*$# You’re just sleepy dude. Go to bed! ” It takes a real friend to say that to you. Hehehe!
Anyway, I felt quite sad the next night after band practice that my colleagues in Ericsson brought me to Pier 1. They
said, “2 bottles!”. Now where have I heard that before? Hehehe! As the night progressed, more and more ladies went
to Pier 1 to unwind. Then more and more GORGEOUS ladies came to Pier 1.
One of my colleagues jokingly said, “After all the beautiful ladies we’ve met, do you really wanna get married
immediately?” I couldn’t really hear him at that time. I was having a nice conversation with a gorgeous 24-year old. I
forgot my dilemma. She was great. And that was enough for me to forget my angsts and be my usual comical self.

No need to rush things.
Ja matta friends! Thanks for all the advices you’ve given me. Someday I might play this song on my wedding day!
(By the way, I was NEVER married as some of my friends thought! Hehe!)
The Last Time by Eric Benet
The first time I fell in love was long ago
I didn’t know how to give my love at all
The next time I settled for what felt so close
But without romance, you’re never gonna fall
After everything I’ve learned
Now it’s finally my turn
This is the last time I’ll fall… in love
The first time we walked under that starry sky
There was a moment when everything was clear
I didn’t need to ask or even wonder why
Because each question is answered when your near
And I’m wise enough to know when a miracle unfolds
This is the last time I’ll fall… in love
Now don’t hold back, just let me know
Could I be moving much too fast or way too slow
‘Cause all of my life, I’ve waited for this day
To find that once in a lifetime, this is it, I’ll never be the same
You’ll never know what it’s taken me to say these words
And now that I’ve said them, they could never be enough
As far as I can see, there’s only you and only me
This is the last time I’ll fall… in love
Last time I’ll fall in love
The last time I’ll fall… in love

How to Disable the Preview Window in WordPress 2.0.4
Filed under: Studios News, Softwares
Posted by Fritz @ 11:54 AM
I’ve been using WordPress 2.0 for quite some time already since the announcement of the upgrade. However, I’ve
20 of 22 3/24/2007 4:00 PM
mesedilla studios http://www.mesedilla.com/
been so busy that I haven’t given much thought on the features and the admin tools.
Now, if you are also a WordPress 2.0 user, you’d notice that one of the new features is the preview window.
Although it does provide you a sample of your post with all the themes and images of your site, it is somehow a
bandwidth hog.
So if you’re like me who likes to post and perform edits quickly, here’s how to disable the preview window.
Find this block of code in …/wp-admin/post.php. You can find them on lines 82-85.
<div id='preview' class='wrap'>
<h2 id="preview-post"><?php _e('Post Preview (updated when post is saved)'); ?> <small
class="quickjump"><a href="#write-post"><?php _e('edit ↑'); ?></a></small></h2>
<iframe src="<?php echo add_query_arg('preview', 'true', get_permalink($post->ID));
?>" width="100%" height="600" ></iframe>
</div>
Replace the block of code with:
<!-- // disable post preview
<div id='preview' class='wrap'>
<h2 id="preview-post"><?php _e('Post Preview (updated when post is saved)'); ?> <small
class="quickjump"><a href="#write-post"><?php _e('edit ↑'); ?></a></small></h2>
<iframe src="<?php echo add_query_arg('preview', 'true', get_permalink($post->ID));
?>" width="100%" height="600" ></iframe>
</div>
// disable post preview -->
I simply placed the block of code inside comment tags <!–– comments ––>
There you have it. I hope this helps!

Founded in 1584, Passi is now a
chartered city in the Province of
Iloilo. It is authentic that Passi
City had the most colorful people
in the island, the Pintados.
However, the history of the
church could be traced back in
the early 1600’s but the present
church was initiated in
1821-1837. The architectural
style is perhaps undistinguished
but it might be referred as

Juvenile Justice and Privileged Mitigating
Circumstance of Minority
Published by Joselito Basilio March 21st, 2007 in Obiter/News and Sentencing Law. 0 Comments
In our recent final examination in Criminal Law II, the following question was propounded:
1. Where a minor under 18 years but over 9 years, who acted with disce rnment, is charged for an offense defined
and penalized by the RPC which calls for the imposition of a capital penalty, is he entitled to a privilege mitigating
circumstance of minority under Art. 68 of the RPC nothwithstanding the explicit provision of Art. 63? Is he entitled
to the benefits of PD 603?

