The history of Pondicherry dates back to Vedhic Period from the days of great sages like Agasthiya
Excavations in Arikanmedu, Pondicherry reveals the roman trade relationship and the major port during the roman era.
Pondicherry was part of the pallava, the chola and pandiya empires from 4th to 14th century, till it became the part of Vijayanagar empire.
In 1521, the Portugese were the first Europeans to trade with Pondicherry. Then the Dutch and Danes followed the suit.
The flourishing business attracted the French to have a settlement. It was French who developed a small fishing village into well planned port town.
