Market Status and Trends : Email Archiving

Email archiving is main stream technology – the most common from the ILM concept

Main reason for email archiving project in Israel is “ operational ”. World wide the reason is “regulation”.

Email archiving solution might not be that easy for implementing

Email archiving pricing – 15$ to 25$ depending on functionality , size of deal and competition

Backup to disk deduplication is gaining a lot of interest but implementation is just starting

DeDuplication will be part of the Backup SW (Netbackup Puredisk, Legato Avamar)

In Israel from 14TB per FTE (in small organization with 7TB) to 270TB per FTE in large Telco organization.

Median is 1 FTE for 50TB raw (including backupdrp).

Storage is the area where many clients complained they are understaffed – not able to control the allocations, proactive maintenance , new technologies

Virtualization for DRP is very important. The next stage will be Physical (production) to Virtual (DR).

In Israel from 35 per FTE in rather small but geographically distributed organization to 180 per FTE in large well managed organization. Median is 90 Windows Servers (logically) per FTE

Windows Server growth is huge

Many clients claimed they are understaffed – not able to perform the patches on time, capacity planning, consolidation project is too slow, keeping track of all changes, etc.

STKI observation – Virtualization has potential of savings but must start with adequate resources (staff).

Server Ratios – MF Unix

Number of MIPS per MF System Administrator in Israel ( larger organizations) is about 1000 MIPS per FTE but there is a lot of variation – example –organization of 900 MIPS with 6 FTE

Number of Unix CPU per System member in Israel is from 5 CPU’s per FTE (rather small, geographically distributed organization) to 75 CPU’s per FTE in large homogeny Telco organization . Median is 50 CPU’s per FTE

Unix is rather stable declining . Only the understaffed organization (much above median) claim its too hard.

Good metric for Unix is hard to find:

Per CPU (but there are machines with many virtual OS on each CPU)

Per OS (but there are sometimes huge machines with 1 OS)