Withdrawal of exemptions to pay local taxes: The
TELCO cases
Published by Atty. Fred March 19th, 2007 in Tax and Estate Law and Digests. 0 Comments
SC newsflash: SC Holds DIGITEL Accountable to Pangasinan for Local Taxes. The Supreme Court recently found
Digital Telecommunications Philippines, Inc. (DIGITEL) liable to the Province of Pangasinan for the payment of
provincial franchise and real property taxes. The SC affirmed the ruling of the lower court that the tax exemption in
Republic Act (”R.A.”) No. 7925, the “Public Telecommunications Policy Act of the Philippines,” stating that any
advantage, favor, privilege, exemption, or immunity granted under existing franchises, or may hereafter be granted,
shall be made part of previously enacted franchises and made automatically applicable to the grantees thereof, does
not work to exempt DIGITEL from payment of provincial franchise and real property taxes.
Unfortunately, as of this writing, the decision in that case (GR No. 152534, Digital Telecommunications Philippines,
Inc. v. Province of Pangasinan, 23 February 2007) is not yet posted at the SC website. So, let’s discuss the case cited
in that DIGITEL decision - PLDT vs. City of Davao, et al. Continue reading ‘Withdrawal of exemptions to pay local

Last Sunday, while other Manila broadsheets were babbling on
about something or another, only the Manila Times seemed to
focus on a subject that really matters: The Ongoing
Desecration of Intramuros by Ace Barbers. Read the
Manila Times Special Report about the scandalously ugly side of
the Philippine Tourism Authority, a government institution I
believe should have been abolished years ago and it's chair, Dean
Barbers sent back to the poverty stricken province from whence
he came. The article also goes on to question why Ace Durano,
the chair of the PTA, is standing idly by and letting the Dean get
away with the murder of the sancitity of our heritage sites. So far,
the article says the construction has stopped. But really, for how
long?
And aside from illegal structures defacing Intramuros, Mr.
Barbers and the PTA are also responsible for the unsightly (and
unhelpful) green plastic mesh on the golf course that blocks the
view of the walled city, the current "Oceanarium" being built
right behind the Quirino Grandstand (photo below - HELLO!!
PHILIPPINE PRESS. This sea monstrosity is an expose waiting
to happen! Why is there an "Oceanarium" being built right by
our national heroes monument? Hello parking, overcrowding,
animal cruelty and typhoon damage issues!) and tons of other
questionable construction projects around the entire country. All
funded by the Travel Tax that they bleed from us everytime we
leave the country.

Rizal Avenue and the Escolta was Manila's premier shopping
district until the 1970's when the rise of Makati Commercial
Center and the construction of the LRT somewhat diminished
their distinction. Now revitalized through efforts by the local
government, the area has been cleaned up and rehabilitated as a
pedestrian promenade. Most of its mid-20th century historic
charm remains and its still the cheapest place in Manila to buy
shoes, hardware, appliances, clothes, sex gadgets, jewelery,
pearls, beauty queen tiaras, voodoo potions, flowers, handicrafts,
videos, and electronics.

WHEE! WHEE! WHEE!
Well, whaddaya know? Yours truly is mentioned in Lufthansa
Magazine. Not a bad acheivement if I might say so myself. Why
do I say this? Because I met the writer, Hans Oberlaender, when
he was being toured around Manila by the inimitable blue haired
honorary Filipino Andy Maluche, and I know that this was a
writer with incredibly high standards. Every Manila restaurant,
hotel, tour service, and attraction mentioned in his article had to
be Germanically perfect lest any passenger of Lufthansa be
disappointed by any of his recommendations. And although one

in a flash. After features on CNN and in Vanity Fair and New
York Magazine, here goes her High Hairedness in W Magazine
this time. I actually had a quick meeting with Marshall Heyman,
the writer of the article over drinks the Peninsula poolside when
he came to town. And judging from our conversation, I was in
fear that his article would make a mockery of the country and our
choice of leaders in the same way that many other journalists
have when writing about Imelda and her position in Philippine
history. I was pleasantly surprised to find it to be rather
balanced. Most of the crazy stuff written was not from his pen but
from her own mouth. I'm also amazed how nice the article is
about her when she really drove his patience and nerves to
breaking point. Not to mention that he was also being very
diplomatic about her collection of jewelry. Read the article on
style.com here and to come to my Imelda Tour of the CCP
Complex here.
And thank you Kiko for the great review!

KVETCH! KVETCH! KVETCH!
I don't know where to begin about how upset I am about what is
going on in downtown Manila and Intramuros. I heard that the
year of the Pig is all about change, but these changes I see are all
happening way too fast for me to handle. It truly breaks my heart
to see centuries old heritage sites being altered without proper
planning and long revered establishments close down to make
way for brash commercialism and badly designed real estate
projects. Here are a few of those alarming changes that I have to
adjust to...

