Gold Selling Guide

DISCLAIMER: If you’re an Arena.net employee looking out to get me, go fuck yourself because this
disclaimer claims I am full of shit and therefore you should not read anything I say. If you’re not out to
get me, I hope GW2 will be a great product. n_n For everyone else, feel free to reproduce and post on
other forums. I obviously am not responsible if you get banned; like if you were foolish enough to post it
on GWG forums.
This guide was written for Guild Wars, but the knowledge can be applied to any other MMO.
I’ve noticed that a lot more people are trying to get into the gold selling business, perhaps because the
new additions to the game has allowed them to get richer than they need, or because they realized
stashing virtual gold is worthless. So, I decided to write a guide. This is out of my generosity, as having
more gold sellers means more competition, but I don’t really view it as that. Gold selling in GW has
always been more of a hobby than income for me and I have plenty of other sources for money. I
started selling gold because I wanted to make money from the time spent in a game I didn’t like
anymore, but more importantly for the experience and fun.
As a measure of my knowledge, here are my estimated stats from selling gold (I stopped when I stopped
playing the game, and started again when I realized I had more gold to sell):
First Round: 6000 – 10000 CAD net profit (after PayPal transaction fees)
Second Round: 700 CAD a week, for 6 months so far.
Onto the guide. Here are the rules of the game:
1. PayPal is a piece of shit that doesn’t care if you get fucked.
PayPal is shit. But since everyone uses it, you will too. It is the “best” out of the shitty online options that
you can have. If you want to sell gold, you need to setup a PayPal account. Verify the details, go through
all the hoops. Because you are selling an intangible item, you are not covered under the PayPal Seller
Protection Policy. Therefore people can fuck you. How do you prevent this from happening? More on
that later. Remember, PayPal does not give a shit about you. You are one user out of the millions. You
are nothing. You might get lucky once in a while and get your money back by complaining through email
or phone, but most often than not if someone fucks you, you’re fucked.
2. Never keep more gold than you sell.
Kinda obvious, but like most obvious shit in life, people don’t always adhere to it. Once you become a
fully fledged gold seller, the virtual currency doesn’t matter anymore. Find or choose your gold selling
threshold (the amount of gold you can sell per defined time period), and never obtain more than that.
Excessive gold is fucking useless. That said, if you have an opportunity to obtain a shitload of gold, go for
it. Just make sure it’s worth it.
3. Offer incentives.
You are an independent gold seller. This means you will never beat the “big boys”, such as Swagvault
and shit like that. Why would people buy from you if they can buy from a respected, dependable
company like Swagvault? They won’t. That is why you offer an incentive, and when it comes to gold it’s
all about the value. So you either offer discounted prices, or in-game items. So in the case of Guild Wars,
you either offer discounted prices, or items of value such as extra Ectos and shit like that. Discounted
prices are the easiest to do. And in my experience, the most effective.
4. Find dependable buyers.
Either sell to friends, or people referred by friends. It’s fucking simple. If you go on a forum and be like
“HEY GUYSSS LOL DO U WAN 2 BUY GOLD”, prepare to get fucked. I only sell to friends, or acquaintances
of friends. I trust them enough for them not to fuck me over, and they are genuine enough not to fuck
me over. If you have to use forums, make sure the user is “reputable”. Most trading forums have a
system of values that determine how dependable the user is, such as iTrader or something like that. The
higher the reputation, the better. The thing is if you’re new to the forums, you don’t have any rep,
which makes it even harder for you to sell gold. So fuck forums. How do you find dependable buyers? At
the start, it’s hard. Because you have no rep, and your name isn’t out there. So what do you do? You
struggle and slowly build up a base of customers.
5. Gold sources.
There are many ways of obtaining gold. Here are the most “established”.
a) Other people.
You sell gold for other people. You take a cut of the sales. Never buy gold from other people, unless it is
for an insanely cheap price. Why? Because it means you are operating at a loss, unless you sell the gold.
Better to take a cut, which means you make profit WITH them.
If you plan to generate gold all by yourself, you need to know the market. Just like real life, you need to
know what you’re doing and manipulate the market. Know how to make money in the game. In Guild
Wars, farming by yourself doesn’t net you great profits. Buying low and selling high does. Or getting new
items (expansions/additional content etc, even though EOTN was the last) and selling them off while
6. Don’t get banned.
Understand the anti-gold selling mechanisms of the game as best you can. Ensure that you implement
measures not to get banned, but don’t go to the extremes. If you become fucking paranoid, you will
make it too hard for people to buy from you. Don’t make them jump through like 50 hoops.
7. Storing Gold.
This is tricky, and varies from each MMO. There are two “common” methods.
a) Multiple mule characters/accounts.
Characters or accounts with the sole purpose of storing currency or items.
b) Investing in an expensive and popular commodity.
In Guild Wars, these are ectos. Or diamonds, and rubies and shit like that, but they aren’t really
recognized as a universal method of trade. You have to be careful though, because ectos fluctuate in
price. When you choose to store in a commodity, its popularity and rarity affects the price. Therefore
you may gain or lose raw gold. In my experience, storing in raw gold is always the best. It is the most
8. Time is of the essence.
Set a date of the transaction, meet the date of the transaction. Don't ever wait unless you have to. In my
experience I have found the longer people wait, more often than not people change their mind, or they
no longer need the gold. Time is a factor that you cannot control, and time creates a lot of
uncontrollable shit. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad.
Example of good: Expansion is released, people want to play again, therefore a larger GW population.
People will also want the cool new items, therefore they will be looking to buy gold.
Example of bad: Zaishen Keys go up crazy in price, therefore people have a lot of gold. Therefore there
will be less buyers. But then, there will be more suppliers.
9. Remember this shit.
I don’t know why I put this, but I feel it is relevant. If you're failing school, getting shit grades because
you skip it to play games, and/or you’re generally fucking up life, and you think the only way you can
make money is to start selling gold online, don’t be fucking stupid. Education is important, perhaps not
because of the knowledge and experience you get, but because it gives you credentials. These
credentials get you a fucking job. This means stability and security. Selling gold isn’t a very secure and
stable business. Stop fucking up in life, this is only a game. I sell gold as an income source “on the side”.
I’m going off into a rant now, so you can skip this shit. I see so many fucking kids these days just fucking
up their lives to play games online. Sitting in a chair 9 hours a day in front of a glowing monitor, you
know the stereotype shit I’m talking about. You’re throwing away your fucking future for some e-rep in
a virtual fucking environment that doesn’t really matter. Your online reputation or achievements don’t
fucking matter outside the 19” of your LCD. Start living in the real world and stop fucking up. The effort
you put into games can generate a shitload more reward, if applied to real life. Then when you’re rich as
fuck, you can afford to sit and fuck around 9 hours a day.
