  3. 3. Vision of the society is “to create sustainable livelihoods in tribal areas of MP”.
  4. 4. Working in 9 Tribal districts of MP.
  5. 5. Covering 3000 villages
  6. 6. Working with 4.5 lack tribal families</li></ul>MPRLP<br />

The Area…<br />Gopal: Friend of your livestock<br />Narmda Catchment and valley area<br />High percentage of tribal population: Bhil, Bhilala, Barela, Baiga, Gond, Korku, Sahariya etc<br />Good forest cover in Eastern project area<br />Three mountain ranges: Vindhya, Satpura and Maikale <br />Most of the farmers are doing natural farming<br />Remote locations of villages<br />3<br />MPRLP<br />

Approach…<br />Work through Gram Sabha – the village institution as per PRI Act of MP.<br />Funds directly transferred to village account known as Gram Kosh – Village Fund<br />“Function, Functionaries and Finance” are with the Gram Sabha<br />Decisions are taken and executed by Gram Sabha<br />4<br />Gopal: Friend of your livestock<br />MPRLP<br />
  9. 9. Livestock and Livelihoods...<br /><ul><li>Livestock contributes major share in the livelihoods of tribal
  10. 10. To assess the situation Farming System Study (FSS) was carried out
  11. 11. Identify issues related to livestock based livelihood (Issues) (Potential Map)
  12. 12. Appointed Livestock Resource Organisations (role of LRO).
  13. 13. Integrated Livestock Resource Centre (ILDC)were established at a cluster of 10-15 villages

  15. 15. Achievements attained...<br /><ul><li>Government recognising Gopal for their services
  16. 16. Awareness on health care and management enhanced (clipping)
  17. 17. Mortality reduced
  18. 18. Return from livestock increased
  19. 19. Livestock keepers started paying for the services
  20. 20. Gopal accepted at village level.
  21. 21. e.g. 97 Gopal are working at village level and providing services to livestock keepers on payment basis.
  22. 22. Gopal were appointed by the project now appointed by Gram Sabha and managing them ( story of one Gopal)

  33. 33. How Gopal works…<br /><ul><li>Honorarium to Gopal max Rs.300/month/Gram Sabha
  34. 34. Gopal provides services to a cluster of 15 villages- min
  35. 35. Covers area within radius of 15 km from his/her headquarter to provide better services.
  36. 36. Regular follow up with minimum 10 households
  37. 37. Fix charges for various services to Gopal.
  38. 38. Gram Sabha approves service charges at village level
  39. 39. Has to attend Gram Sabha meeting
  40. 40. Has to visit each village at least twice in a month.

  42. 42. Key Challenges...<br /><ul><li>LRO support is not available for longer period
  43. 43. Gopal sustainability was not sure after project
  44. 44. Structure was reviewed and discussed in the light of sustainability
  45. 45. New model came out after discussion.
  46. 46. Model was discussed with Gopal
  47. 47. After their comments new model was tested in Barwani district
  48. 48. Test was successful and scaled up in other districts
  49. 49. Livestock keepers were not ready to pay for the services
  50. 50. Support services were not available
  51. 51. Livestock rearing was not properly done

  53. 53. Lessons learnt...<br /><ul><li>Systems approach is important
  54. 54. Before developing any model understanding about existing system and issues is necessary
  55. 55. Livestock keeper can pay for the services if they are explained with proper economic analysis for the services
  56. 56. Regular follow up is must
  57. 57. Awareness camp plays crucial role
  58. 58. Training at field level is important
  59. 59. Involvement of local Government Department is crucial
  60. 60. From the beginning payment system should be promoted
  61. 61. Nothing is free

  64. 64. Gopal model is effective if the person is from the same area
  65. 65. It should well linked with various support systems
  66. 66. Introduce the Gopal at various levels

  70. 70. Liaison with Government Department at local level
  71. 71. Animal production/marketing
  72. 72. Market analysis has to be done for various livestock and birds
  73. 73. Training and exposure on marketing bring difference
  74. 74. Control over losses due to poor management and health practices should be addressed