Walk This Way http://celdrantours.blogspot.com/
FATHER BLANCO'S GARDEN
For years I heard that the Order of Saint Augustine had elaborate
plans to construct an seminary/annex to the museum behind
their cloisters in Intramuros, on the site of the former Agustinian
Dormitories which was destroyed in the Battle of Manila back in
1945 (above, right). In the last ten years, several plans were
drawn up, scale models were made, but nothing ever seemed to
go beyond the blueprint stage. Frankly, I thought that
construction would never ever push through at all. Or that
perhaps before doing so, they would first repair the crumbling
bathrooms and rooms of the original museum and rebuild the
bell tower (which was destroyed in the earthquake of 1883)
before venturing into the construction of a new building within
the complex. Apparently I thought wrong. Way wrong.
Just a couple of days ago, while doing my usual spiel about the
American Colonial period in the garden (above), I recieved word
from San Agustine employees that construction would finally
begin at the end of March. Looking around, I also noticed that all
the plants lining the bench area had all been uprooted, the
gardener had been laid off, and the trees marked for cutting
(DENR permit?) in order to begin construction of a two storey
building that does NOT really look like the original structure at
all. This came as horrifying news for me as I now have to find a
new location for the American Colonial period segment of my

Walk This Way http://celdrantours.blogspot.com/
tour. But that aside, I was willing to grin and bear the
inconvenience and transfer my spiel to the upper galleries during
the construction period since the annex would eventually be used
as a restoration workshop, auditorium, and exhibition hall for
San Agustin. Truth be told, I am not one to hinder any project
that would upgrade the facilities of the museum. But
unfortunately that wouldn't be the case either as even the
purpose of the new building has been changed. No longer will the
building be used for cultural purposes but it will now be used by
priests as their domitories and nothing else. I don't know if the
National Historical Institute approved these new changes (or if
they even know what is going on at all). All I know is that the
design needs some major alterations (the glass windows are just
way too big and inappropriate) and the museum should definitely
be given priority. After all, the San Agustin Order has a lot of land
in the province, why don't they build the dormitories out there
where the air is fresher and there is more space? It just doesn't
make sense to me to build a seminary inside the current San
Agustin compound.

The building plans...
This will remain.
But all the trees here will be cut down to make way for the new L
shaped seminary.
23 of 30 3/24/2007 4:01 PM
Walk This Way http://celdrantours.blogspot.com/
But you know what else doesn't make sense to me? These
structures being built next to Fort Santiago. Huge ugly
badminton courts/warehouses being built right on the site of the
former golf driving range. It's too big, it's too close to the walls of
Fort Santiago, and it just ruins the sanctity of the Jose Rizal
Shrine (from where the photo was taken).
And unlike the seminary of Father Blanco's garden (which only
suffers from a bad design and a misdirected purpose), these
structures above are completely ILLEGAL. Built very close to the
walls, this project, worth PHP85M, was pursued despite the
disapproval of the Philippine Tourism Authority Board and a
stoppage order issued by the Intramuros Administration.
Obviously, P.D. 1515 or any adherence to the legal system is
ignored here.
To learn more about the law which protects Intramuros, log on to
this site.
So to all fellow Filipino citizens (and most especially PRESS
PEOPLE), if you wish to do more research on these matters or if
you wish to file a complaint illustrating your disgust with these
issues, shoot out a scathing email to the following folks.

MELDY MOVIES...
IMELDA AND MAO DOWN UNDER AND BIG IN
JAPAN...
Oh wow. It's the anniversary of the EDSA revolution, that week
twenty one years ago when we sent Ferdie and Meldy packing for
that fateful trip to Hawaii. And as a way to commemorate this
occasion, I would like to post these fabulous youtube videos of
Imelda's official visits to Red China, to Australia, and to Japan
where she accepted the Kajima Award for Peace. I viewed these
videos with a mix of kitschy glee and sadness. It seemed like the
Philippines was a country poised for stardom back then, a nation
that rose out of the ashes of World War II to become an
international force to reckon with. Unfortunately, things didn't
work out as well as we had hoped. And furthermore, we invested
way too much into this lady. And since we allowed her and her
butterfly sleeves to define our identity on the world stage, now
that she has become a parody - in a weird way, so have we.
I wonder if we'll ever allow anybody/any icon to ever
represent/define ourselves once again?

