  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign InnovationNetworkMAY 2013
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Network• To create an eco-system for design innovation andeducation in the country the National Innovation Councilhas outlined three proposals:• Creation of Design Innovation Centres (DICs) under theaegis of MHRD as new models of design education• Creation of an Open Design School (ODS) to enhanceaccess to design education• Establishment of a National Design Innovation Network(NDIN) to connect design schools and professionals to arange of stakeholders
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and Innovations
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Centres The National Innovation Council has been developing aproposal under the aegis of the Ministry of HumanResource Development (MHRD) for setting up a networkof Design Innovation Centres as new models of designeducation, co-located in Institutes of NationalImportance Co-location in campuses of national repute like IITs/NITswill help leveraging of academic and industry resourcesand give a boost to design capacity in the country.
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Centres: KeyFeatures DICs will be specialised design research institutions DICs should be co-located in existing educational and researchinstitutions that do not currently have a design programme, therebyinfusing the principles of design thinking into academic institutions. The underlying mandate of each DIC would be to scout forinnovation opportunities in both economic and social domains, andto determine priorities for action in a structured but open process DICs may chose to have a regional focus (local crafts/local industry/environmental needs/skill development needs, etc.), and/or couldfocus on the host institution’s core function.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Design_thinking
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Centres: KeyFeatures DICs will be free to network and partner with other institutions, andwill not be limited in any way by their being co-located with the hostinstitution. In addition to sharing faculty with host institutions, their ownpermanent staff, DICs will have rotating faculty comprising ofworking professionals from varied educational and professionalbackgrounds, as well as international faculty through extensive tieswith leading design institutions across the world. DICs will promote collaborative learning between students of theDIC and of the host institution.
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Centres: KeyFeatures DICs will share physical and intellectual resources withthe host institution and other design schools, tofacilitate cross-disciplinary learning and research. DICs will have autonomy in designing course contentand delivery methods, in order to respond rapidly tochange, and to continuously improve methods. DICs will work closely with NDIN to take innovativestudent projects from successful prototypes to acommitted business venture
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsDesign Innovation Centres: Status In the 12thFive Year Plan the Ministry of HRD hasapproved 5 host institutions for the first five DesignInnovation Centres to be set up in the financial year2012-2013 These include: IIT- Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Guwahati, IISC-Bangalore, and the University of Delhi. Theimplementation plan is currently being discussed withMHRD and NInC has also suggested an AdvisoryCommittee for this purpose to be created under thepurview of the Ministry.
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsOpen Design School ODS is envisaged as a multi-disciplinary design school with aflexible curriculum, responsive pedagogic strategy, and rotatingfaculty from the best design institutions across the world. ODS will aim to share its design curriculum and other designlearning resources freely online, through an Open Course Ware(OCW) model, bringing access to design education to the entirecountry. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been sharing itslearning material through the OCW model since 2002. TheNational Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL )is an initiative funded by the Ministry of HRD, Government ofIndia, and is doing similar work. http://nptel.iitm.ac.in/
  • Adviser to the Prime Minister on Public Information Infrastructure and InnovationsNational Design Innovation Network NDIN is envisaged as a network that connects design schools andprofessionals to a wide range of stakeholders, includingacademic institutions, government, industry, social organisationsand the public, to work collaboratively to provide designsolutions for India. The ODS and NDIN proposals are still at a preliminary stage
