Elese Swift P P T Womens Rights

 1. 1. Freedom for Women By Elese Swift
 2. 2. Women’s Life in Rome

A woman’s role in society was taking care of her family and household.

Women would marry in the mid-teens.

They were not allowed to sit at the table with men.

They would dine by themselves or with other women.

They would serve while their husbands and sons ate but would have to sit up straight and were not allowed to lie down.

Women were expected to do all household chores and take care of children.

If there were slaves, the woman or wife would have to oversee and make sure chores were taken care of.

 3. 3. Women’s Rights

Today, unlike in Ancient Rome, women are allowed to leave the house, vote, work, and have all the same rights men have.

Some women in Ancient Rome were allowed to own property, but this was usually only if they were very wealthy and if was left to them by a man.

 4. 4. Women’s Education

In Rome, education for women began around 200 B.C.

Some Romans had their daughters educated so they could be better wives to their husbands.

Basic education of reading and writing was available to wealthier girls.

Today, girls are educated exactly the same as boys in the same schools and classrooms. Women today have the same opportunity as men.

 5. 5. Roman Connections to Society Today

In modern times in America, women are allowed to vote and have all the same rights as men.

They are allowed to own property and work.

This may be because so much of our government is based off of Roman Law and Democracy.

 6. 7. More Connections

As Rome expanded, so did women’s rights.

Women could now:

own property

have political influence

Many women also played a role in family decision making and managing money.

Because of this move forward, women today are granted all these rights and others as well.

 7. 8. Women Today

Women today have political influence as well, thanks to the steps Romans took.

A woman is running for president today in our society and this would not be possible without Roman achievement.
