      • Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE), as apposed to FC over TCPIP over Ethernet, is a proposed mapping of Fiber Channel over selected Ethernet networks
      • This would allow Fiber Channel to leverage the Technology of 10 Gigabit Ethernet while preserving the main parts of the Fiber Channel protocol
      • Draft of the standard is expected in June 2008

    • 10. Thin Provisioning
      • Problem
        • Disk acquisition cost
        • Expanding and shrinking volumes
        • 40-60% allocated but unused space
      • Solution – Dynamic Capacity
        • Create any size volume
        • Allocate as usual, utilize on write
        • Keep unused disk space available
        • Constantly monitor storage usage
      • Benefits
        • Cut disk acquisition costs in half
        • Delay future purchases of disk
        • Never take system offline
        • Performance gains - only manage actual data (written blocks)

How De-Duplication Works: Compares latest backup data to stored data None, only pointers to previous data Source (with STKI modification) : Sepaton http://www.go-dpa.com/media/TSM_Webinar.ppt All Rights Reserved @STKI Moshav Bnei Zion, Israel +972 9 7907000 www.stki.info Current Data New Data Stored Previously Stored Data Eliminates duplicate data within Exchange, Oracle ® and Microsoft ® SQL databases Eliminates storage of unchanged portions of files Eliminates storage of duplicate files ( single Instance )
    • 12. Data Storage Reduction through Data De-duplication
      • Data De-duplication
        • Reduces storage media costs by reducing data redundancy
        • Trades off processing power (to detect, manage, re-create data) for storage space (multipleX)
        • On unstructured data, reductions as high as 90% have been observed
Active Production Data “ Hot” Backup Tape De-duplication Technology Can be deployed at any point Source: www. ccd .cornell.edu/SO%20 CCD %20 Presentation %2012130721.ppt All Rights Reserved @STKI Moshav Bnei Zion, Israel +972 9 7907000 www.stki.info
    • 13. Continuous data protection (CDP)
      • “ Any PIT” recovery
        • Some CDP flavors:
        • Replicate all writes (complete copy of Server)
        • Replicated only application related writes – for easier “bare metal restore”
      • Considerations
        • Introduces a new process into your backup strategy
        • Typically requires as much as 1.5x your current capacity

      • High End vs. Midrange Storage dilemma.
      • SATA drives might be too slow even for development
      • Even in High-end storage arrays wrong technical design (example not enough striping) might cause performance issues
      • MF Storage is much easier to manage (mature management tools)

      • DeDuplication in production storage ?!
      • Storage Replication SW has replicated system errors !
      • Heterogeneous Storage Virtualization might be very useful but users would love to have full certification
      • ISCSI technology is gaining momentum and used by many clients but still must be considered carefully

    • 19. Market Status and Trends : Email Archiving
      • Email archiving is main stream technology – the most common from the ILM concept
      • Main reason for email archiving project in Israel is “ operational ”. World wide the reason is “regulation”.
      • Email archiving solution might not be that easy for implementing
      • Email archiving pricing – 15$ to 25$ depending on functionality , size of deal and competition

      • Backup to disk deduplication is gaining a lot of interest but implementation is just starting
      • DeDuplication will be part of the Backup SW (Netbackup Puredisk, Legato Avamar)
      • “ Restore” option for the end user without storageservice desk teams
      • Clients with replicated storage and snapshots use tape backup only once week or even less

      • Example for Storage prices (complete system including SW+ warranty , large deals ) :
        • Storage for backup to disk – 2.5K$ and down to 1K$ per TB
        • Midrange Storage – (SATA and Fiber combined) 3K$ combined per TB
        • Highend Storage – 5- 6K$ per TB. MF Storage is more expensive
      • Large variety of prices – dependent on the deal size and competitive situation

    • 23.
      • Users should purchase Storage with HW and SW warranty (support , updates)
      • What is the recommended warranty period? Until we plan to shut down the machine - 4-5 years.
      • Users in Israel are able to get 20% (even 25%) discount per year from purchasing prices

    • 24. Storage Ratios
      • Number of TB (Raw) per Storage Staff Member (including backup and DRP of storage):
      • In Israel from 14TB per FTE (in small organization with 7TB) to 270TB per FTE in large Telco organization.
      • Median is 1 FTE for 50TB raw (including backupdrp).
      • Storage is the area where many clients complained they are understaffed – not able to control the allocations, proactive maintenance , new technologies
      • Want to have better ratios? allocate each application highend storage x4 of what was asked….
      • STKI predicts – IT failures caused by Storage
