Do the teachers need repositories?

Why teachers use repositories?
1. Curiosity
What is it, what possibilities are there?
Is there something interesting, useful for me?
What colleges do, how they teach some
topics?

2. Need
To find good learning objects.
Repositories help young teachers and also those who want to break routine. To do and try something different.

3. Publish
If someone has developed some good material and wants to share it, then repository is a good place to show your works.

Why people don´t use repositories? 1. Poor computer skills We still have many teachers, who are afraid of computers and they avoid to use them.

2. Lack of knowledge
The teachers don´t know about repositories or don´t know which one is the best.

3. Quality problems
I have noticed that a lot of the works which are published in different repositories have been done during some computer training. Purpose then is more to try different possibilities of repository then to make a good LO.

4. Time-consuming
Looking for good material can take too much time. Sometimes it´s easier to make exercise by yourself than search for them.

How to make people to use repositories?
1. By educating
It is important to train the teachers and show them how to use repositories, demonstrate the different possibilities. Educational technologist at school could be the person who informs and trains the teachers. That person knows the teachers, their abilities and with right attitude can make a miracle in teachers training.

2. Virtual Communities of Practice
If the people of same profession would use same repository, it could be helpful in solving the repository selection problem.

3. By improving quality
Mentors should be more active in choosing the materials for their field. I really wish them more courage.

4. Metadata
Hopefully using metadata (kind of LO, informative title, grade etc) will make the search for materials faster than it is now. It´s boring to fill, but it is worth of wasting time.

5. Enough good material
If you once find an excellent piece or exercise you will probably go back.

6. “Cookies” for teachers
Most teachers need an impulse, a reason to publish their own work. E-educational materials design competitions financed by Tiger Leap Foundation are quite popular. They help to introduce new software and repositories, too

Do the teachers need repositories? YES They need them and repositories can make teachers life easy and happy.
