A fun easy lesson that helps students understand the difference between restrictive and non-restrictive adjective clauses.
1. Warm –Up: Discuss with a Partner the three questions below.
1. Do you have a favorite superhero? What makes you admire that hero?
2. Why do people love superheroes so much?
3. If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?
Exercise 1: Watch the movie clip and match the characters with their descriptions by drawing lines from left to right.
Iron Man throws a huge hammer
The Hulk wears a red, white, and blue suit
Hawkeye changes from human to a green
Black Widow monster
Thor wants to take over the earth
Captain America likes to shoot arrows while falling
Director Fury has a suit of red and gold armor
Loki wears an eye patch
likes to use knives and guns
Exercise 2: Restrictive Adjective Clauses
Now create 8 sentences with your descriptions using adjective clauses and the
characters’ names as the objects:
Example: “The character who/that wears the black suit is Batman.”

Exercise 3: Non-Restrictive Adjective Clauses (Non-Essential)
Now use the same characters above and use them as the subjects of the sentences with
a non-restrictive adjective clause and your own main verb and object.
Example: “Batman, who wears a black suit, rides in the Batmobile.
