  2. 3. Goal of the McNair Scholars Program <ul><li>To increase the number of Ph.D.s among under-represented segments of our society </li></ul><ul><li>The Bloomfield College McNair program is designed to provide disadvantaged college students with effective preparation for doctoral study </li></ul>
  3. 4. <ul><li>Be currently enrolled at Bloomfield College </li></ul><ul><li>Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident </li></ul><ul><li>Be interested in attending graduate school </li></ul><ul><li>Have a minimum 3.00 cumulative GPA </li></ul><ul><li>Be economically disadvantaged and first-generation college student or a member of a group traditionally under-represented in graduate education </li></ul>Eligibility requirements for the McNair Scholars program
  4. 5. What services do we provide? <ul><li>Conducting research with a faculty mentor </li></ul><ul><li>Graduate school admission assistance </li></ul><ul><li>GRE preparation assistance </li></ul><ul><li>Information literacy (collaborating with the </li></ul><ul><li>Library) </li></ul>

What services do we provide? <ul><li>Tutoring (collaborating with CAD) </li></ul><ul><li>Expert assistance in seeking financial aid for GS </li></ul><ul><li>Up to $2800 in stipend to do conduct research </li></ul><ul><li>Assistance with travel and participation at </li></ul><ul><li>professional conferences </li></ul>
  6. 7. What services do we provide? <ul><li>Assistance with graduate school visits </li></ul><ul><li>Graduate school application fee waivers </li></ul><ul><li>Assistance with disseminating research </li></ul><ul><li>findings </li></ul>
  7. 8. What services do we provide? <ul><li>Assistance honing academic, library research </li></ul><ul><li>and presentation skills </li></ul><ul><li>Assistance to improve technical writing skills </li></ul><ul><li>Peer and faculty mentoring </li></ul><ul><li>Financial literacy workshops </li></ul>
  8. 9. Objectives of the Bloomfield College McNair Scholars program <ul><li>1. Research: 40% of McNair participants will complete research and scholarly activities that will directly impact their educational progression each McNair Program academic year. </li></ul><ul><li>2. Degree attainment: 87% of new participants served in each McNair Program academic year will attain a baccalaureate degree within three (3) years. </li></ul>
  9. 10. Objectives of the Bloomfield College McNair Scholars program <ul><li>3. Post Baccalaureate enrollment: 40% of bachelor’s degree recipients will enroll in a post baccalaureate program by the fall term of the academic year immediately following completion of that degree. </li></ul><ul><li>4. Doctoral attainment: 15% of McNair Program participants will attain a doctoral degree within ten (10) years of the attainment of the bachelor’s degree. </li></ul>

The 2009 - 2010 and 2010 - 2011 academic years <ul><li>What did we accomplish during 2009 – 2010? </li></ul><ul><li>- We served 25 students </li></ul><ul><li>- Male = 4 and Female = 21 </li></ul><ul><li>- Social sciences = 10; Humanities = 5; </li></ul><ul><li> STEM = 5; Business = 3; Education = 3; CAD = 1 </li></ul><ul><li>- 6 graduates/ 5 are currently enrolled in </li></ul><ul><li>graduate school (100% persistence to 2 nd yr ) </li></ul><ul><li>- all 6 graduates conducted UG research </li></ul>

The 2009 – 2010 and 2010-2011 academic years <ul><li>What did we accomplish in 2010 – 2011? </li></ul><ul><li>- We have served 22 students thus far </li></ul><ul><li>- 9 graduating seniors/5 have been accepted </li></ul><ul><li>to graduate school/3 have decided to </li></ul><ul><li>postpone graduate school for a year* </li></ul><ul><li>- NYU, Delaware, University of Alabama- </li></ul><ul><li>Birmingham, The New School, Rutgers, </li></ul><ul><li>Georgetown, and MSU </li></ul><ul><li>- All of our juniors have a secured summer </li></ul><ul><li>research appointment </li></ul>

Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year <ul><li>15 scholars presented their research at professional conferences across the U.S. </li></ul><ul><li>All seniors have conducted school visits </li></ul><ul><li>Scholars have been accepted to conduct summer research at MIT, PSU, Tufts, Rutgers, MSU, and Bloomfield College </li></ul><ul><li>Our Scholars have been recognized for their academic excellence by their departments* </li></ul>

Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year <ul><li>We have secured an external funding commitment from a Foundation </li></ul><ul><li>We met each of our objectives in our annual report to the Federal Government* </li></ul><ul><li>We have collaborated with other McNair Programs within NJ (i.e., Kean, Rider) </li></ul><ul><li>Continue to foster an excellent relationship with the LSAMP and SSS programs at BC </li></ul>

Noteworthy successes for 2010 – 2011 year <ul><li>We have conducted several real-time webinars for our Scholars* </li></ul><ul><li>We have engaged our alums to give back to the program </li></ul><ul><li>Our scholars have been featured in Diverse Education journal </li></ul><ul><li>Continue to foster an excellent relationship with Career Services </li></ul>

Challenges to the continued success of the McNair Scholars program <ul><li>Funding (3% cut in TRIO Programs)* </li></ul><ul><li>Students upholding their responsibilities to the program </li></ul><ul><li>Increasing the median score on the GRE </li></ul><ul><li>Provide services to students transitioning into graduate school </li></ul><ul><li>Increasing the number of undergraduate research opportunities for our scholars </li></ul>
