Why Do I Need A BPL Ecard? - Presentation Transcript

    1. Why do I need a Boston Public Library eCard?
      • BPL e Cards are virtual library cards that allow users immediate remote access to all of the Boston Public Library's electronic resources, including magazine databases, downloadable audio, video and music.
      • The BPL offers a wealth of resources that are not available through our local public libraries or library networks.
      What is an eCard??
    2.   A significant part of the BPL’s operating budget is provided through your state taxes. As a result…. “ Any individual who lives, works, attends school, or owns property in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is at least 13 years of age may register for an e Card. “ Who is eligible for an e Card?
      •
        • An e Card gives you immediate access to the following from your own computer:
      • Electronic Resources - magazine and journal articles from our 140 online databases
      • Access to SchoolRooms
      • Downloadable Audio, Video, and Music
What can I do with my e Card?
      • Want an eCard?
      • Follow these steps…
    3. Go to the Boston Public Library web page ( http:// www.bpl.org )
    4. Choose the link to “My Account”
    5. Choose the link to “Get a BPL eCard”
    6. Fill out the required information requested in the form. (You must use a valid Massachusetts home or work address.) Click on “I Accept”. (Remember to write down your PIN number!)
    7. You have now been issued a temporary BPL eCard number. It is good for 6 months. Record the eCard number and your PIN number for future reference. Remember that the hyphen is part of the number.
    8. Keep this number and your PIN number handy because you will be prompted for your e-card number at least once during each search session.
    9. Accessing BPL Electronic Resources with your eCard Select the drop down menu for Electronic Resources or an area of your choosing
    10. Search for the information you need from this screen. You will be asked for your eCard number when you actually conduct the search.
    11. Enter your Library Card Number Here…
    12. Remember:
      • The BPL e-card is a temporary card good only for 6 months
      • You may get a “permanent” card by going to any BPL facility
      • If you cannot get to Boston to get a permanent card, you may re-register for another e-card
