    • My name is Mrs. Hogan and I am a teacher here at Burroughs Molette.  One of the first times I came into contact with the American Girl Series, particularly the Addy Series was at the public library.  The school I went to did not have a media center, due to budget cuts.   My parents, especially my mother, decided to get me interested in reading.  They took me to the library and in browsing the books, the only thing that was interesting to me was the Addy book series because they were interesting and I wasn’t a strong reader at the time.  Picking up the books, I totally feel in love with them.  I read all the books there and I found a little mail in slip to get a catalog.  I snuck the slip into the mailbox and mail it off without my parents’ permission.    A couple of weeks later they sent me a catalog with the doll in it.  I was so excited that I went around the house telling my mom and dad that I want this Addy doll.  I did everything under God’s creation to get it.  I vacuumed and did dishes, anything I could do to get the Addy doll.  On Christmas morning I opened a box up and there she was.  It was my favorite thing.  My friends and family slowly bought me some of the books.  They were quite expensive at the time.  They only came in hardcover and were about twenty dollars.  For my family that was very expensive.  By the time I was eleven years old, I had all the books and I was an avid reader.  The Addy book series really pushed my read through.  By the time I graduated the eighth grade I had a 3.7 grade point average.  I attribute my love of reading with the Addy Girl series.  So when I saw the program going here at Burroughs Molette I was very excited because I knew that for me that the Addy series changed my whole academic outlook.

    • My name is Heaven James and I am going to give you a summary of how the Addy reading club works.  To be in the Addy reading club, first you have to sign your contract.  Then you go to the luncheon and meet the ladies from the sorority.  After you eat you will get an Addy necklace so that you can have a necklace like the one Addy had from her Great Grandmother.  Next you check out books and start taking AR test.  All test must be taken in the library so that Mrs. Ballard can keep track of your scores.  To go to the Addy banquet, you must read at least five books and pass five tests.  To win the grand prize you must read all six books and pass all tests.

    • The Addy book club is something that can be operated on a classroom level, school level, or even a district level.  In program is operated at the district level and each of the elementary schools in our district participates in the program.  In our case we have a sorority that has provided copies of sets of the books to each of our libraries.  As interest in the program has grown and more girls are interested in participating, there are not enough books to go around.  What we have decided to do at our school is to supplement the collection by purchasing sets of our own.  At $40 dollars per set, purchasing new copies can be a bit prohibitive.  So what we have do instead is go to yard sales, Goodwill, thrift stores, and especially to Ebay to put together our own sets of the books together for classroom use.

    • In fifth grade social studies, we cover United States history from 1860 to the present.  The social studies standards cover the cause, major events, and consequences of the Civil War.  We discuss different historical figures, different events, and issues of that time.  The Addy series brings out these different concepts, figures, events, and issues and portrays them through the eyes of a child.  That gives the children a deeper connection to the standards, which leads to a higher level of thinking and comprehension, not to mention the level of socialization that takes place among the students and the staff who are participating in the program.

    • I wanted to be in the Addy book program because I wanted to know what it was all about.  I also wanted a necklace because Addy was wearing one on the cover of the first book.  The Addy book club use to be the Addy Girl book club but not anymore.  Boys wanted to join because the girls told us it was interesting.

    • At the end of the Addy program, we have a special activity.  That activity is a banquet.  In order to be invited to the banquet, the students have to read at least five out of the six books and pass five out of six AR tests.  The menu from the banquet comes for book three Addy’s Surprise.  In that book Addy and her mother are going to church on Christmas Eve and afterwards they are going to have dinner with members of the congregation.  The menu from that dinner consisted of turkey, dressing, green, corn bread, and Addy’s mothers’ sweet potato pudding.  As you know the cost of the banquet can be quite costly, so what we have done is ask the parent involvement committee, PTA, and staff to contribute items on the menu.  Members of the PTA prepare the food and on the designated day students and staff get together to fellowship with one another.
