The Romans

  1. 1. The Roman Army The Roman army was made up of groups of soldiers called the legions.There were over 5,000 soldiers in a legion. Each legion had its own number, name, badge and fortress. A legion had commanders, officers and ordinary soldiers. There were also doctors, engineers and other workers There were about 30legions around the Roman Empire, three of which were based in Britain at Caerleon, Chester and York. .
  2. 2. Roman SoldiersThe spread of the Roman Empire was partly due to the fact that the Roman army were so well organised. At the time of its invasion of Britain, the Roman army was the mostdisciplined and efficient killing machine that the ancient world had ever known. Its men werewell-equipped and highly trained, and operated in strict formation on the battlefield.
  3. 3. Gladiators Gladiators used to fight to the death –hence the reason why many of them were slaves.Thousands of men and women were killedin combat or by animals , to entertain the Romans
  4. 4. Roman BathsEvery town had its own bath complex (justlike a large swimming pool).There was 170 baths in Rome during thereign of Augustus and by 300 A.D thatnumber had increased to over 900 baths.
  5. 5. Roman ShieldsOn the left side of the soldier’s bodywas his shield which was used forprotection
  6. 6. SwordsSwords were very important to the Romans.The legionary wore his sword very high on the rightside of his body.
  7. 7. Why did the Romans invade Britain?The Romans invaded Britain and took over our country.The Romans had a very famous leader called Emperor Julius Caesar.The Romans built roads and buildings.
  8. 8. Roman LanguageLanguage we use today was developedby the Romans because they are basedon Latin words.
