    • Sowetoo Soweto was the huge city for blacks outside Johannesburg.o More than half a million mostly poor blacks live there.o Their buidings were in a very bad condition.o The streets were filled with rubbish.
    • and then the police began shooting, there was nowarning. there were no orders to break up theprotestsThe violence spred from one end of the city tothe other, with fires in Soweto reachingAlexandra, a township in the northern outskirtsclose to some of the rich white suburbs.twenty five people died on the first day, Sowetobecame war zone.In the 1984, there were violent protests intownships in several cities. They marched andcarried signs saying "freedom before education“
    • The 12th September 1977, Steve Biko was killed at a policecheckpoint in Port Elizabeth due to shock .
    • the number of people arrested grew everyday. Across the country millions of blacksfought the police and soldiers. in 1961,Mandela had warned that the south Africangovernment " was sitting on top of a volcano“.
    • In June 1986 the British government warnedthat there would be a "bloodbath" ifapartheid did not end soon.The economy was suffering terribly. Thecountry´s currency, the rand, fell to its lowestever lever on the stock exchange.