SUNDAY AT THE PARK WITH...omg.
While emptying out my camera yesterday, I stumbled upon some
digital shots that I took on a sunny Sunday afternoon last
October. Ah yes, I remember it as if it were only yesterday. It was
such a lovely day indeed. "Lovely enough to go for a walk at
Luneta Park," I thought to myself.
And lo, what do I find lining the perimeter fence of downtown
Manila's largest green space? Why, it's an art exhibition. A series
of paintings done in acrylic housepaint on 8'x10' plywood boards.
"Well done." I thought to myself, "What a lovely complement to
27 of 30 3/24/2007 4:01 PM
Walk This Way http://celdrantours.blogspot.com/
my afternoon constitutional. Art and green spaces. A smashing
combination."
Approaching the aforementioned works of art, I soon realize that
this cultural display was an art contest brought to me by the
progressive minds of the pro-life, anti birth-control people of the
City of Manila and the Catholic Church of the Philippines. Oh joy.
"Wonderful." I mentally squealed. "Of course! Public Art. The
most effective means to bring about social change in the third
world - especially acrylic paintings. How dynamic. How relevant.
It's almost a metaphor for the gallery itself as an institution.
Paintings + Wall = Art. Publicly displayed Paintings + Public
Wall = Public Art. Brilliant!
With such a wealth of creative expression before me, it was
almost a crime to choose a favorite. But after much mulling and
much difficulty (I think they are all winners), I finally chose three
paintings that stood out head and shoulders above the others:
The first is "Skulls in The Uterus" (2006) Artist: Unknown for
now (above). Mmmm. A gorgeous composition done in dramatic
black white, the stark colors symbolizing the pain of living in a
lonely post modern world. The words,"Let them come...Do not
stop them.", written in classic script and slathered across the
bottom imbue a deeper meaning, it's cryptic message fraught
with multiple interpretations. Give this artist a grant.
28 of 30 3/24/2007 4:01 PM
Walk This Way http://celdrantours.blogspot.com/
The next one, "Baby Down the Toilet" (2006) Artist: Unknown
for now as well (above) - is a lovely quasi-abstract masterpiece
that took my breath away. Once again, like in "skulls", color was
used here in order to incite a strong reaction from the viewer. It
was truly a "look at me" kind of painting, if you know what I
mean. In here, the artist's implementation of heightened scale
and allegory harks back to an age when the painted image was
the only means to document history. But all the classical
references here are are now given a contemporary twist through
his/her powerful use of the image of a baby...and a toilet. I look
at this painting and I think of artists like, Da Vinci, Velazquez,
and of course, Bacon. Give this artist two grants.
And the last but definitely not the least, "My Chained Exploding
Vajayjay with Vomiting Baby (The Sonata of the Smiling Devil
Face)" (2006) Artist: Unkown (above). This is a picture so subtle
in it's beauty that I almost shed a tear. Yes. A tear. That's how
moved I was. Centrally composed (almost mandala-like, dare I
say) and executed with expressionistic abandon, this work has
commandingly created a dichotomy of ideas through the use of
an exploding pregnant woman (a negative symbol) and the
presence of a candle (a positive symbol). If the Dalai Lama and
Jackson Pollock had a child that went to art school, this is what
he/she would paint for his/her thesis, a work both ethereal yet
political, contemporary yet ancient. A masterpiece destined to
ring through the ages.
I'm so thrilled to see that the Pro-life movement is finally funding

the arts. So... So glad.

Lee Mi Yeon in Queen Myeongseong
Sunday, March 11th, 2007
I’m not so sure if Lee Mi Yeon is known internationally. I don’t know if any of her dramas
or movies had been on Philippine air. Anyway, she is an A-lister in Korea. One of the
most respected actresses of her generation, definitely not a one-hit-wonder. The other
night, we (my husband and I) were reading an article about her. They said that she
started at 18 yet now that she’s in her 30’s, her beauty hasn’t faded and she has not
changed physically (read: no obvious evidence of plastic surgery). I so agree!
Lee Mi Yeon has acted in movies with several Hallyu stars like Jang Dong Gun
(Typhoon), Lee Byung Hun (Addicted AND Harmonium in My Memory) and Park Shin
Yang (Indian Summer). I like her most, though, in her drama “Queen Myeongseong”
(Myeongseong Hwanghu - read more about her in this wikipedia article) which was aired
a few years ago. Honestly, I didn’t see the whole drama. I just saw a couple of episodes
when it was replayed early last year on KBS. The drama also stars Moon Geun Young as
the young Myeongseong and Jung Junho (love him here!). It’s a historical drama about
the intelligent and strong-willed queen of Chosun who was assassinated prior to the
colonization of Korea by the Japanese. Here’s an MV of the drama. Watching the MV
alone is enough to get an idea of what the drama is all about. The song is titled “If I
Leave” sung by the famous Jo Su Mi. Of course, it’s not expected that the drama is
100% accurate. Like all other historical dramas, some scenarios were added for
commercial effect.
The musical play of “Queen Myeongseong” is one of the most successful theatre acts in
Korea. It has been reported that more than a million people have seen the play.
