  • 3. The Reasons of the shortage
    • A 100 yr old pipeline system laid down by
    • the British which is now corroded and leaking.
    • Rampant Realty expansion.
    • Encroachment of existing lakes and water
    • bodies.

    • Illegal water mafia.
    • Non implementation of the Chitale report that was submitted 13 yrs ago.
    • The distribution channel from source to user is Extremely Long.
  • 5. An ignored area Mumbai has 129 recognized water bodies !!!!!!! ( 70 lakes – WWF, India ) SAVE OUR LAKES
  • 6. Solution…Save our Water Bodies
    • We need to Identify the Owners of the land where the lakes are present.
    • Create a ‘Water Plan’ – Water Harvesting /potential usage of the water source based on the requirement of its surrounding.
    • Cost of executing the Water Plan.

    • Attach an Industrial house to a Lake.
    • Phase wise completion Plan.
    • Handover the alive water body to the BMC for
    • distribution of water.
  • 8. Why North Mumbai as a Pilot Project?
    • Compared to any other Constituency in Mumbai, North-West Constituency holds maximum number (around 20) of Lakes & ponds.
    • Many of which are used for Lord Ganesh immersion during the Ganesh Festival.
    • Due to Negligence, debris & waste water, the condition of the lakes is degrading.
    • There is strong need for Restoration, Rehabilitation or Reclamation of these lakes & ponds.
  • 9. Current Status of Lakes in North Mumbai
    • Encroachment around the lakes.
    • Rapid increase in debris dumping in lakes.
    • The wastewater is increasing polluting the lake water.
    • Oxygen levels are decreasing day by day.
    • Health of the waterway, the health of the organisms living in and around the waterway, is considerably affected.
  • 10. Lake Restoration Benefits:
    • Carbon reduction
    • 100 % Water Supply at local level (a combination of rain water Harvesting and fresh ground water supply)
    • Extremely Short distribution channel
    • Alleviate oxygen depletion
    • Development as a recreational spot

    • Lake restoration through combine efforts of NGO and Corporate sector by municipal permission

    • Physical Controls :-
    • Mechanical manipulation of water and/or sediment
    • Chemical Controls :-
    • Precipitants and herbicide addition to control “limiting nutrients (P), suspended sediment, acidification or organisms (algae, invasive “weeds”, “trash” fish)
    • Biological Controls :-
    • Introduction or removal of organisms for controlling algal blooms, invasive weeds, or other aquatic nuisance species (exotic and invasive)
