Market Status and Trends – Linux Unix
Linux is main stream platform – example SAP production (application servers) - replacing Unix . Example for important Linux projects – Number Portability in Telcos
Cost of Linux environment does not seem to be that low… (support agreement is needed for none production servers…)
CentOS is gaining some attraction in Israel
Unix CPU performance improvement is bigger than demand – users consolidate many Unix machines
Some users has successfully discontinued their Unix environment

VMWARE is used mainly for Windows environment.
Users should carefully plan the storage performance needed in virtualized environment
Typical sizing for production application in VMWARE environment : 2 CPU (quad) with 16GB RAM for up to 12-20 production applications
For Linux guests backup users might use 3 rd party SW such as Ranger. Users are happy with VMWARE Windows backup – VCB
Oracle VM is based on Xen.
Both Oracle VM and Oracle Linux are excellent alternative from technology perspective, however sales of this service is just beginning

Server Ratios - Windows
Number of Windows Servers (logical ) per System member
In Israel from 35 per FTE in rather small but geographically distributed organization to 180 per FTE in large well managed organization. Median is 90 Windows Servers (logically) per FTE
Windows Server growth is huge
Many clients claimed they are understaffed – not able to perform the patches on time, capacity planning, consolidation project is too slow, keeping track of all changes, etc.
STKI observation – Virtualization has potential of savings but must start with adequate resources (staff).
Source: STKI All Rights Reserved @STKI Moshav Bnei Zion, Israel +972 9 7907000 www.stki.info
Server Ratios – MF Unix
Number of MIPS per MF System Administrator in Israel ( larger organizations) is about 1000 MIPS per FTE but there is a lot of variation – example –organization of 900 MIPS with 6 FTE
Number of Unix CPU per System member in Israel is from 5 CPU’s per FTE (rather small, geographically distributed organization) to 75 CPU’s per FTE in large homogeny Telco organization . Median is 50 CPU’s per FTE
Unix is rather stable declining . Only the understaffed organization (much above median) claim its too hard.
Good metric for Unix is hard to find:
Per CPU (but there are machines with many virtual OS on each CPU)
Per OS (but there are sometimes huge machines with 1 OS)

Implementation of SBC project should be done in stages . For example – find specific group, then eliminate “Drive C” , them work with several applications remotely and then full SBC
Some organizations are intersected in increasing their SBCThin Client project but internal politics (not technology…) is the barrier
Some particular applications are not suited for SBC (example – application with 300MB of cache in the client side ,or old VB application where the organization does not have the code … )

PC Support Ratios and TCO
PC First Level Support Ratios: Israel – from 150 users per Help Desk FTE (rather autonomic organization) to 700 users per Help Desk FTE in centralized (from image point of view) organization. Median is 350 users per Help Desk FTE
First Level success ratios are between 70% to 90% and even more
Success ratio of 90% does not necessarily indicate efficient support (many recurring incidents…)
PC Second Level support Ratios variation is very big since in some organizations the field technicians are part of new system implementation, some are responsible for HW (and some not…)

DBMS support ratios metrics are not trivial:
Per DBMS but sometimes there are several DBMS single application or one DBMS for several applications
Per application: but there are great variety of applications types and many copies of the DBMS
Applications DBMS vs. Infrastructure DBMS
Sometimes part of the job is done internally and some by the vendor
Infrastructure DBA Support Ratios (all copies of application, Open) : from 10 applications per DBA FTE to 30 applications per DBA FTE.

Gnu GPL by wikiIT
License for free software, written originally by Richard Stallman for the Gnu project, which has since become one of the popular licenses for free software.
The objective of the license is to protect … free character of the software is preserved.
In order to protect users' rights to the software, Gnu's GPL prevents others from denying users of the software these rights or to ask them to renounce them. Thus, if users want to distribute copies of the software, or if they change it, they are obligated to honor the freedom of others. For example, recipients of the software who distribute copies of it, at cost or for free, must pass on to recipient the same rights they received …

Old vs. New Concepts
Traditional EAI
Point to Point “ integration projects ”
Lack of A2P and P2P
No real reuse – each application with its own interfaces
Not necessarily open standards
EAI “give services to other applications” but not the “responsible”
Traditional Human Workflow (“old” BPM):
Emphasis on human to human interactions
Not Necessarily open standards
Lack of P2A and A2A
Tactical and not Strategic approach
All Rights Reserved @STKI Moshav Bnei Zion, Israel +972 9 7907000 www.stki.info
Old vs. New Concepts
New concept - SOA
Service based approach (interface is not designed for specific application)
EAI/ ESB for open standard integration, execution and Metadata environment
ESB gives services to the developers – security, transformation, logs, etc.
BPM as composite application enabler (A2A, P2A, X2X) including BAM, B2B, simulation and more
Portal as the general cross application GUIs

Benefits from SOA project (local clients) :
Integration with new application suites is much fasteretter.
Many of the interfaces exist already (as services)
Even more important the methodology of integration (technology, boundaries, testing, etc.) is clear.
Changes in production systems are done much faster than before
Day to day operations of IT is clearer and better (in perspective to integration)
Project has discontinue several legacy products

BSM by wikIT
BSM is the methodology needed to implement the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) within the organization. BSM provides a comprehensive solution that combines tools, processes, and structural integration based on ITIL best practices. It makes possible to turn ITIL from a theory into reality, thereby turning IT into a unit focused on business services capable of analyzing the effect on service and on business objectives of every malfunction, change, purchase, etc., and to manage and prioritize activities accordingly, taking into account the organization's business objectives.
Additionally, BSM manages all aspects of the life cycle of the IT environment by automating work processes defined in ITIL. It assists IT in improving the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of the service provided to the organization, and reduces operational risks resulting from failures.
BSM is a vital component in the realization of IT governance and provides a platform on which IT managers can implement business outputs at specified levels of service, and organization managers can measure and audit the IT in business terms. These and other capabilities are the basis of converting IT from a cost center into a value center.

ESM (Enterprise System Management) Ratios
ESM Ratios are very different from companies implementing ESM solutions since the level of implementation, internal processes , tools and automation is very different.
The KPI itself –” per Servers “– is not ideal as well since it doe not give indication to Routers, Storage devices, etc.
From 70 Servers monitored by 1 FTE to 360 Servers monitored by 1 FTE. .Median is 250 Servers
Data point in the STKI survey 1 FTE per 1000 server. STKI comment “close the project!”
