What is IMb?
Intelligent Mail is the technology platform for the next generation of mailing services, features and products. Mailers and the Postal Service™ will gain end-to-end visibility into the mailstream through the use of the suite of Intelligent Mail barcodes and by submitting electronic documentation, which will create actionable information about mail.
How will this help me?
Automated mail offers some of the largest discounts in all categories.
Ensures compliance with future plans
Enables an easier upgrade to Full-Service option
Less costly to implement than Full-Service

What you need to do for Outbound Mail
If you don’t want to pay the additional fee to track your mail delivery (Full Service), then you can continue to use our permit and there is nothing additional that needs to be done. If you want the ability to track your mail, you will have to purchase a new permit and obtain a Mailer ID with the new permit (Full Service).
What you need to do for Inbound Mail
Everyone MUST obtain a Mailer ID and new artwork for their return mail panel. This information can be obtained by each person contacting their Mail Piece Design Analyst at their local post offices.
What you need to do
Talk with your local BMEU or MDA to receive guidance on how to best meet your mailing needs with the Intelligent Mail options the Postal Service has provided.
Find your local BMEU (Business Mail Entry Unit)
Find your local MDA (Mail Piece Design Analyst)
Obtain a Mailer ID
2. Apply for a Mailer ID (MID), which you will use to identify your mail pieces and mail aggregates.
All Mailers requesting a Mailer ID (MID) must go to http://www.usps.com/ and select the Business Customer Gateway located on the bottom right hand corner of the web page. The mailer must logon as an existing user or register as a new user to gain access to the Business Customer Gateway. Once the mailer has access, they will select the "Mailer ID" link to obtain a MID.
When will this all Happen
The last date that the USPS posted for mandatory conversion was May, 2011. Recognizing ongoing concerns about mailers’ readiness for broader adoption of the Intelligent Mail barcode (IMb®), the USPS® has decided that automation discounts for mail with POSTNET barcodes will continue to be offered beyond May 2011.
