Communication Survey

Communication SurveyIn August and September 2012 the Tourism and Protected AreasSpecialist Group surveyed its members as we draft a communicationstrategy.As a volunteer group, we are only as strong as our membership. The bigquestion: how do we improve our communication?We want to improve our work in Knowledge Development, CapacityBuilding, and Communication and we want to ensure that we are givingmembers ample opportunities to engage and collaborate with oneanother.Survey responses were edited in a way not to show the individualresponder.

Your thoughts please ... how do we improve TAPAS communication?Use as many different media to communicate within the group, and between ourmembers and external interested parties as possible - and make everyone aware of theoptions.Capacity building would never be effective without practice. People need to cementknowledge acquired through reading with practical examples: training workshops,exchange visits and field trips.More online forums and vía skypeQuarterly conference calls with focused agendas; face to face meetings at eventscommon to the groupIt is assumed that we can all attend these international conferences, but the truth ofthe matter is that they are too expensive unless they are held literally on our doorstep.Survey responses are raw. Your thoughts please ... how do we improve TAPAS communication?More direct emails to let one know what is going on.The e-mails from TAPAS are difficult to read and you often do not know what link toclick on. It would be better if it has an e-news format.The e-mail list could be cleaner (too many forwards, messy signature lines)Inbox overload means I dont often read the emails... need to be able to scan subjectsand decide if relevant or not. Easier from Linkedin group pageMake into a LinkedIn Group. You can choose daily or weekly digest emails and youcan see peoples backgrounds and CVs and enable them to contact each otherdirectly.Set up its own webpage; set up a LinkedIn Group for TAPASSurvey responses are raw. Your thoughts please ... how do we improve TAPAS communication?Circulate monthly listing of projects on tourism and protected areas in whichmembers are participating. Interested persons can then directly contact the TAPASmember for more information.Its seems pretty elementary that in addition to the internal communication tools, weneed an external communications strategy - including linking with projects in thefield, the technical people implementing them and the donors supporting them.Perhaps a forum for info exchange, a jobs board (especially one that recruiters can usein tourism and conservation). Perhaps a way for them to blow their own horns -featured projects and that kind of thing.Conde Nast and Nat Geo are always giving awards for best this and that - maybetheres a story to tell about the network behind the scenes that facilitates success. Your thoughts please ... how do we improve TAPAS communication?E-bulletins of recent issues and developments in the world of tourism andconservation such as forthcoming meetings, conferences etc, minutes of workinggroups etc with web links to sites for more information as appropriate, funding calls,announcements of projects or other interesting projects of global or regionalimportance.Perhaps a short document highlighting the various forms of communication thatwould be useful on TAPAS, e.g. published papers relating to (list relevant topics),conference alerts, calls for papers, etc. I think it would be useful to be told whatinformation would be useful on TAPASIt is unclear how to access many of the links that come through the TAPAS digest. Your thoughts please ... how do we improve TAPAS communication?I had no idea that there was a TAPAS Facebook page or Google Group. AdditionallyI feel that sometimes the thread of a discussion is lost in the current email format.Perhaps the TAPAS group could look into setting up a forum where specific threadscould be followedI don’t know how to access the Google groups but would like to learn. I prefer havinginformation come straight into my email box that way I do not miss important items.I would like to get involved in more projects mainly in the area of marketingbiodiversity for tourism. I commenced a small project on tour operator excursionsand their impact on biodiversity (including negative aspects and positive such ascontribution towards biodiversity conservation).Quarterly conference calls with focused agendas; face to face meetings at eventscommon to the groupSurvey responses are raw.
